If you took my quiz on who owns what yesterday, you already know that L'Oreal and Lancôme have the same corporate owner. Even though each brand operates independently, my inner bargain hunter was wondering if the same products are merely being packaged and marketed differently. So I decided to compare my beloved Lancôme Bi-Facil makeup remover to the L'Oreal version.
At first, I was excited; both products come in blue-tinted bottles. "Ooh, maybe it's the same excellent stuff, just much cheaper," I thought. So I put on about three pounds of eye shadow on each eye, and then went to town taking it off. My results are below.
Lancôme |
L'Oreal |
And the winner is... | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $26/4.2 ounces | $5.99/4 ounces | L'Oreal costs 75% less than Lancome. |
| Packaging | The sleek, child-proof bottle looks elegant. A narrow hole dispenses only what you need. | Surprisingly sleek for a drugstore product, the bottle is nonetheless devoid of any fancy bells and whistles. Unfortunately, Junior will have no problem opening it and guzzling it down. | Lancôme's packaging is more user-friendly, if you care about this sort of thing. |
| The formula itself | Non-greasy texture, but feels smooth on eyelids. | The oil-free remover is similarly smooth, but Lancôme's version is slightly more so. | Lancôme, but just barely. |
| How well does it work? | Bi-Facil removed heavy eye shadow, eyeliner, and mascara with just swipe — no tugging required. | Removed shadow easily, but required a little more work to wipe away eyeliner and mascara. | Bi-Facil. It's quick and effective, whereas the L'Oreal version required more product. |
Both products are good makeup removers, but they certainly aren't twins. In this case, having the same parent company doesn't matter — they're different formulas. I'm sticking with Bi-Facil because of its effective and gentle formula, but L'Oreal's version isn't too shabby, either.

yeay thanks for this, very useful. more of these please!!
1Who knew? That's pretty cool!
I used to use the L'Oreal stuff but now I prefer the Essence of Beauty eye makeup remover. Two swipes and it gets off even my longest lasting makeup! Plus it's $5.
2I find Neutrogena Oil-Free Makeup Remover similar to my Bi-Facil.
3it's like i always say, you get what you pay for!
4hey bella: maybe you could compare L'Oreal Elvive Smooth Intense Serum and Kerastase Oleo Relax? both owned by the same company and very similar packaging too!
5It always cracks me up when people claim L'Oreal and Lancome products are exactly the same because they have the same parent company. As you've shown, anyone who has tried them both knows different!
6L'Oreal's makeup remover burned my eyes. Neutrogena is a better substitute.
7Good to know! I'm a little disappointed that they don't work the same. I agree with fudgeit, I have to know what the difference is in their Kerastase and their lower end products. I mean, no pressure.
8Great post Bella! I was wondering that myself this week! I can safely stick to the Lancome one and know it is the better product. It would have been nice if the Loreal was as good, I could have saved me $$ to spend on more makeup - lol.
9Verrrry interesting! Thank you.
10Please do post more like these.
I love my bi-facil and have tried the loreal one and was dissapointed. I have heard, though, that Lancome tests their prodcuts through Loreal first but I don't think that's true. Loreal is the parent company and also owns Kiehl's, by the way.
I just can't justify 26 for eye makeup remover. I've got to find something else soon. I've just been hoarding free samples of Bifacil but I'm about to run out.
11sjj158 - Sonia Kashuk's eye makeup remover at Target is the best substitute I've ever found for Bi-Facil. It's $10, so not cheapy cheap, but much less than $26!
12There is another makeup remover from Lancome - Effacil, I think it's called. I'd love for you to take the 'Pepsi Challenge' of that L'oreal eye mu reomver VS Effacil.
13Very interesting! I typically use soap and water and I need to start using something else because I've recently become interested in preserving my skin.
14I saw the Loreal version the other day and wondered the exact same thing.. Funny coincidence. lol I have a decent size small bottle of the Lancome, so I've been just using it on waterproof or really hard to get off makeup. It's like gold for me now.. love it.
15I love the side by side comparison! Do more, do more!!!
16i've always wondered about these two. i'm running low on my lancome and considered l'oreal, actually ! thanks for the comparison!!
17yep....
18i always trusted
lancome, it really
helps me with taking
care of my eye, specially
when you use contact lenses
like me...
Of course they are the same, Loreal is a HUGE cosmetics company that owns Maybelline, Lancome, Helena Rubinstein, Kiehl's, BioMedic, Vichy, Biotherm, Giorgio Armani Parfums, Ralph Lauren Parfums, Shu Uemura, Ombrelle, Redken, Matrix, Garnier, and La Roche Posay (www.loreal.com).
19Almay's Oil-Free eye makeup remover pads are what I usually use.. I'm glad to hear that Lancome has something that works with one swipe! I definitely have to try it!
20I love the comparisons you do of products. Keep up the good work!
21Intesting distinction.
22I hate both of these products. I can think of at least 5 that work better.
23I wear waterproof mascara every day, so the only makeup remover I have ever liked was Clinique Take the Day Off. I need oily to remove mascara without tugging, but it's got the other layer of stuff that cuts through the oil so my eye isn't greasy and blurry. Then I remembered baby oil. And put some witch hazel in there to cut through. Separates without any weird chemical reactions and works perfectly in a 5/3 oil/witch hazel ratio. Plus, it's going to save me about $100 this year!
24I find anything from Walmart works just fine for me.
25Wow, this is useful!
26Please do more like this.
Thank you Bella!
I used to use L'Oreal but found that the Target brand knockoff works just as well and is less expensive. I transfer the product to a small travel-size flip-top bottle so it won't spill out should I knock the bottle over.
27i prefer neutrogena too
28Oh helpful! I've just started wearing makeup and I have to scrub it off with my normal face wash. It's good to know that Target has something just as good but cheaper because I love Target!
29I used to use the L'Oreal one, but have since moved on to the Body Shop's chamomile version... I think it's a good deal more effective than the L'Oreal, but it could use improvement, so I might try out the Bi-Facile!
30love this post-please do more x
31Love your comparison chart! Great idea!!
32Love your comparison chart! Great idea!!
33I'm not sure how improved the Lancome eye make up remover is now, but I had one many years ago and didn't like it because it was too oily. It left this residue that made instant reapplication of make up difficult. I now use a great one by Body Works. It has camomile in it, a great price, and a decent size. Try it. =)
34I've personally used both within the last year, and Lancome's is definitely better. L'Oreal's just did not remove my make up as well at all. It's definitely worth spending more money on the better stuff.
35Thanks so much for doing this! you should def. do more.
36i like these comparisons! some skincare comparisons would be nice too - especially all those brands that p&g owns!
37I really like Lancôme Bi-Facil makeup remover, but it's so much more expensive so I usually buy L'Oreal makeup remover..or I use Neutrogena face wash which works really well too.
38ALL OF LOREAL'S STUFF IS A LOAD OF CRAP, THEY LIE ENDLESSLY IN THEIR ADVERTISING AND WHAT THEIR PRODCUTS ARE SPOSE TO DO. I CANT BELIEVE PEOPLE BOTHER BUYING THEIR BULLSH!T.
39BellaSugar - I really like this comparison! I wonder if the results would be the same if it was a BLIND "taste test"?
Have you ever seen that Canadian show Shopping Bags?
http://www.wnetwork.com/tv_shows/shows/The_Shopping_Bags/
They always test a few products and then report on the best one. here is an example of the mascara tests: http://www.wnetwork.com/tv_shows/shows/The_Shopping_Bags/ViewProduct.asp...
