It can be hard to let go of a beauty product that's not completely used up without feeling like you're dumping dollars down the drain. Unfortunately, most products can't be used forever, and then there are some that are just duds. So what do you do with the products you no longer need or want?

If its a bad color on my or something I chuck it. But if it's something good I never use, I will hold on to it 'just in case'.
In my makeup bag under the sink...never to be used again...
i sell them
If it's not my color or something then I usually give it to a family member. I've done that with face washes I don't like too.
But otherwise, I tend to hold on to things too long!
I give my makeup to my daughter and she uses them to "make up" her dolls.
I give them to my cousins if the color doesn't suit me or I just haven't used it in awhile
I'll hold onto it for a while to see if i can make it work (e.g. mix a bad lipstick with a good one). If not, I'll give it to my sister.
That's a cute idea, to give them to your daughter to use.
I toss mine if I know it's a lost cause, lol.
Offer it to my sister.
swap it on makeupalley.com
Almost all of my makeup is Clinique, so I feel guilty when I throw it out. I try to buy a cheaper version of something I want initially, so if I like the way the color looks I go and buy the more expensive version.
If it's not quiet my color or texture, I see if any of my friends want them. We're all pretty diverse, so what one doesn't like is bound to work on someone else.
I just can't throw them away like that. It would be unfair. I usually give them to my sister who doesn't usually spend a lot on make-up and skin stuff. I like to think that she likes that!
i like to bring a box into the office full of stuff that didn't work for me and put it in a common area with a sign that says "free to good home." if it didn't work for me, that doesn't mean it won't work for someone else, and most people (like me) are always down to try some free stuff. in most cases i've only used it once or twice. i call it sharing the beauty love.
I run a community theatre, so a lot of my unfinished makeup gets donated there (after being sanatized, of course).
My best friend and I will often swap stuff if one of us is sick of something or the colors aren't right for us. It might not be the most hygienic thing to do but I feel less wasteful that way.
If I don't want it, I usually just toss it.
It depends on how much I paid for it. If its a drug store item, I usually trash it. If its a department store item, I'll keep it until I finally give it away.
Even if i KNOW I'll never use them again, I can't bring myself to throw them away! I'm the same way with expensive clothing and shoes!
I went through my makeup drawer last week and threw away a ton of things that I didn't like or samples that I won't ever use.
If something is just the wrong color for me I'll give it to my mom or my friends.
If I don't like the color or it's expired, I just toss it out.
I do that with pretty much everything.
I should have clicked on "other" as I have no problem tossing out expired mascaras, but everything else I use until the bitter end!
I only buy cheap makeup so I have no problem throwing it away and replacing it with brand new cheap stuff!
I have a hard time tossing it even if i haven't used it for a while! I dk why...maybe i should go home tonight and clean my makeup bag!
IF its a product thats in good condition i usually will give it to my friends or sister in law or mom or aunts LOL...but if its mascara or something thats old i will usually chuck it to make room for new cosmetics thats fun part is buying new makeup
I tend to keep things hanging around far too long.
I work in theater, so I always rationalize that maybe I'll need something. Usually it doesn't pan out, but recently I got to use a really horrendous teal shadow and an overly frosted pinky-lilac lipstick.
Sometimes too they help me out in a pinch. A lipstick that was freaky looking on the lips frequently doubles as emergency blush. Or a too brown bronzer ends up as eye shadow.
But for the most part, they sit around gathering dust.
I go through my bag periodically and just toss stuff. I have to check out makeupalley.com though. Thanks for the tip, laomy!
I used to give things that were just a wrong color to a younger friend of mine who was in high school and just learning about makeup. It gave her a lot of fun things to experiment with and I didn't feel like they were just going in the trash. Most things though end up in the cabinet under the sink and then when I do a spring cleaning, they end up in the garbage. I can still hear my Mom yelling at me that I'm wasting money though!
I toss things that can't be be reused and/or are expired (i.e. mascara and foundation) and give away the items that friends and family members want.
I have a hard time letting go... and I don't really have anyone to swap with. My mom is not that experimental with makeup either, so I don't give it to her. Last time I gave some things to a friend's teenage daughter, I think she had fun with it. I would never give stuff that's old and yucky to someone though. Just throw it out!
alsoooo, in another make-up bag, under my bathroom sink.
make up i dont use. i maybe go thru the bag once in a while.. might use it again... never knw if i might need it again..
I swap on makeupalley.com and give away to cousins and friends. Mascara and other bacteria prone prodcuts go in the trash.
if it's something new, but the color isn't quite right I give my friends.
I swap on Makeup Alley! Unless it's old or mascara or lipgloss.
ebay takes care of this for me.
Hate throwing slightly used products up. I agree mascara is very disposable. Otherwise, I try to use the rule, if I haven't used it in 12 months, it's time to part ways.
I've held onto things for a long time, and I'm really trying to break myself of the habit. This year, I've been on a no-buy for makeup, and am using up or throwing away what I already have, with the goal being that when I do start buying again, I'll buy less impulsively and use what I do buy instead of being enticed by the latest promise or look.
If I end up not liking it, I still can't just "throw it away" if I haven't used it too many times. More often than not, it just sits there until mold starts growing. However, if the makeup has expired or is rotting, I don't mind throwing it away...
If it's a color that just doesn't work for me I send it to my fair-skinned cousin. She just loves the stuff I give her! I'm happy that someone will accept my goodies. When I used to give it to my sister, it would go unused.
I give them away. My friends love it and it makes me happy that someone gets use out of them.
I have a hard time letting go of products, so I try to give them to friends who might be able to use them.
cmachter1, that's so cute.
i go through my makeup periodically and toss anything i haven't used in 3-6 months. i don't want cooties, and if i haven't needed it within that time frame, i probably don't need it at all.
i also make returns to sephora, if it's something i've purchased there. they're great about taking products back.
It's hard to just throw out expensive products when you've hardly used them. There are certain products(like mascara) that you should definitely toss no matter how much it cost and how much is left, but I think stuff like lip gloss shouldn't be thrown out until it just doesn't work anymore.
I have a hard time getting rid of unused products. If the color isn't me and I know that I will never use it, I will give to a friend or toss it out.
