Earlier today, TeamSugar member Elynlovesyou posed a good question. She's trying to stay fit, but she often doesn't work out between work and school because of the time-suck that is postgym grooming. "Is there a way to make my hair last through a workout," she asked. "Or a way to revive it without having to wash/wet it and dry it again?"
Yep, absolutely! First, I would suggest wearing your hair in a ponytail or bun. If you have bangs, use a barrette to keep them off of your forehead; this will keep any sweat out of your hair. All of this seems like an obvious choice, but every now and then I see women wearing Gisele-style waves at the gym. (This baffles me.) To find out how to freshen up postworkout hair, read more.
After the workout, if you don't have time to shower, you have a few options to refresh your hair:
- If your bangs happen to be greasy, a quick sinkside shampoo and minute-long blow-dry should do the trick.
- If your problem is a sweaty scalp, dry shampoo might be the answer. Oscar Blandi's version ($11–$19) will do the trick, but I really like Biolage Oil Control Treatment because it soaks up oil while puffing up the hair. Either way, just apply the product close to your scalp to cut down on the greasy look. If you have very light hair, you can also substitute baby powder in a pinch.
- If you're battling flat hair, add a volumizer such as Aveda Volumizing Tonic ($15) to your gym bag. Spray the volumizer near the roots and brush (or finger-comb) it through your hair. This will provide a little lift without requiring a blow-dry.

Yeah, but the rest of you still has to shower.
1I usually wear my hair and a ponytail/bun and then use a lululemon headban to keep it our of my face. When I am done at the gym, I usually look ok enough to run some errands before heading home to make dinner and shower
2I want to figure out how to get my hair a messy "neat" bun because I have a lot of hair. I have trouble using anything to put my hair up because I just end up stretching everything out.
I'd like to wear my hair like in the following link for keeping my hair out of the way when I'm getting all sweaty and gross and just to wear in general. I should mention that it's my goal to figure how to get my over abundant thick naturally wavy hair in a bun like this because I hate ponytails and don't like it as an option for the hot weather.

3See my hair would be all flat on top, poofy on bottom and most likely have an elastic mark in it. I have pretty long (bra strap) hair.
4The easiest and best buns I've done is with a normal hair tie and a scrunchie. I put my hair in a high ponytail, then wind the hair around it, then use a scrunchie around the bun. Did that all through my middle school years. I must've looked like a little grandma, but it keeps the hair off your face! I was still running around like a demon child then, so I didn't care how I looked. Nowadays, I use a ficcare innovation clip to put my hair in a french twist. It's super easy once you get the hang of it. It's much easier than learning to french braid your own hair, which I still haven't managed to do...
5But what about the "ho" bath? That's just deodorant and perfume after your workout.
6I'm so happy that this was posted.
7I know the rest of you has to be showered... but washing your hair/conditioning and drying takes up atleast 20 minutes. I need that 20 minutes.
i second the dry shampoo suggestion, but don't love the oscar blandi pick. it smells like lemon pledge... yuck. i much prefer rene furterer's naturia spray--it has a much more neutral scent.
8Francoise if you put your hair up in a bun before it dries all the way, it won't be straight pulled back like that picture but it will be a messy bun that will look pulled together. I've done it before when I've had to run out the door without time to blow dry but still needed to look good and people always comment on how cute it looks.
9Francoise, I have the same hair as you. As it got to waist length, it was so heavy and voluminous it was messing up my equilibrium in dance class. I ended up cutting it to chin-length and donating it to locks of love. I kind of miss it, but I can pirouette now!
10my hair goes into a ponytail anyway during a work out but i still sometimes sweat a lot on my scalp and even after i have a shower i still dont feel clean enough if i havent washed my hair as well
11if you have light hair you can use baby powder...I swear by this. You just sprinkle it in and it gets rid of the greasiness and/or sweat. It also helps to keep volume (or add) up front when it starts to go limp.
12I do the baby powder trick when i don't have time in the morning to wash my hair...it works well
But i would feel yucky going anywhere after the gym without taking a full shower! Even if i shower the rest of my body, i feel that my hair is way too sweaty and messy to go on
about my day...that's why i try to go in the evening so i can go straight home after the workout! Although the idea of dry shampoo sounds interesting...
13EXCELLENT post! This is a dilemma for anyone trying to lead a healthy lifestyle who tackles the lunchtime workout. Thanks for the tips!
14your suggestions prove that you've never met me. i work out at the end of the day because there is no post-workout hair help. i sweat like a man so my hair is completely wet once i leave the gym. i can pull it back into a ponytail but i'm a brown chick and my hair isn't the same as my fellow pale sisters. got any advice for brown hair care?
15Kcwebgirl, I'm mixed so I know ur pain. I work out late too. I find that putting on one of those (horid I know) 80s looking sweatbands help keep roots from puffing up. Then I try to clip my hair back. If I find any bends in my hair from the clip I put a little Jasmine oil on my hair and blow dry it upside down. My hair looks shiny and has a little volume.
