Earlier, I told you that I really enjoyed makeup artist Robert Jones's new book, Looking Younger.
Chock full of application techniques and aha-moment tips, I thought I'd share some of my favorites right from the book. Oh, and lucky us, Robert even provided some quotes just for Bella readers (check out number two and three):
- Don't follow brow trends. Embrace the natural shape of your brow.
- "It is true, the sun is your enemy, but you can still enjoy it," Jones says. "Sunblock is a must — at least SPF 30."
- "Exfoliating at least three times a week will keep your skin constantly regenerating and looking its most youthful," Jones adds.
- If you are trying to decide between foundation shades, pick the darker one. Lighter shades can be aging.
- Use a bronzer every day. Going without it is like running around naked, Jones says. For a more natural look, he recommends choosing one that's just one to two shades darker than your skin tone.
To see the rest of Robert's advice, read more.
- If your lipstick changes color, apply an opposite shade to neutralize the unwanted tone. For instance, if your lipstick is turning too pink, apply an orangey color. If it's too orange, go for a pinkish shade.
- Since foundation is well, the foundation of your look, treat yourself to the best one you can afford.
- If you have combination skin that's both oily and dry, don't be afraid to use separate foundations — one for the oily parts and one for the dry parts.
- To avoid clumps, apply two thin coats of mascara to your lashes.
- Always prep your face for makeup with a generous application of eye cream. You can never overdo the eye cream, and your concealer will blend much better, reducing the appearance of lines.

I love these tips...they seem like quick simple things that can make all the different.
1I'm definitely going to have to try out 4, 5, and 10. :]
nice tips, i'm going to try the
2eye cream, because, my concealer
always creases.
My foundation is the only expensive makeup I own because it covers the most amount of skin and I wear it every single day so it needs to be good for me
3The one about foundation shades doesn't make sense for some of us. For some brands, I have to go with the lightest shade if I don't want to look like my face is a different color than than the rest of me. I also think blush is better for me than bronzer. #s 1, 2 and 3 are probably my favorite from all of them.
4#6 is so good for me! I have very pink lips so all of the lipsticks I try turn out way too pink!!
5I SO agree with the brow tip!!
6I am definitely going to try the eye cream one, too!
7love the tips!
8Thanks Bella! Will def have to practice on the #6!
9Mm, I'd rather go for the lighter tone because you can easily do some mild adjustments with bronzer.
10I don't agree with some of these. Like going with the darker foundation. I think it's better to go with the lighter. You can easily add darker powder or bronzer on top. Plus foundation darkens on a lot of people's skin due to oils. I also don't like the use a bronzer everyday rule. Bronzer's cool. I like it. But I also love embracing the pale and utilizing blush instead for a nice peaches and cream effect.
11Lot's of good tips, but couldn't disagree more with the darker foundation tip. I've put a lot of foundation on a lot of people over the years and one of the most aging mistakes is too dark foundation. Plus, from a distance, it looks like like you're wearing the wrong person's head. Wear the foundation that matches you and add your color products on top.
Bronzer in moderation is nice on most people, but if you're pale and oily (like me!), it just turns muddy and orange.
Remember the recent Covergirl ad with Drew Barrymore? As pretty as she is, they tried to make her look like someone she isn't with all that dark foundation and bronzer. She ended up looking like an unwashed tangerine.
12I'm not so sure about spending bucketloads on my foundation. I use CoverGirl which isn't the most expensive one out there but so far is the only one that hasn't left me with ghastly acne. I say use whatever works for your skin best, regardless of price.
13For a long time, I didn't agree w/ #5 about bronzer - but now I've learned how to apply it so it is very subtle and natural and I feel "blah" when I don't have it on. Also, I definitely agree with #10 about the eye creams - I have been obsessive lately about slathering it on in the am and pm. Finally, I would love to exfoliate but don't know which products to buy! Anyone have an affordable suggestion??
14I don't really agree with the foundation one either.
I'm an advocate of buying the right shade, or the lighter, but never the darker. If the shade of foundation I buy is a little lighter than my natural skin tone, I even it out with a little bronzer.
15Brandysbug- An awesome exfoliator is the DermaDoctor Physical Chemistry. It is a little pricey ($75) but you get a lot of it, and it lasts forever. It really is like going and getting a facial...and it suits all skin types (even sensitive because it is not abrasive at all). That, and I suggest Paulas Choice Salyaclic Acid Gel every night. It is a gradual, gentle exfoliator that does wonders for your skin.
I def. agree with the bronzer tip. A little bit goes a long way, but it really does brighten up your complexion. Nars Laguna is the best!!
16lovelie - thanks so much! I will have to check those out - my skin has been crazy lately...it needs to be tamed!
17Number 10 is so true. I have dry skin and discovered that on accident. A dab of face or eye cream really makes your concealor blend, last and melt into your skin. If you have oily skin you can always use a face powder afterwards.
Though I'm with you guys on number 4. I'm brown and going with a darker shade on my face would look so off. At least with the lighter shade I could blend it in.
18i'm only 21 i don't need the eye cream yet. could you please note what age the advice is for.
19Good tips!!
20I don't agree with bronzer, but I adore blush. I have tried so many bronzer high and LOW. All bronzers look so fake, too golden or orange and muddy on me. Actually Benefit hoola was the one that looked best but that's one unique bronzer. I have a cool skin tone and they don't really make bronzer that is not peachy, golden or too muddy.
21I have a problem finding the right bronzer also - I am very fair and don't really like the tanned look anyway. Benefit Dallas, a dusty rose shade, works well for lighter skin tones.
22thanks Robert Jones, because EVERYBODY has white skin and everybody needs bronzer *eyeroll*
23Thank you platicine, you took the words right out of my mouth. I have naturally bronzed skin, thanks... and darker foundation makes me look weird. These tips are kinda lame.
24I have 2 foundations, a darker on for nose and forehead, and a lighter one for chin, cheeks and jawline (if I need it). Plus I use the darker one more in summer, lighter more in winter.
I like Almay and Neutrogena anti-acne formulas. They do help.
Kudos to the eye cream.
25#5 Not a fan of bronzer. To me it just looks like people have dirty faces. Blush is better if your face needs perking up.
26These are great tips.
I am def. going to do the bronzer!!
Going to the mall tonight and ill pick some up!!
27yes about the brows!! some people look just plain 'ol weird.
28I love Robert Jones.
29dont over use the eye cream (#10) this later in life leads to fatty deposits under the eyes
