One of the challenges in reviewing celebrity perfumes is that it's difficult to ignore your opinion of the famous person behind the juice. Would Lovely Sarah Jessica Parker have been such a runaway hit if, say, Bea Arthur were behind it? (I would so buy a Bea Arthur scent, for the record.) Or would a well-done perfume like Britney Spears' Curious be considered more sophisticated if it weren't connected to a pop singer?
Which brings us to Paris Hilton and her fourth fragrance, Can Can. I normally wouldn't pick up a perfume by Paris; after all, I need my $55 more than she needs it, and I can't imagine telling people that I'm wearing Paris Hilton. But I wondered if my opinion of Paris was clouding my judgment. So to get an honest and fair opinion of Can Can, I set up a blind smell test by inviting other Sugar girls to smell the scent — without knowing its identity. Would they like Paris' perfume if they didn't know who was behind it? To find out, read more.
Yesterday afternoon, I sat in a small room and invited everybody to come in for a sniff. I didn't tell anybody what they were smelling until after they'd shared their opinions, and I remained stoic and neutral. Here's what they had to say:
- CitizenSugar liked it; actually, she was the only one of the group who said she'd definitely wear it. "Is this Aquolina Pink Sugar?" she asked.
- TeamSugar said it was "overwhelmingly sweet, like smelling cotton candy. It's not a classy or sophisticated fragrance."
- GiggleSugar said it was too sweet for her. "I do like it, but I wouldn't wear it," she explained. "It's a very sexy fragrance — like sophisticated cotton candy."
- LilSugar said she "kind of liked it," and would wear it if the scent faded a bit.
- YumSugar said it was too feminine and girly for her own tastes, but that it was a fine scent. "It smells like sugar — like cotton candy," she said. "I'm not that sweet, but I could see some people in Sugar HQ wearing this."
- GeekSugar wasn't a fan. "Maybe it's because I have Skittles in my mouth," she said. "But it's too sweet and candy-ish. It's not awful, but I wouldn't wear it."
So, there you have it. Incidentally, after discovering the perfume's identity, everybody felt that Can Can captured the essence of Paris Hilton. I agree with them; it's fun and flirty, but it's not cloying or juvenile. Ultimately, though, there isn't much substance to the sweetness.

i didnt like the smell of it, and im known for sporting the cotton candy spray. i like "curious" by britney, even though i have been embarassed to admit to ppl who's perfume i was wearing. but, my ex bf bought it for me, i didn't pay money for it, so its all good
1I've smelled this and I wasn't too keen on it. It was too sweet for me, like most of the others agreed above.
2I do own her first fragrance though, I got it for a present for Christmas. I wasn't too thrilled when I opened the box and saw it was Paris Hilton perfume, but I tried it on and I actually liked it a lot. It's one of my fiance's favorites, actually.
Clever idea to do a blind scent test. I definitely think my judgement of a celeb fragrance is clouded by my opinion of the name behind it so I'd be interested to try this experiment myself.
ps. lol at the 'I need my $55 more than she needs it' comment!
3I actually wear the Britney Spears cotton candy fragrance. I can't remember it's name. I had a client that always smelled so goodand I finally asked her what it was, and she blused when she told me. It's sweet and smells nice on me. I have a lot of perfumes that I switch up though. I also have her In Control and like it alot
4Ha! Love the blind test. That would be the only way I could ever admit liking something "by" Paris. Interesting results.
5I LOVE Paris, but I dont like any celebrity perfumes. They never make it for me
6I haven't smelled this one... but I have her first one. I think it smells soooooo good! It's a great scent for summer! I also really love Curious and Fantasy by Britney Spears. Actually, Curious is one of my favorites of all time!
7It should be called cotten candy not Can Can.
8I think I smelled this once and it was very sweet...I don't remember loving it. But even if I DID like it, I would never pay $$ for anything made by this woman or with her name on it. Absolutely can't stand her.
9I like sweet smells, but generally not cotton-candy sweet. But I wouldn't pay any amount of money to support Paris Hilton.
10MY JUDGEMENT OF THE CELEB DOESN'T USUALLY KEEP ME FROM BUYING THERE FRAGRANCE, AS LONG AS I LIKE IT! I LOVED HER FIRST SCENT!
11that's a pretty neat way to nonjudgmentally judge a perfume
12Do this more often! I like having the different opinions!
13I love curious, I'm on my 3rd bottle of it! I usually get tired of my scents before I get to the end of the bottle, but it's my favorite...and of course I'd rather tell people I was wearing Chanel, but they're always surprised when they find out it's a Brit-Scent. Can-Can is the best of all of Paris' perfumes. Just Me was horrible, it smelled like nothing...but then again, maybe that was the point.
14Hmmm, I've have to check it out. I used to love Aquolina Pink Sugar but I think I'm too old for it now.
15hmmm... I've only just started experimenting with perfumes. I usually don't like them, but I like the idea of smelling like cotton candy -- anyone know a GOOD cotton candy perfume?
16I LOVE Paris' first fragrance, and generally everyone loves it on me, I used to be a big fan of Curious, but it really is hard for me to wear it when B is having so much trouble. The blind test is a great idea, but since we all know these girls aren't actually developing the scent why not give it a try if it works with your body chemistry you only look ultra savvy for smelling so good!
17Anything with Paris' name on it is not for me.
18Hard to say. Britney Spears is a dimwitted paparazzi magnet who's
19almost as phychotic as yours truly, but Fantasy is really good.
i went to a mall event where if you bought can can the day it was released, you got to meet paris there in the fragrance department a few hours later. i happened to be in the first 300, so i bought a bottle (mostly just to meet her, my signature scent is givency very irresistible). i actually like can can. it's not THAT sweet, but does have a sweet smell to it. it's very feminine.
20Really clever idea. I haven't smelled it yet, but I kinda want to just to see what it's like.
21i like the smell of can can, but honestly wouldnt want to know if thirty somethings or fourty somethings are wearing this...i think its targetted to the younger group since it has a very sweet cotton candy smell.
22calgon has a line of sweet smelling body mists that smell very similarly. my fave is marshmallow..i recommend it to people who like candy scented scents
