Last week I was lucky enough to interview the talented Ivan Cerquiera of London's swanky Real Hair salon. Ivan works on some of the most renowned international heads, and while I'd love to reveal who they are, he takes his clients' requests for privacy quite seriously.
Ivan did, however, share some insight with me on a few products, tricks and tips to make fine hair seem fuller, thicker and bouncier. I happen to have pretty fine hair and I've found these little adjustments in my styling routine extremely helpful. I hope you will too.
- Shampoo: Using a shampoo that doesn't contain lanolin will help to keep hair light and full of life. Lanolin is a common ingredient in most shampoos, but it tends to be too heavy for fine hair. Ivan loves Philip Kingsley Body Building Shampoo.
- Blow-Drying: When you are drying your hair, don't use the nozzle that comes with your hairdryer. This tool is excellent for coarse and thick hair, but it concentrates the heat too much for fine hair and causes irreparable damage that can be easily avoided.
For additional technique and product suggestions for fine hair, read more.
- Technique: Use tension when blow-drying. This will reduce frizz at a faster and more efficient pace. It also cuts down the amount of time you'll need to use heat. Additionally, if you use a medium-boar bristle brush, you can create extra body in your hair.
- Products: Use a generous amount of volumizer at the roots. A new product that I really like is Kerastase Resistance Volumactive Expansion Spray Blow Drying Treatment For Fine and Delicate Hair because it gives extra lift and sustains the hold, it's not heavy, and it smells good.

I have thick, but fine, hair so I love tips like these. Thanks!
1Interesting! I have pretty fine hair (a lot of it though) and I try everythign out there to make it look volumpious and lively!
2I have baby-fine hair, so thanks for these tips!
3great tips - but what sort of attachment should I use on my hair? All it said was what not to use.
4Great tips. I'm a hairstylist and people always ask what they can do for fine hair. Now I have a few more tips. Luckily I have pretty thick hair.
5These are fab tips, thanks. I have fine but curly hair so can be a nightmare. The Kerastase spray is great- I love all their products.
You're right about lanolin, is not a nice ingredient at all - so many people are allergic to it as well, and it's in most hand and body creams too.
6Thanks!
7Any product other than Kérastase than someone else recommends?
8I'll recommend this to my sister, she has fine hair. Mine is rather thick.
9I have been using the nozzle attachment on my hair dryer. I guess I shouldn't be!
10I have a LOT of fine hair and in the humidity here in Florida it just drives me crazy. Lately it has been trying to wave a little, which I hate. I have to use so much junk to keep it straight and tame! I never did use the nozzle attachment so thats ok. I will have to check for lanolin in my shampoo though.
11Yes, would love to know what kind of nozzle you recommend!
12This might be a dumb question, but what exactly do you mean by tension?
13Emo, I was wondering the SAME thing.
14emo and ckeller, tension is when you blow dry with a brush and pull the section you're drying tightly away from your head, which makes your hair go straight out from the root...
15Great post Bella!
16Most people want straight hair when they blow dry, but for those who want to keep their natural wave or curl:
17Try using a diffuser attachment for your hair dryer; it keeps the heat from concentrating too much in one space, thus making your hair frizzy.
Also, instead of using a hair brush for tension, which would ruin the curl, just run your hand through your hair at the root and gently tug. That way you can dry your roots quickly, which keeps the frizz their down, but leave your ends alone, since that part of your hair should dry naturally so it doesn't dry out.
Remember to work in some kind of mousse or leave-in-conditioner before you dry, too, if you're going to use that kind of product.
