Today's foundations are so much better than what was available even five years ago. The days of masklike foundation are pretty much over, and now you can actually score shades that look like skin rather than makeup. Napoleon Perdis Light-Diffusing Makeup ($42) is one of my recent finds; it contains particles that reflect light, which helps mask imperfections. It makes my skin look eerily perfect, but it looks so natural that an esthetician recently assumed I wasn't wearing makeup. All in all, it's great for those days when you want to look a little more polished than usual.
And yet, after digging around a bit, I'm terribly disappointed at the same time. To find out why you'd be overpaying for this product, read more.
I genuinely do like this foundation, but as it turns out, Napoleon Perdis doesn't formulate its own makeup. This is common in the cosmetics industry; many of the same brands are created and packaged at the same factories. In the case of Napoleon Perdis, it looks like the entire line is from Your Name, a business that creates makeup and allows buyers to slap their own name on the package. After browsing Your Name's online catalog, it's pretty clear that everything from the shade names to the packaging just has the brand name slapped on it. I did a little sleuthing, and found the same foundation at many small, independent online shops — for about half the price. For instance, at DermUs, the same foundation is $20 instead of $42.

This isn't shocking, but it is disappointing. While the product is good, unsuspecting women will be paying so much more for it than they need to. And unless it's on sale, Napoleon Perdis is quite pricey. So while I wholeheartedly recommend this foundation, I can't recommend paying twice as much simply for the brand name.

thanks for the truth Bella!
1Thanks for the info. That's kind of annoying that I can't check the cheaper one in person to see which shade would look right.
2Wait, are all their products from distributors like this?
3Nice investigative work!
4Great detective work, Bella! This makes me wonder about other makeup I have bought!
5Yikes. That's really not cool. Thanks for the warning! I like my makeup to be at least somewhat original, and for someone to have thought about it...
6Wow...thanks Bella. I explored and they didn't even change the names of some of products, woah, just stunning.
7When I worked in a perfume store in high school, we sold YourName cosmetics with our logo on them. But we were a cheap little store. I'm shocked that NP is doing this.
8Wow thanks for the info. They do the same thing with canned food, but I never thought that the same thing would come from a big name make up company!
9The packaging is even the same. They literally only changed it by slapping on the brand's logo.
10wow, i never knew that. thanks for letting us know that a cheaper bottle of foundation could be just as good as the expensive one.
11Wow. I've just been browsing the YourName site and comparing it with NP products... it's literally ALL the same. Disappointing. Maybe that's why NP appears to be on its way out of Sephora?
12Yeah, it is really disappointing. A lot of cosmetics companies do something like this (for instance, many lip liners come out of the same factory, and some might have, say, Chanel on them and others might have L'Oreal). But to see that the packaging and colors haven't been tweaked at all was surprising. I don't think NP products are bad or anything, but I do think they are expensive for what you get.
13Thanks for the info!
14I'm considering heading down to the NP store, trying this stuff on, then buying online - thanks, Bella!
15shocking! i also see that another foundation i bought from a small online makeup store was from yourname, although that doesn't surprise me.
16Thank you for this Bella.
I was recently turned onto this line and was bummed about the prices but now thanks to you I can save some major cash!! Wooo.
17Oh wow...I'm glad you found a cheaper version!!
18If you really like light, sheer foundation, try Clinique's Almost Powder SPF 15 Makeup - it's like a wet powder that evens out your skin tone and hides flaws, and it has sunscreen so there will be less problems to hide in the future. It's $22.50, so it's not cheap, but it's worth it. Clinique also has an Almost Makeup SPF 15 liquid that my mom and sister love, but it does leave you looking dewy, which is fine, but combined with the Vegas heat I look a little damp.
Yeah, I'm a big Clinique fan....
19It is disillusioning when you learn about these things, but, hey, same product for less, bonus! I'm pretty much a mineral girl now, but I'm tempted to try this. Years ago I used a lot of Chanel, but alas, the hefty price tag, and a few chincy clerks turned me off. Man, did Chanel's powder foundation work in the sun!
It's the same kind of thing in the bra industry also...and clothing. Seek and you will find!
20np is not the only brand that has done this, and while as a production person i get it, i am always annoyed when the markup is much higher than it should be just because of a name.
another beauty product that is marked up because of then name slapped on it is the jonathan shower purifier. its $95 at sephora, but in truth,it is the same as the aquasana purifier that sells on amazon, without the "jonathan" name for $67 or for $109 with a replacement cartridge..
21oh wow i am shocked....
22Private labeling is very common....every spa, store, salon does this. I do it! Sugar could do it....hmmm....
23i tried to check out your name's website, but their site is down. bella - do you know what other "name brands" your name makes?

Unbelievable. You know what's the most shocking - NP couldn't be
bothered even coming up with their own bottle design.
26I hate that this is done and the company supposedly responsible for it is praised for a product they didn't even create.
27Hmmmm....thanks for the info!
28I heard this rumor but had not seen any confirmation from a reputable source (like Bella!). Thanks for the investigation!
29Ah, cheers for this, Bella!
30Does anyone know of cheaper products that are the same as their more expensive counterparts?
