Are women wearing less perfume than they used to? That's the question pondered in an article in today's New York Times. There are nearly twice as many fragrances on the market today than there were six years ago, yet overall sales have dropped by $6 million in the past year alone.
So why are we buying less when we're faced with more options? There are a few reasons:
- Our relationships have become less intimate because of our busier lifestyles, making it more difficult for people to give a fragrance that fits.
- Some women cited instances where their mates disliked their fragrance, causing them to forgo wearing perfume altogether.
- Some public venues, offices, and events have banned perfume outright out of consideration for others.
Since it's Valentines Day, this has me wondering whether your sweetie likes it when you wear perfume. Do you think he would be able to pick one out that you would like?

he does. he always comments "mmmm...you smell nice." and i think he could pick out a nice fragrance for me. honestly, if he likes it i'll wear it.
1my boyfriend only likes certain perfumes - like mine, daisy by marc jacobs.
2i love it, but i really didnt wear perfume for awhile.
I think perfumes are getting ridiculous...who wants to pay $50 for a tiny bottle? No wonder people are buying less and less.
3My boyfriend likes the smell of my soap and lotion, so I'm set.
Most perfumes and colognes give me a rampaging headache anyway.
4Seriously, don't guys like women who smell good? I go weak in the knees for a guy that wears good cologne. It's so sexy...like an aphrodisiac.
5I don't wear much perfume, I actually have to remind myself to do it right now I'm trying to make it a habit. Usually its because my sister in law lives with me and she has a very sensitive nose, and while she was pregnant she absolutely hated everything I'd wear so I just sort of stopped. Besides I hate walking out of the house and taking a huge wave of perfume wherever I go, it makes me sick.
6Yeah, pregnant women can be very sensitive to smell. Could make them nauseous.
7He doesn't like powdery smells (if he can smell what I'm wearing at all), so I stay away from wearing those. I still buy the perfume if I like it. My guy surprised me by going ga-ga over Tom Ford's Black Orchid, which I thought he'd hate. I try not to let him buy it unless I get to try it.
8I still wear perfume almost every day, but I tend to gravitate toward warm, vanilla-y scented fragrances, like Pink Sugar...I don't think they bother people with allergies nearly as much as those strong floral ones.
KitKatherine, I am also obsessed with Daisy by Marc Jacobs. My hubby likes it too. It smells gorgeous.
9I wear perfume just about every day. I can't believe there are some who don't like it.
Funny thing....My hubby went to and picked out Daisy by Marc Jacobs for my Valentine's Day gift and I didn't even give him any hints. Lucky girl huh!! It smells so delicious.
10I wear perfume every day, even if I'm not doing anything. I find a lot of pleasure in doing little things like that just to make myself happy. I think my husband would be the only person on earth who could pick out a new perfume for me, I am incredibly picky.
11I don't like the way most smell, but my boyfriend absolutely hates perfume. Especially Daisy!
12I love perfume and I think that numbers are low because the perfume bottles are huge and it does take a lot to go through it all...they teach us to wear just a little anyway, so of course it'll take a long time to make our way through an entire bottle.
Also, I do think that some of the numbers are off because of body sprays and other scents that aren't technically perfume. It's cheaper to buy a scent package from Victoria's Secret or from the Body Shop....
In terms of a "healthier revolution" going away from chemicals, perhaps people are moving more towards essential oils and flower waters or going natural from something more organic.
13i barely ever wear perfume... the last time i did, i got an allergic reaction to it
14my best guy friend could definitely pick up a hot scent for me.
15i wear strange perfumes (like demeter's laundromat, tomato, or fireplace scent) or solid perfumes (i'm obessed with crazylibellule's ananas imperial). only once has my boyfriend ever said he hated a scent -- it was fresh's cucumber baie (which i still LOVE).
i definitely don't wear scents everyday, but i disagree with the nyt article that the future holds the "demise" of perfume. wearing perfume will always be a fun thing to do!
16I love wearing perfume...I have different perfumes for various moods and the scent of my favourites actually gives me a confidence boost.
HOWEVER.....Some ladies (and even men!!!!!!) need to be more considerate of other individuals. The overpowering of some perfume and cologne can be very painful to tolerate. For instance, especially being stuck on a long bus ride...sometimes when the scent is so overpowering, my eyes will start to water, my throat will swell and I cannot stop sneezing! Perfume/cologne in moderation can brighten one's mood and can be very sensual...but that is only in moderation haha.
17I actually find this very interesting because I never used to be a perfume gal, then I became a one bottle kind of gal and then over the last 2 years I have accumulated about 20 or so bottles on my vanity. I try to wear a different scent every day. For Valentines my boyfriend got me Bath and Body Works Japanese Cherry Blosom lotion, not a perfume, but still a scent I could absolutely just have sex with it's so amazing!
18i wear something everyday... i have this ann taylor spray for everyday at work. marc jacobs for an important day at work or an interview... i always wear gucci rush when i go out to bars with my friends because it stays on forever... armani black code is for when i go on dates... and for staying in on the weekends with the boyfriend ill wear any victoria's secret body spray... for some reason my ex boyfriend LOVED love spell...
actually, right now im wearing pheremones.. lol i got this oil at a sex toy party last year and its so pretty, smells like coconut
ahah im a perfume junky, along with all the matching lotions, im surprised im not single handedly keeping the perfume business alive
19A lot of scents are too strong for me and make me sneeze. I used to wear a lot of different scents including several Chanels, but my chemistry changed. I like smelling just clean and barely scented from soap and/or whatever I've put in my bath or like vanilla. I wore vanilla when we first started dating and smelling vanilla anything reminds him of me. Lucky for me because vanilla doesn't make me sneeze! I do have one scent I wear for going out that smells fresh and sexy and doesn't make me ACHOO!!!
20me and my bf like perfume, but when I work at a hopsital they usually don't like you to wear it...
21I have a few friends who rant about people who wear perfumes. They have allergies and get a terrible headache when anyone smokes or wears perfumes around them. I've also noticed more and more perfume free offices. That keeps me from wearing perfumes more often.
22i tend to wear the same 2 perfumes, one for winter and one for summer. i am allergic to a lot of them so once i found these two i really haven't switched (Burberry Brit for winter, Abercrombie 8 for summer in case you were wondering
) my ex-ex bf actually picked
out the Burberry Brit for me (with some help from my best friend!) so I have him to thank for that one I guess!! but yea so I don't contribute a lot to the perfume industry- i don't wear
enough that I have to buy more than two bottles a year- sometimes not even that!
legalbeagle- guys do love lovespell don't they! i have that too and that is what i splash on in the summer sometimes just for casual- like on the weekends or something.
23Some days I don't wear a fragrance but overall I do. My boyfriend loves the 4-5 different ones I swap around to.
24Well, my opinion is that the prices of fragrances are SOOO HIGH! My Jason wears a lot of designer clothes, I love his Versace shirts and jeans. He was the one to get me into liking Versace. I have 2 of their fragrances and absolutely love them. Some advice to everyone, I started collecting a lot of fragrances lately and the tip is this......most usually come in 1.7oz or 3.4oz. Well, if you check anywhere, department stores or Sephora, as expensive as fragrances are, if you know what it smells like on you and you really like it.......always buy the large size!!!! If you compare the 2 sizes, it is WAYYYY cheaper to pay more and get the larger size. Hee, hee, you all might prolly already know that, just a tip
25I LOVE perfume and actually was thinking about going to Sephora today on my lunch and picking up a new one. My boyfriend loves cologne a whole lot too and always smells amazing, so I have to do the same! I get compliments that I smell good all the time, too. I love it.
26"Some public venues, offices, and events have banned perfume outright out of consideration for others."
I've never heard of this before! How do they enforce something like that? What if it's your hair products or lotion that is scented? Or your laundry detergent? Seems odd to me...just wear the stuff in moderation.
I'm a Chanel Mademoiselle gal. I test a couple of fragrances every now and then looking for one I can rotate with the Chanel, but I end up just sticking with my standby. I'm so glad my fiance likes fragrance...his cologne smells soooo good.
27I am a perfume ADDICT! Which is not to say you can smell me from 10 ft away - you can wear perfume without it 'wearing' you! I can't imagine a day without at least some perfume, it would be like walking around without a bra on, I would feel undressed.
28As long as my husband isn't in the room while I spray he loves it, he just can't take the inital blast! People are very huggy where I live and after someone gives me a hug they always tell me how good I smell (and sometimes pull me back in for a bigger sniff, which is too funny!). I could talk perfume all day, so I'm gonna zip it now!
I wear perfume everyday
It might just be because eprfume is so freakin' expensive! It's not something you can just go out and buy...it's like a new pair of shoes or a pruse. And to be honest, I would buy those over purfume anyday
29I am a fragrance junkie, but I only keep a stash of my five or so favorites, and I typically ignore the bad, gimmicky fragrances that seem to be popping up on a daily basis. I agree that prices are ludicrous, and I would definitely buy and try more fragrances if I could buy a smaller size. The big bottles are only good, IMO, if you're buying your signature fragrance that you know you will use in entirety.
30My husband hates perfume, it gives him a headache. Normally in Europe I can wear it sometimes, but here in the US I think the air is just oversaturated with synthetic fragrances - everything just smells stronger, and I've become sensitive too.
So I decided to order some essential oils-based perfume "replicas", a friend gave me the web addy - can't wait to try it!
31I love perfume! especially this one brand that I've had forever, that I'm just addicted to. But only in small doses. With perfume, I've found that less is always more.
32I never wear perfume. I don't like most of them, so it's a hassle to go through so many to find something that doesnt hurt my head. My boyfriend is also super picky. He likes "Clean" smells.
33Does perfume go bad? I bought one like 2 years ago and it smells Totally different now. It's gross.
Perhaps there are just too many perfumes out there and the consumer is taking a break. Seriously do we need another celebrity or designer fragrance?
34Perfume used to be created like an art, and now it's all a commercial tooth ache of fruity florals... I'm on a never ending search for the right perfume.
35Forgot to mention that he does notice all of my perfumes, but he'd rather take me with him to choose perfume than get the wrong thing.
36i try to stick to the more classic fragrances.. burbery original and brit, and chanel chance (oh so good!).. for more casual times i have vicky's love spell and escada island paradise or something, very summery, reminds me of miami
boyfriend doesnt like to wear cologne himself, his mom's allergic so he grew up fragrance-free and hasnt gotten into it in the years since.. also hes in the army so..
37I love perfumes, but I try not to buy too many of them.
I didn't have electricity for weeks after Katrina hit and about a third of my perfumes spoiled. And since we are in an active hurricane period, I'm hesitant to invest a ton of money in something that might go bad.
Plus I have plenty of fragrances to wear as it is. LOL
I just think that people don't have the disposable income to spend on frivolous stuff like they used to. Yes the celebrity fragrances are a little out of control, but at the end of the day if it stinks nobody will buy it.
38hey bella, i actually worked in a perfume store for a year (last year in fact) and i can tell you that people are buying more perfume than ever but the thing is that the cost of perfume has dropped significantly. so even though people are buying more companies aren't making as much money simply because of the selling price.
celebrity fragrances in particular (most manufactured by elizabeth arden e.g. with love by hilary duff or the lancaster group e.g. j.lo's and sarah jessica parker's fragrances etc.) use synthetic ingredients as opposed to oils, which all the top fragrance houses such as chanel and annick goutal insist upon garnering the higher price tags. the synthetic ingredients are cheaper so naturally the fragrances are cheaper and also the synthetic ingredients aren't of the same standard as the oils i.e. they don't last as long, they smell better on dry skin than oily skin because natural oils and synthetics don't mix well and synthetic perfumes don't really develop like oil perfumes with their top, heart and base notes. synthetic fragrances smell the same at the beginning and end, they just fade away as opposed to "telling a story"
i just thought should be taken into consideration before we write off the perfume industry for good xx
39I wear perfume everyday, my signature scent is princess by vera wang. I think maybe perfume is a little expensive, I always buy mine at the airport to save.
40I think that perfume isn't going to go out so much as the way it's used will change - as people realize that 30 hour perfume isn't the way to go, they will switch to more natural, subtle materials.
41so which brand usually use synthetic oil and which use natural oil?
42I wear perfume everyday and I collect it as well. The husband doesn't understand that perfume is not only the sent, but the packaging as well. I probably wouldn't buy as much if the bottles weren't so pretty...lol. I don't have asignature scent, I just wear what I feel like that day, but more often that not, I choose fruity.
43I THINK WOMEN ARE JUST USING LESS THAN THEY USE TO... BECAUSE OF THE STUPIDLY HIGH PRICES OF PERFUMES.
