A few years ago I was en route to my new boyfriend's house for a dinner date when I noticed that my red nail polish was beginning to chip. I knew that it would soon become an unsightly disaster, so I decided to avoid any future embarrassment by purchasing some nail polish remover before my arrival. I'm not sure why I had to be so dramatic about the whole thing, but I stopped in to use the bathroom at a restaurant around the corner to clean things up.

Unfortunately, what I uncovered was far worse than chipped nails. A week earlier, I had been on a tropical vacation, and apparently the mixture of sun, SPF and polish had turned my nail beds an unnatural shade of yellow. My nails were the jaundiced shade of a longtime smoker's teeth, and all night long I did my best to keep them hidden. It took about a month for the color to return to normal, so I only wish that I had done something to prevent this whole mess when I was on vacation.
Lesson learned: Be sure to use a good base coat when wearing red nail polish, and always protect your nails when you are going to have excessive exposure in the sun. Try a product like Orly Sunscreen For Nails which is a topcoat that contains SPF, or if it's too late and you need to reverse the damage, Yello-Out Clear Acrylic Top Coat ($7) should do the trick.

i have a question: i wear a lot of dark colored polish myself and my nails have turned yellow like in the picture. I have purchased the yellow out, should i just wear it without nail polish, or is it okay to wear it as a base coat? For how long? Someobody help me out here!
1Thanks
I've had that happen to my toenails. Never thought about the SPF thing - knowledge for the future!
2aahhh good to know!! thanks
3I never knew about the spf thing either! i'll have to get that for this summer.
4Wow you poor thing!
5I use a ridge-filler as a base coat, put on the color, and top it off with a 4 dollar UV blocker from the local Sally Beauty Supply. I haven't had yellow nails in years.
6I find that dark nail polish usually does this to my nails too...I hate it. I try to remember to always use a base coat.
7i dint know
8about this polish
such a great
idea, specially
for my toenails, i
love polish on my
toes in summer...
I NEVER use polish without a base coat first. I don't want yellow nails.
9I used to have this problem too but I've switched to doing gel nails instead. It's a layer of gel that's applied to your nails and then cured with UV light. You can just do clear, or clear with a layer of colour gel on top. It really protects and strengthens my nails and my manicure can last for about a week at least.
10Alot of time it is the color of the polish that is turning your nail's yellow. All the red shades I wear tend to have a yellow undertone... so it bleeds.
For a very quick fix... get a bowl (like a cereal size)fill half way with warm water and about a tablespoon of plain ole liquid bleach. Swish your whole hand of fingers in the mixture. For maybe 30 seconds - 60 seconds. It will turn them back to white. Then be sure to really wash your hands with a good soap. Then apply lotion.
11this is great
12Wow, I didn't know that you needed SPF for your nails too. Guess I should look into it!
