A girlfriend of mine just got back from a Southern destination wedding where she booked an afternoon massage before the event. She arrived early to the spa to take full advantage of the steam room and sauna. She was also pleased to see that the girls-only quiet room had a nice, big jacuzzi.
Seeing as she still had some time to kill before her treatment, she jumped right into the warm water without thinking twice. She sat there, enjoying this bliss, until panic set in. Just a few minutes ago she was alone, and suddenly the room was filling with the bridal party and mother of the bride who were there for pre-wedding beauty appointments. No big deal — except for the fact that my friend was in the hot tub completely naked.
She began to worry how she was going to get out of the hot tub since her towel was far away on a chaise. It was one thing for a stranger to see her naked, but for the bridesmaids and mother of the bride? Even worse, the women that were getting ready to join her had come wearing bathing suits. It never occurred to my friend to wear a bathing suit to a spa before! She wound up asking someone for a towel and then slithering out, covering herself in the process — all the while feeling embarrassed that she had been caught commando.
Lesson learned: Only go naked to a spa or gym if you can handle being seen by others. Also, this story makes me wonder: Do you wear bathing suits to steam rooms, saunas and hot tubs at spas?

Yikes! But, if it wasn't for the fact that the rest of her family was there--I don't think it would be necessary to wear a bathing suit. Personally, I would because I am weird like that, but it's normal to go commando.
1I don't care, I'd've gotten up & out of the tub pretty unabashedly. It'd have made them more uncomfortable than I would have me, and I would have laughed a little at that.
Seriously, what do I have that another woman doesn't, and vice versa? Don't ogle, but there doesn't have to be a big deal made out of it. I left 7th grade gym class a LONG time ago.
2I think it depends on the Spa and the kind of environment they set. I go to a place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where nudity is totally fine in the tubs. I usually get a private hot tub with (female) family members and close friends, and we all go nudie. I would hate to wear a swimsuit while in the sauna! I think if everyone else is comfortable and nude, I am too.
3i wear a bathing suit in my gym's hot tub - it's co-ed! I wear a towel in the sauna. I would feel weird lounging naked in public and usually everyone else has towels on too.
4It really depends on the place. I go commando if I'm at the Mandarin or Four Seasons Spa. If I'm at the clubhouse then it's always with swimmers on! I also make sure I go alone when I go commando...really don't feel comfortable with my mom there if I'm naked! Ew!
5Of course!!! I would never go naked.
6i think it's perfectly acceptable to be naked in a steam room or sauna if one is comfortable doing it.
7This happened on Rules of Engagement last week. It's so funny. Personally, I'm too modest to be naked in the hot tub or sauna.
8I think most gyms have rules about nudity in the spa and sauna areas. That makes sense, they probably don't get cleaned as often as they should, and you never know who might be there and be offended by nudity.
9Yes, I wear one. I wouldn't go naked.
10Why...Whyyyyy do people get offended by nudity? I can understand people being offended by gratuitous sexuality but nudity? We all have the same parts!
11I definitely wear one.
I'm not offended by nudity, but I wouldn't want people seeing me naked. With my girlfriends, yes we skinny dip and stuff like that.
12I would always wearing a bathing suit. I think it's more hygienic than going nude. Plus, you're at a classy spa and I don't think other women care to see your privates.
13Here in Japan we go to the onsen where you don't wear any clothes, women only/men only areas. It really depends on your comfort level. We bring a small towel with us, and when you walk around, you can cover up your front. I don't know if I would do it in the U.S. If everyone around me was wearing bathing suit. People in the U.S. I find more conservative, and I think I would feel the negative energy of their thoughts if I were to go around naked. That would bother me.
14ps. I wouldn't go nude in the sauna...and I agree with elle1978 about cleaning. The bath areas are cleaned here every couple of hours here.
15hygiene women - think hygiene!
16I am not worried about nudity, but the thought of.....ok never mind...ick
I bring a towel to lie down on in the sauna or the steam room because I'm never quite sure how clean the facilities are. I figure there's nothing these women haven't already seen on themselves so I go naked.
17I'm a big prude. I don't have a problem with others going naked but I definitely wouldn't do it myself. At my gym there are always naked women running around - free spirits.
18i don't know
19that would be
interesting the
way i would
react, but i think
i just go naked to
grab my towel, and
left the room....
Maybe do some European
accent, LOL.....
Hah! That is so something I would do (and then be totally mortified about after). It definitely depends on the place, in my mind.
It can't hurt to ask the receptionist at the front desk before you de-robe, though!
20I would stay in the spa until I was ready to leave, but my family and friends have all seen me naked several times. Especially in a spa, I would think nudity would be acceptable.
