There's no doubt about it, bangs can be sophisticated, flirty, and fun — sometimes all at once. There's a bang shape that works for everybody (and if you don't believe me, check out my guide to finding the right fringe for your face). But when it's time to grow them out, they're more of a burden than a beauty boon. To find out how to deal with bangs when they're in that awkward stage, read more.
- First off, take a look at your bangs. Are they all one length? If not, you need to work on evening them out. A lot of styles are shorter in the middle, and a bit longer on the sides. Wait until the shortest part of your bangs reaches just above your lashes, then trim them (just a touch!) so that they are all the same length. They will be much easier to manage this way.
- Hair accessories are now officially your best friends. Indulge in some retail therapy and pick up a new sparkly clip or fun patent leather headband to help get you through the next few months.
- Focus on styles that help the bangs blend into the rest of your hair. A hot look right now involves parting the front of your hair in the middle, twisting it off to either side, and securing it with clips. This might work better when your bangs are a bit longer. For shorter bangs, try twisting some of the longer hair from the side of your head in with the shorter pieces.
- If you are going to push the bangs back with a headband, use a styling pomade to smooth them back into the rest of your hair first. Otherwise, they will stick straight up behind the band. Try Bumble & bumble Styling Wax ($23). Or you can pin them back with bobby pins, and place a headband or tie a hair ribbon right over the pins to conceal them.
- Play around with your part. A side part is a flattering way to conceal bang regrowth. While hair is still wet, applying a medium hold styling gel or cream, such as mop defining cream ($12), to your bangs, then part and smooth to either side. Pin back if drying naturally, or brush to one side while blow drying. If bangs are still in the shorter stage, you may need to apply some molding wax once dry to get them to stay off to the side. I like Terax Sculpting Wax ($16).
- If you're struggling with the styling options, you can grow out your bangs and keep them at the same time–allow me to explain. Pin back the top section of your bangs, leaving wispy, short pieces underneath. Keep those short, and worn as normal bangs, while growing out just the top section. You will have to keep it pinned back constantly, or under a headband, but this allows you to skip the "growing-out look" altogether. Once the top pieces are long enough, you can blend them into your shorter bangs until they are grown out.

This is never fun.
1A side part and pinning my bangs back with a bobby pin is my go-to thing when i dont feel like trying to style my growing bangs... and if i have the time, i justblow-dry/straightening iron them to the side... this can take a lot of time and be very frustrating when im rushing out in the morning though.
2I grow my bangs out just past my cheekbones...then I get bored and cut them to my eyebrows...then I get bored and grow them out again/then cut them again...it's a vicious circle. I am never satisfied.
3I got Jane Birkin bangs a couple of years ago especially since they weren't trendy at the moment. It would be easier to have Jane Birkin hair if my hair was naturally straight.
4I keep cutting my bangs once they hit me in the middle of the eyes.
I keep saying I want to
grow them out but can't stand the feeling once they start to. Then - if I pin my bangs back - I can't stand the look of my bare forehead!! LOL ... I'm crazy, I guess.
5I just cut bangs last night, and my hair grows fast, so it will be interesting to see what happens. I will probably just sweep them to the side as if it were just a regular layer.
6I've had bangs for the last 5 months and love them, when they start to grow I do a Farrah Fawcett blow dry and like it a lot. No complications here.
7cmachter1--I'm the exact same way. I want long, side-swept bangs, and then I see someone with blunt bangs, and I cut them that way, then I want to grow them out again, and the cycle continues.
8Greentea1203...I just cut mine again about 2 weeks ago kinda thick and blunt...and I am already sweeping them off to the side.
9Ugh, no bangs for me ever again. When I was in high school I was getting my hair cut and the stylist just decided I would look good with bangs and cut them for me without asking. They looked great -- when she did them, but I have pretty curly hair and with sports practice every morning before school, there was no way I was going to make the extra time to blow dry and flat iron my entire head of hair. I hated them so much and was so traumatized by the entire growing out experience that I will never, ever have bangs again!
10I do love the trend right now of "parting the front of your hair in the middle, twisting it off to either side, and securing it with clips." Also, the look where people sort of pin them straight back with some volume. Will keep them in mind next time I grow out my bangs.
11my hair grows so slowly, so it's a pain to grow out my bangs. i just went to the salon and got it cut short and had my hairdresser help me blend the bangs in. it looks a little bit better now. i still want some bangs, albeit not as blunt!
12another one is you can use clip on bangs meanwhile your growing your bangs and pink your real bangs out
13i am actually in hte process of doing this right now... not fun.
14mine are just way to outgrown
15way to much, but i just let them
down, they almost look like if
i had a boob hair cut, but
with a pony tail............
I'm looking to get a different hair style and give my length, and not wanting to lose that it more than likely is going to involve bangs...it just scares me hearing how hard it is to grow them out. Luckily I'm choosing to do it in the summer when my hair tends to grow faster anyhow!
16I love myself with bangs but when I did grow them out I just wore them long and to the side until they could go up with the rest of my hair. If you don't have a lot of time headbands are really cute and pulling bangs back with bobby pins in the front looks really nice.
17THANK YOU SOOO MUCH BELLA FOR POSTING THIS. I WAS JUST GOING TO GOOGLE THIS.
18I'm in a bang grow/cut cycle- and I've got to break it. I always grow them out to my jaw, get bored, cut them up to my eyebrows, remember (too late) that I look like a child with bangs, then grow them out. About to my jaw. Then it starts again.
No more!
19i'm also in that grow-cut circle!now i'm really tired of bangs but i look werid without them!i just cut my bang two weeks ago.
20and i hate bangs in summer
21Last year, I had blunt bangs and straight hair, but I got tired of the maintenance (my hair has a lot of odd kinks in it so it took a lot of time). I went to my stylist, and I ended up getting a bob (and cutting off about nine inches of hair).
As for the bangs? My stylist actually did the last trick mentioned, and on shorter hair, it was really easy to hide the fact that I walked in with slightly overgrown blunt bangs with my cute, Daisy-esque bob.
22I'd love wide bangs but they don't suit me. I've tried a couple of times and I'm still growing them from last summer. They're almost to the chin now... growing bangs out is very slow!
Nice tips, thanks!
23I always have bangs. My latest were sharp and blunt and very long-they suit my face better, but they are on the stage when they get into my eyes and I see nothing. I´ll probably cut them an inch or too, but they grow really quickly. But in any case I love wearing headbands and clips so I don´t mind my long bangs so much.
24I love my bangs but grow them out from time to time, so when i want to grow them I see my hairstylist who point cuts the ends so I can side sweep or part down the middle. If i don't have time to bother i do the straight back with bobby pins rather than the side.
25I love my bangs.
26I'm growing mine all the way out, I liked having bangs but they only looked good at a certain length so I was constantly going to the salon to have them cut every 2 weeks since my hair grows really fast. Now it seems like they aren't growing so fast, so I have to clip them back because they are the straight bangs.
27I've had mine sideswept for a while and I love them although, I do have to trim them every month or so.
28hiiii,
)
29yeah i just cut my bangs but i didnt want them to look to heavy so the lady did these layer uneven thing i dont even know what it is and its not that it looks that baddddd i mean i look good with bangs its just tooo much to take care of, i feel limited to certain hairstyles so now im trying to put them to the side but because of whatever way she cut it they get all poooofed up with they're dry soooooo i allwaysssssss have to clip up the shorter pieces on top of the long pieces...it sucks man, i've learned my lessonn
im growing mine out so i decided to just take my bangs on top of my head and put them in a clip.my hair grows fast.

31Thanks for this post!! I thought I was only one in a few women who goes through the cut/grow out cycle. I had my bangs on the longer side this past winter and then I grew them out this summer, but once again I've just gotten them cut to brow length. No more!! I will try to get them to my jaw at least. It's a vicious cycle.
32I'm In a very akward transition stage with my thick blunt cut bangs.
Here's a tip though, follow a celeb with similar style bangs for new creative ways to style. I cut mine around the same time as Kim Kardashian and Jessica Alba and apperantly they are both in grow out stages too. So I watch out for new pics of them for help. Good luck girls!
33wow... my parents wouldnt let me cut my hair and i didnt want bangs but one day i got really bored and decided to cut them and the are to the bottom of my eyes and they arent completely even and i need help hiding them... ugh... i am soooooo stupid...........
34i just got my bangs for the first time after a long time, I had them as a kid and then wanted something different. I regret it so much now and want to grow it out, but I have no idea how fast ill grow it out, but I just manage to pin it to the sides. It works for now. but I had really nice layers before and it just ruined......my hair was in a good place finally and i always manage to ruin that...by being bored with it lol now i want it back
35I went from having the rockabilly bangs to sideswept and hopefully, cheek length bangs. I prefer the latter better. I look better and I only have to get them trimmed every 3 months.
