After discovering my first glass nail file, I've been hooked. Unlike emery boards, glass nail files never go dull; they need only a quick rinse under the tap to be good as new. My Sephora file is a grid of teeny, tiny upraised rough glass nodules. Think frosted glass, but maybe a tad rougher. The file is thin, but sturdy enough for me to feel confident that it won't break when my klutzy self inevitably drops it on the floor.
You use it just like any other nail file, but it feels significantly less abrasive. There is no pulling or snagging on the nail tip, which prevents cracking, peeling, and splitting of the nails. In fact, it is so gentle that you can use it safely on acrylics or on damaged or fragile nails. The only drawback? Using it reminds some people of nails on the chalkboard. But if you're interested in checking out a glass file, it's a relatively inexpensive investment. A company called 95° and Sunny makes hand-painted ones — or you can always start out with my $8 special from Sephora.

I have a Revlon glass file I picked up at Target. Like you said, the glass files feel less abrasive and damaging than traditional files.
1Wow! I have actually never heard of a glass nail file! I'm so glad I know now because I always get annoyed when my regular ones get dull after just a couple of uses. I can't wait to try one of these out
Thanks Bella!
2I've never tried a glass file! I'm going to be on the lookout for one now.
3This is only kind of file I've ever really used...
Got it from Target too, Revlon. It's nice!
4I have one of these. And they are cute.
5I have had one for a year or two now, I love it. I have found that as long as you use short light strokes, that it doesn't rasp. It's only when you're trying to do long, fast ones, that it is so bad!
I always think of it like tempered glass. Whatever the case, it works, and works great.
6Wow, I never would have thought about a glass nail file... I hate how fast normal ones wear down, so I'll definitely be acquiring one of these!
7I picked one of these up at a craft fair about four years ago just because I thought the hand painting was so cute! I was so pleasantly surprised to discover how much better glass files were in addition to being better looking.
8Bella - I just picked up a set from 95 and Sunny, thanks for the link! I actually got a pretty good deal - about $10 (including shipping) for a 3.5', a 5.5' and a 7.5' file. Woo!
9I thought I was the only one!
10I love crystal nail files! I read about them in a magazine a few years ago and haven't used anything else since!
11I bought one but can't use it. It gives me the creeps. It's like someone scraping their nails down a chalk board. I gave it away.
12Cool and the site you sent w/the pretty ones is neat, they aren't really that $$. I don't use files as much anymore because I have acrylics, but sometimes I do need one.
13I really want one of these - they sound so much better than the normal files!
