Women can be tempted to do some painful and dangerous things in order to shave seconds off their beauty prep time. Even though the promised results of some of these procedures can be tempting, sometimes they are just not worth the risk.
I see how eyelash perming could sound enticing: You'd have perfectly flipped-up lashes 24-hours a day, no eyelash curler required. The way it works is that your lashes are treated with a special glue, and then wrapped around a mini sponge-y roller. While holding your eyes tightly shut, the perming solution is applied to the upturned lash, and then it is left to set for about five minutes. The result is that "wide-awake" look, which lasts for two to three months.
But before you get too excited, read more.
- The lash perming solution has not been approved by the FDA.
- Eyes are extremely sensitive organs, and they react differently than other parts of your body to certain chemicals. Even if the chemicals do not come in direct contact with the eye (which they absolutely should not during this process), they can still cause severe reactions, particularly if you wear contact lenses. These reactions can include anything from mild irritation to a full-blown allergic reaction, even blindness.
- While the normal eyelash has a lifespan of about five months, perming chemicals can be damaging to the lash, making them fall out even sooner.
If you do choose to give it a try, make sure that the person performing the procedure has completed a training course and has the certificate to show for it, as such courses are available through most cosmetology institutions. Have any of you tried this procedure? If so, what did you think?

Haven't tried it. Think I'll stick with mascara and the occasional use of the eyelash curler.
Any idea what the price range is for it?
1This is so silly...
2I've tried it...and it didn't work. (I had it done about two or three years ago)
3I'll just stick to my eyelash curler!
4I'm good with the eyelash curler!!!
5No thanks
6I don't even bother with an eyelash curler, so I will definitely be steering clear of this.
7eyelash perming? is the idea to think of who can sell the most stupid and useless service?
8Yikes! I wouldn't do it. I'll stick with my lash curler, it does just fine.
9THATS NUTS.
10REDONK!
But then again, my eyelashes curl up naturally...if only they were longer.
11I really wanted to try this since my lashes NEVER stay curled...serious. I have tried everything, the blow dryer, special mascaras, fancy curlers etc. Nothing seems to work.
I didn't end up doing it because the girl that I would have gone to said it would take like an hour or so and I just never had the time. Then I stopped going to her and haven't found anyone to do it that I trust.
12i've never even heard of this before! i wouldn't get this done
13I've been tempted to do that before, but my eyesight is slightly more important to me than the prospect of having curled lashes for months at a time.
Anyway, if I'm going to put my eyesight at risk for vanity, I think I'd rather go with eyelash extensions.
14I had this done on me when I was workign in a spa. They were training in it, and I was the guinea pig. However, I didn't know until after they started doing it what they were doing to me! I have very sensitive skin, and I was fine with it, and I got good results. However, I wouldn't do it again, because I'm too worried about things going wrong. Curlers work fine for me without the added risks!
15As someone with sadly impotent eyelashes, this sounds tempting -- but I don't trust it yet. I don't know anyone who has tried it either, which makes me even more hesitant. Maybe if they perfect the process down the road I'll consider it, but as of now it's too scary.
16HAVE ANY OF YOU COLORED OR PERMED YOUR HAIR? WELL YOU ARE AT THE SAME RISKS DOING THAT AS PERMIN YOUR EYE LASHES. rEAD YOUR ATR HOME COLOR WARNINGS. THEY SAY THIS PRODUCT MAY CAUSE IRRITATION, HAIR LOSS AND IN RARE CASES BLINDESS. AND A LOT OF AT HOME COLOR PRODUCTS DO NOT HAVE FDA APPROVAL.
17AS FOR THE PERM ITSELF, YES NEVER GO TO SOMEONE THAT HAS NOT HAD TRAINING IN THIS FIELD. AS WITH ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD DO TO YOUR BODY.
THE PERM SOLUTION IN THESE PRODUCTS IS GEL. IT STAYS IN THE PLACE YOU PUT IT SO THE POTETIAL HARM IS GREATLY REDUCED.
NOW PERSONALLY I HAVE PERMED MY LASHES A FEW TIMES AND I AM ALWAYS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE RESULTS. YES THE LASHESDO FAL OUT SOONER BUT THAT IS NO DIFFRENT THAN ANY CHEMICAL PROCESS THAT YOU WOULD HAVE PREFORMED.
SO MY ADVICE TO ALL OF YOU IS FIND SOMEONE WHO IS TRAINED TO DO SUCH A PROCEDURE AND TRY IT. AN FOR THOSE O US HO ARE TRAINED WE ARE LICENCED BY THE STATE AS EITHER A COSMO OR AN ESTI. THEN WE GO THROUGH 50 HOURS JUST TO LEARN THIS PROCEDURE. WHICH HONESTLY IS A LOT MORE TIME TAHN WE SPEND LEARNING HOW TO DO A PERM ON YOUR HEAD.
Gibbon--
I wouldn't say it's the same risk at all. It may be the same type and strength of solution, but when you perm or color your hair, the solution isn't applied directly to your eye area the way it has to be when you do the same thing to your eyelashes.
18WHOA ON THE CAPS.
I never realized that I should aspire to have curly lashes.
19It just sounds risky and unnecessary.
20I don't know about this but I do get my eyelashes tinted once a month. I'm a redhead so my lashes are red also, which makes them barely visible, and I have very sensitive eyes, so I don't like to wear tons of mascara everyday. I have been getting my eyelashes tinted for about 3 years now. If the tint gets in my eye it does burn for a minute, but it usually doesn't get in my eye and it looks great. I believe it is also not FDA approved though.

22i've friends who've done and it looked pretty
23actually, ive done it many times and no problems, the chemical they use on the lashes are actually way milder than the one on your hair so. and for the someone who asked for price it can range from 15-20 where i go. it doesnt take long at all.
24I would pay for a quick fix to curling lashes and keeping them that way, but I wouldn't risk my eye sight for it.
25I was actually thinking about doing it last weekend!!! It's not too expensive, price range is from $39-$50 .....however, who knows if it works or not, my friend did it....and it sucked! so... i won't do it for now..
26I had mines done a little while ago. it ran me somewhere in the $40 range. it didnt turn out the way i liked it. one of my eyes looked good, the other one didnt. it looked too curly, but the soft one I liked, didnt last long enough. I'd just stick to using mascara and a curler, or for a softer look, mascara and a hair dryer =]
27I didn't know you could tint eyelashes, interesting! Eyelash curler and hair dryer works great for me and it lasts all day.
28I was thinking about doing this since I don't like wearing makeup, but I love the wide awake look that lots of mascara and a good eyelash curler gives you. Most places administer a 24-hour patch test before they'll perm you since some people do have reactions to the chemicals. I'm still undecided about whether I'll try it.
29Call me crazy but I don't think I want anything like perm solution ANYWHERE near my eyes! One slip and you're blind for life. Is that really worth having curly lashes? Not for me...
30I was blessed with great lashes, so this is a DEFINITE no for me. Sounds dangerous.
31THANKS GIBBON!
I don't know if I'd trust someone to do it but I dislike curling my eyelashes, and they look way better when I do, so I like the concept.
32Ick. Sometimes I'm too lazy to curl my eyelashes, so I just don't. I've only recently started wearing makeup so I don't mind going without. I've done it for years and I can do it for years more. I already have problems with my eyes-- I am terribly nearsighted-- I would never do anything that could be so risky. And even if it's 100% safe and tested, I wouldn't spend money on that.
33maybelline makes a GREAT curling mascara. its the purple one
34I m a great fan of eyelash perming..
35Been doing it for more than a yr now and i only hv to perm it every 3mths or so..but u nd to take good care of ur lashes, so i usually use a eyelash collagen to keep my lashes in tip top condition..
be caution though: make sure u get a good and reputatable therapist to do it.
I agree you have to get a professional to do it. I got it done and i didn't get any irritations or anything. Except the lady put on actual clippers to bring your eyelashes out to their fullest potential, not the spiral rollers. They are heated clips and she used permanent mascara before putting on the clips and then when I was done she put on another coat of permanent mascara. Afterwards, she just said don't let water get on the lashes for 4 hours. I paid 40 for it and it does last for 3-4 months. I recommend it to girls that can't get their eyelashes to curl at ALL. I'm the prime candidate for it, and it worked so well for me, because I've tried every mascara imaginable, the "heated eye lash curler" and none of those worked for me, but this did!
36i WANT to try this!! i think ill wait tho, until i hear its safer, etc. also, my lashes are currently short...so id like them to be longer and look like falsies if i get them done
i watched a youtube video (nbc?) about this and they said they use a milder/diluted perm solution on your lashes, so it is "safer." AND (i thot this was cool), you can get your lashes tinted at the same time!!! so for busy people, or someone going on vacay to a tropical (read humid) place, this would be ideal.
i so want this!! but i just had lasik so my vision is more important right now. cost $5000 - and SO WORTH IT!!
37I perm my eyelashes and love it. My lashes are straight so it is nice to have them looking like doll lashes for a couple of months. I pay 35.00 every 8 weeks, the last couple I have to use a curler. Never had any problems during or after the procedure takes about 1/2 hour.
38The last couple of weeks I have to use a curler to help with fullness.
39Adding this to my prior comment
I first heard about eyelash perming about 22 years ago, read about the risks and decided to stick with the eyelash curler. Fast forward to about 3 or 4 years ago: Nothing - and I mean Nothing - stops them from being completely stick straight. I'm 41 and I don't know what has changed but I even invested in a heated curler from Japan and that didn't keep the curl for more than 2 minutes. I never thought I'd be trying the perm thing, but I did and Loved, Loved, Loved it. It took years off of me - absolutely unbelievable. So I went for the third time today (same salon)and it didn't work. Am very disappointed. Does anyone know if things like fatigue or hormones can affect result?
40My friends talked me into getting this done when I was in Mexico City and I hated the entire 40 minute perming and dyeing ordeal and swore I would never do it again. That said, I am now OBSESSED with how good they look. I'm blonde with long lashes that were very fair. I wake up every morning with dark curly lashes and they look AMAZING. You never have to wear mascara, which is great for people who are rubbing their eyes all the time (moi) and it's one less thing to worry about. Stings like hell and you have to make sure they don't drip perm solution on your lower lashes or they'll kink but TOTALLY worth it.
41I have long straight eyelashes and its blonde and not curl. I just got eyelashes perm and tint last month, its so beautiful, voluminouse curl.I have fabulous lashes after 70minutes. It's wonderful and safe.
42I had my eyelashes permed and loved it! My eyelashes are not only stick straight and impossible to curl with anything else, they actually grow downward, not out. Some, even bend down instead of up!! Please don't judge as silly until you have issues like mine to deal with. It is expensive in my area and am looking for a kit I can do at home myself. It is a big time saver when putting on make up.
43I have had my eyelashes permed and tinted many times – it is fabulous and worth every penny!! I too thought it was bizarre when I first heard of it and steered clear of this beauty process until I saw a girlfriends results. It leaves your eyelashes perfectly fanned upwards in a nice rounded swoop – unlike an eyelash curler which actually bends/crimps your eyelashes rather than “curling” them. My reason for exploring this new beauty fad: I am blonde with light blonde eyelashes that leave me looking like I am 10 years old without mascara. I’m also a contact lens wearer and mascara constantly irritates my lenses. BUT NOW I have them permed and tinted black. I wake up to perfectly curled black lashes and always look as though I have eye makeup on. Just out of the shower or during a day at the beach – I no longer stress about running mascara. My daily routine now consists of foundation and a sweep of bronzer then I am out the door. Again, I really think it is worth every penny!
44i got my tinted in asia, and it works great! i had no negative reactions and it only cost the equivalent of $10. it does take an hour but i think it's well worth it.
45Just got back from Thailand and got my eyelashes permed at the mall. It cost $9 and they came out perfect...no complaints, no allergic reaction. Not saying everyone should run out and get it due to differences in tolerance to products and such, but for me -a girl who previously had stick straight, but full lashes- I'm so glad I had it done. It took around 45 minutes from start to finish.
46I had this procedure done just recently and the results were amazing. It was not painful, nothing got into my eyes, it cost 30 dollars, and I was very happy with the end results. I mean come on there are people out there who are willing to get pieces of their skin removed to get thinner,I don't think getting your lashes curled is anything to panic over.
