Would you give up mascara? Allergan, the maker of Botox, hopes you will. The company is working on a drug to make eyelashes grow longer. The catch? It's already available for different purposes.
Lumigan, a formulation of bimatoprost, is a glaucoma drug that can be used (off-label, of course) to grow eyelashes. Cosmetics such as RevitaLash and the original formula of Jan Marini Age Intervention Eyelash have used the drug in their formulations, but Allergan is the first to seek FDA approval for its cosmetic use.
But like any drug, bimatoprost has side effects. According to the FDA, it may cause the skin around the eye to darken, or the eyes could change color altogether. Not exactly the cosmetic wonders I'd like to experience. I'll stick with mascara or lash extensions, but if the FDA approval goes through, expect to see people rush to their doctors in search of longer lashes. Will you be one of them?

I so would not do this but htat is because my eyelashes are SUPER long already which is a bit of pain when you also wear glasses and you have to wear the glasses low on ur nose!!!(because poking ur eye with ur own lashes is not fun) BUT if they had something to make the crazy thick then I might think about it!!!!
1I don't want to use something that has side effects just to have longer lashes. When they say the eye could change color are they referring to the skin or the actual iris?
2Francoise, they're referring to the skin around the eye AND the iris itself. Apparently it can make your eyes browner. I like brown eyes, but I don't like the idea of changing my eye color just to have longer lashes.
3Ugh, me neither! I wouldn't dare risk darkening my beautiful baby blue eyes, nor the skin around my eyes. I'm blessed with long lashes as it is, and false ones or just mascara should be sufficient for those with not-so-long lashes. It's just too big a trade-off.
4Nope, I have enough discoloration/dark eye circles as it is. I'll stick to my beloved eyelash curler and mascara...
5No way. I have tiny lashes but I still wouldn't do it.
6If this drug is used to treat glaucoma, then wouldn't it have other side effects as well (like lowering eye pressure)?
7Just like contacts. I don't have a problem putting on Mascara. side effects and other risks are not worth it.
8I tried the Jan Marini Age Intervention for my eyelashes and had no lash growth. I used it for 8 months. I think I saw no result because I used the new formulation not the original formula. I believe the FDA pulled Jan Marini's original product off the shelves. I'm pretty sure I would not try Allergan's lash product. I'm sick of fighting my lash length. I'm just going to stick with my lancome mascara.
9no thank you/
10I'm all for taking a chance if you think the benefits are worthwile but, wow how could anyone consider using a products where the side effects are so much worse than gaining long lashes? It would be silly. So I guess you can count me out of being one of those in line, luckily my eye lashes are long so this will never come up.
11the side effects sound awful. i'd rather use a good mascara or false lashes.
12I already have dark circles. And my lashes are long - BUT BLONDE. I need mascara to darken my lashes. Just lengthening isn't enough.
13I'd never use this...my lashes are really long already. And the side effects...no thank you.
14I'd rather have normal length lashes than dark circles. I think some women won't bother to look into or just ignore the side effects and just want to have longer lashes. I personally hate taking any sort of medication and would never take a glaucoma drug if I didn't even have the disease in the first place!
15Oh hell freaking NO! Too risky for me.
16Nooooo way. My lashes are pretty long as it is, and I like my makeup, so I'll be sticking with mascara. I don't like taking unnecessary medicines or drugs or supplements, especially not out of sheer vanity!
17Changing your eye colour, weird! lol Mine are so incredibly dark as it is, I wonder if they would turn black.
18This is crazy...a friend of mine is using glucoma medicine and his lashes grew long and thick and look blue! It is a bother...I will work wth fakes ..thank you!
19I'm with the rest of you. I have pretty long lashes and dark circles, don't need them any darker. I enjoy putting on makeup. I'll stick with mascara.
20I've got incredibly short lashes (you can't even see them when my eyes are open), and would actually half-consider this, even with the side effects.
21no thanks. i will stick with talika lipocils.
22no way...
23This is so silly! I've never just been like..."wow if only there was some drug to make my EYELASHES more beautiful!" I mean, granted, I do wear mascara, but it also gives me a "done" look. I never thought I'd prefer makeup to something that would make you "naturally" prettier, but yeah, I'll stick with mascara.
Pretty please drug makers, could you try to cure acne, because that's doing a lot more damage to my self-esteem and beauty than my freaking eyelashes are.
24I work at an opthalmologist's office and a lot of patients use this for their Glaucoma. I'm going to have to look closer to see if they all have unbelievably long lashes now lol.
I would never use this stuff just to get long lashes. Mascara & an eyelash curler's good enough for me!
25Looks like most of you who would avoid this stuff is because you have long lashes already, which is pointless to even look into this miracle product. Well us asian girls who are born with short straight lashes would seriously look into this if proven effective with no side effects of course.
26But I'm already using Ardell's lash and brow accelerator and it doesn't work miracles but it does make my lashes thicker and just slightly longer. Also did i mention this stuff is $4 at rite aid?
I would love to grow my eyelashes longer if it's possible, but with reasonable side effects. How could it make your eyes actually change color?? That sounds HORRIBLE.
27i've used revitalash...for a couple weeks now
28and this stuff does work.
My lashes are fuller and longer...
but the skin around my eyes have darkened a little bit.
but it's not like dark circles like many of you worry about.
you apply the stuff like eye liner at the base of your lashes...and it's only this area that is affected.
Length doesn't matter to me as much as volume. I'm all set, I'll pass on this.
29carhornsinapril, i use talika lipocils too and it really works! and its safe and natural, so i feel good about using it. people are always commenting on my lashes
you can get it at sephora and its $40.
30i wouldn't dare try that!!! i love my green eyes way 2 much!!!
31This is seriously insane...
32Wow, that seems like a really stupid idea. People want pills for everything...
33I'd rather spend the extra minute in the morning curling and putting mascara on my eyelashes instead of worrying about the side effects of this drug! It doesn't take too long to swipe on some mascara
34A friend bought Revitalash at an Ophthalmologist's place. She was never told of these side effects. So am forwarding this article to her. I also checked the Revitalash website. They mentioned the risk of discoloration of the skin at the base of the eyelashes but not about changing the color of your eyes!
35If they didn't change your eye color, I'd be all for it! (I already have natural under eye circles but whatever) But, my eyes are green and I love them... so mascara it is for me
36i have short, sparse, and thin lashes so i would totally try this! i have dark brown eyes anyway, and dark undereye circles (which i am always trying to fix and conceal!), and as long as the darkening is reversible i dont see anything wrong with it - esp. if it might help *improve* eyesight
