Fragrance knockoffs have been around since the '80s, when Designer Imposters released Primo, a knockoff of Giorgio Beverly Hills. Now there's competition in the form of Instyle fragrances — no relation to In Style. Both promise to deliver more eau for your dough, but which one comes out on top?
| Designer Imposters | Instyle | Advantage | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packaging | A brash melee of clashing colors adorns each box of perfume. | Minimalist; a typographer's nightmare of competing font weights and serifs. | Designer Imposters. At least they put a little effort into it. |
| Sales pitch | If you like [Actual Perfume], you'll love our knockoff! | An impression of [Actual Perfume] | Instyle. The writing makes it sound more artistic. |
| Best perfume name | With Exposé, Babe, and Yeah Baby, DI allows you to recall a '90s girl band, a movie about a pig, and Austin Powers. | Nothing! No names for these "impressions." Lame. | Designer Imposters, obviously. |
| Price | $9.49/ounce | $11.99/3.4 ounces | Instyle |
| But how do they smell? | Close, but no cigar. The scent is unmistakably cheaper than the original. | Pretty much the same, although the knockoff of SJP's Lovely was somewhat convincing. | Instyle |

I am a fragrance knock off SNOB! I never have liked them. You can get the real thing at great prices. You just have to know HOW to shop for them! Can I get an AMEN?
1Amen
I can honestly say I've never used a knock off fragrance. They just don't smell the same. I mean, if you don't have a specific fragrance in mind and you want to save some money you can head to your local TJ Maxx and buy a "real" perfume for as much as or a little bit more than the fake ones.
2HA! I just saw a knock-off of Thierry Mugler's Angel!
Verdict: HORRIBLE!
3I tried the DI version of CK ... and then vomited.
4Amen sister!
My mom gave me a bunch of them once. I tried to use them, but they just smelled weird.
I took them to work to kind of use as 'room spray' but they're all just still so GAGGY.
Had to toss them. I think they just arent the same.
5Like Brittanyk said, if you are vigilant about it you can find the real scent for a good and resonable price like TJmaxx or eBay. There is no need to launch an olfactory assault on yourself and those around you by wearing knock-offs.
6OMG, those 80s Designer Imposter scents were SO bad!
7I know, right! It sucks when you can't even use them as "room spray."
8Awful...
9aAww, i remember stealing,
10these from my aunts, when
i was very little, you could
say this was like my very
first perfumes.... now a days
only originals for me.
I don't see what the point of these are. They are really cheap and don't smell anything like the real thing.
11I have one of these sitting under my bathroom sink lol. A nail salon gave it to me as a free gift for being a first time customer. I've never used it and never plan on using it. I love perfumes too much to waste my time on one of these cheap knock offs. Yuck.
I just got it out, it's "Our version of Chanel No 5 by Jean Philippe Paris" lol. This is going in my goodwill box now...
12You cant imitate the originals and sacrifice ingredients!! Impostars
13are cheap and smell cheap!! Not to mention they give me a headache!!
oh well I tried "huff"
Only the real stuff, like it was mentioned, if not then why bother?
14only the real stuff for me, not knocking the knock off but I have just never had good luck with them. I have never heard of the InStyle but DI is awful!
15I think the Instyle fragrances are pretty good, I don't have a lot of cash to spend and it's better than the cheap stuff at BBW I like Angel and Lovely I'm not a snob that has to have all that. I believe it's all the same stuff and the con is the expensive REAL fragrances, what a rip come on, let's get real
INSTYLE IS COOL!
16INSTYLE IS THE BEST! YOU ZOMMBIES GOTTA TRY IT! STOP BEING TAKEN BY THE MACHINE.
17PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE IT DOES THE MOST FOR YOU. GET REAL PLEASE!!
NOW I DON'T MEAN TO TAKE OFFENSE TO ANYONES PERSONAL POSITIONS BUT COME ON, TALK ABOUT RIPOFFS WHY IN YOUR RIGHT MIND SPEND ANY MORE THE 12 BUCKS ON A FRAGRANCE.
1845 BANGERS IS A LOT OF G. FOR WHAT? NOT MUCH MORE THAN WHAT YOU GET WITH INSTYLE
I GOT MINE AT WALGREENS, YEAH LAUGH, IT'S NOT THE MALL OR SAC'S 5TH AVE. BUT IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD AND COME ON THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT....
My eyes (and ears) hurt from reading posts in caps...
!!
19I've seen these, should I say not-so-real, & the real-deals jostle on the same shelf at Wal*Mart. Like, CK One, & an "impression" of CK One side-by-side.. it's amusing. & if paying for a non-fake is hurting your wallet then buy a 5/6 ml travel size for 6 bucks. Remember, a little goes a long way esp. if you bathe every day
I have used some of the knockoff fragrances from Designer Imposter-Wanna Play?, Confess- and they weren't that bad. Can they give the designers a run for their money? No. I discovered Instyle like a year ago, and they seem to better at copying designers than Designer Imposter. Everyone wants the real thing and I'm no different. Sometimes you have to settle however. But when you can afford the real thing, definately, snatch it up!
20Oh, and sugaslime, I feel you. I understand how you feel about not feeling like you should pay a ridiculous amount for a brand name when you can get a basically the same from a lesser name. And you should always do what makes you feel good.
21ahahahaha I remember the one that smelled like cotton candy!
22I tried the "Angel" from InStyle and was hooked. For some reason, it smells really good on me, and everyone always asks me what it is that I'm wearing. Some of them smell really horrible (SJP, White Linen and the Light Blue versions suck), but the Glow also smells nice and light.
I have an arsenal of fragrances that range from the high-end brands to the inexpensive. I have been wearing scents long enough to know that it really doesn't matter how much the stuff costs (for example, White Diamonds smells AWFUL on me, and so does Opium, Poison, Chanel #5, and the real D & G Light Blue). Whatever the fragrance, if it agrees with your body chemistry, stick to it.
23some of the knock off stuff isn't so bad, and the real stuff is severely overpriced, you're just paying for the name and packaging more than anything else
24I HAVE FOUND THE INSTYLE FRAGRANCES OR THE IMPRESSIONS OF THEIR FRAGRANCES TO BE AMONG THE BEST I HAVE EVER USED.. 25Lord knows I've tried to like the knock off fragrances, but they NEVER smell like the real thing to me. I have yet to find a cheap copy of Light Blue that smells exact! Even if they please my nose at first, when I actually sniff the imposter vs. the real deal side by side I can always tell the difference. They usually get the top notes right, but they miss the bottom notes completely.
