"No clumps!" the green packaging for the new Maybelline Define-A-Lash Waterproof Lengthening Mascara shouted at me. Zero, zip, zilch, nada? That's a tall order as far as I'm concerned. I was skeptical, but intrigued enough by the grandiose claim to drop $7.50 and give it a shot.
The mascara comes in a sleek, futuristic green tube, and the wand is slightly curved. The wand has widely spaced, short bristles (which are supposedly what prevents the clumping) but it looks like something that couldn't possibly deposit a thick coat of color onto my lashes. But looks can be deceiving, and the reality is that it's ergonomically designed for each bristle to snuggle in between each of your lashes, resulting in a thorough and mostly nonclumpy application of color. The thinness of the wand also allowed me to reach the inner-corner lashes without poking myself in the eye.

To really test out this no-clumps claim, I loaded my lashes with three coats. By the end, there were a few lashes sticking together, and maybe a few teensy clumps, but nothing compared to what I usually get with multiple coats of other mascaras. The trick is to go slowly and wiggle the brush to keep lashes separated. The best part was that I experienced no smudging or flaking at any point throughout the day. Keep in mind, if you have particularly sparse lashes, this is not the mascara for you because it doesn't do much to pump up the volume. But for those of you who want extra definition and a bit of length, I would suggest giving this one a shot. It's not online many places, but you can pick it up at Ulta.
Here's what it looks like on. The left is the eye with the mascara, on the right is my naked eye:

And here you can see on the left, my defined lashes! Have any of you tried this product? Let me know what you thought of it!

No discussion needed, just get it! LOL
1this isnt another sponsored post is it?
2I'm going to be skeptical every time i see a positive product review on this site
I use the non-waterproof version of this mascara and love it. It is fairly subtle -- just enough in my opinion. It's not like one of those mascaras that plumps lashes 1000% or whatever. It really doesn't clump.
3I used Define-A-Lash like a year ago, the regular formula, and it was okay for a while, but nothing exciting. I've moved on several times since then!
4I'm with bailaoragaditana, I used this a year ago or so ago when it came out. I liked it, but it was nothing special.
5I love Define-A-Lash with these new wands/bristles works like a charm.
6No drug-store brand mascara is better than Cover Girl Lash Blast. It's awesome. Better than Benefit Badgal Lash and DiorShow in my opinion.
7I tried it too, but it's not my true blue one. I am still searching for the perfect mascara!
8I'm using this right now and it works great!
9Hey, ur_momm, no worries, this post was in no way sponsored by Maybelline, I picked this guy up myself at Walgreens! Anything that is sponsored on the site (like the giveaways), you will be able to identify by the "sponsored by" button at the top of the post.
We review everything honestly here on Bella, it's our goal to never lead you astray!
10I have been looking for a good daytime mascara, so I'll probably give this one a try. I love Benefit's BadGal Lash for evening, but it's too much for the day. Thanks for the tip!
11I love diorshow unlimited but I might give this a try as a backup
12Hmmmm... I might have to give this one a try!
13Looks great!
14I Looove It !!
15I haven't tried this but Wow, your eyes are red Bella! Visine maybe?
16i hate this mascara, the flexible wand makes it so hard to control!!
17I like this mascara, I have it in the regular formula and if I curl my lashes before hand, it defines them nicely and gives a bit of length like you said. I like it for daytime since it's clean and pretty.
18Bella, thanks for clairifity that for me, I was wondering the same thing.
This mascara sounds good, maybe I'll pick it up on saturday at Target
19nice.
20Ah, the one and only mascara I've actually bought two times in a row! I have humongously long lashes, and every single mascare turns them into a matted, clotting mess. I like this one.
21It looks very natural. Thanks for the review, Bella.
22I tried Define-a-Lash last year and I thought it was pretty decent. I liked the brush.
23i tried this and it did nothing to my lashes.
24I had the same experience as bailaoragaditana, I tried the regular version and no fireworks. It wasnt bad, but the wand was way TOO flexible and hard to control, and then after a couple of weeks it completely broke off when I stuck it back in. I won't be buying again.
25Wow I love the colour of your eyes
26I've used this before and had mixed results. It does not provide a thick coat, at all,so be ready to apply more. The flexible wand also makes it easier to create smudges on the lashline (not a huge deal for those who wear black eye liner, but still).
27i use the cover girl version in the red tube... same idea, plastic bristles and i think it works really well for a natural look! i always had an issue keeping my eyelashes curled for more than an hour (damn those straight asian lashes!) but i purchased the shu uemura curler and plastic-bristled mascara based on a recommendation from a friend over christmas and that combination works wonders! i've tried switching up the mascara to see whether it's the mascara or the curler, and after using sephora brand and clinique brand mascaras, the results don't even compare!
28The before/after pic was an Excellent idea! You could do it with every product you test.
29yeah it definitely works. i use lancome voluminous and then when i want my lashes extra dramatic i use the define a lash on top and voila. i want to try the define a lash with volume next.
30i swear by flirt! (available at kohl's) thickening mascara...it's about $13 but is well worth the price. i'm a lash girl so i've tried A LOT of different brands, formulas and am EXCITED by this product
31i'm not too fond of the flexible rubber brush mascaras
32Never tried the waterproof, but I LOVE Define-A-Lash, the regular one. My Mum, the pickiest person when it comes to mascara, loves it too.
33i liked it
34i love the mascara & i love the green tube =D
35I tried this too, I guess I liked it, but not enough to buy again. I agree with your review. Right now I love L'oreal Telescopic mascara. I Have CG Lashblast also, but it's not as good.
36It is what i use right now, and i love it! But I only need lengthening, and less volume so it works for me
37Honestly, I havent personally used define a lash, but I've seen reviews and pictures of it. The bristles of the brush look really short, and in my experience that equals the brush clumping a ton of mascara at the base of the lashes and not combing it through.
38my personal favorite is maybelline full n soft, the brush always has the right amount of mascara on it and combs it through perfectly. and it still looks the same at the end of the day!
Bella, sorry i ever doubted you... i bought this yesterday and it was amazing!!!!! i couldnt believe how long it made my lashes look.
39Unfortunately, here in canada it was 11$ + tax... not 7.50. but i still think it was awesome!
I thought this brush was annoyingly flexible for application. Maybe it's just me...
40My absolute fave mascara of all time. I have used the original one up until today, and always said that if they bring out a waterproof version that it will be the only mascara I buy for the rest of my life. Guess I've got a promise to keep
41Grrrrreat mascara! I bought this after reading your review and find myself using it daily. I still HEART Lancome Definicils but I can't always justify spending so much money on mascara. Thanks for the review Bella, you ROCK!
