Every woman's had those days where she just can't get herself out of a bad beauty funk — real or imagined. Your self-image is about as worthless as a penny and it continues on a downward spiral as you think about facing your co-workers with your giant pimple, your disastrous haircut, your puffy eyes or whatever else you feel is glaringly unattractive about yourself.
On days like this, sometimes it's best to take a break and treat yourself to a massage, a movie, a bath or anything that makes you feel special and grounded. We've all been guilty of losing perspective; some of us are just better at managing it than others. So tell me, have you ever called in sick because of a beauty-related issue?

I've called in sick for a mental health/beauty sleep catch-up day.
1I totally forgot until after I cast my vote but there was this one time. . . I was about 13-14 and I thought "well, if Olive Oil is good for my hair; maybe I should just put a bunch in my hair." So I took like a CUP (!) and doused my hair in it. Well, of course it wouldn't all wash out in the shower that evening and the next morning my hair was still just completely oily. I stayed home from school that day and my mom had to use dish soap to wash my hair out and get it looking normal again
Jr. High, what an akward stage!
2I used to skip school all the time because I woke up and got ready and I'd have like one strand of hair out of place so I'd freak out and refuse to go to school. Or I'd have crazy days where I couldn't find anything to wear and it would be a fat day. Luckily, I'm getting less crazy in my old age
I don't think I've ever missed work because of a beauty related matter, but I definitely have missed school.
3I called into work last week b/c I had a nasty sty on my eye - hurt like hell.
4Unfortunately, I was always required to go to school..regardless of how un-pretty I looked or felt. :T &As far as work goes, I haven't yet had to call in sick to work because of a beauty-related matter. Then again, all of the places I've worked at have had really strict attendance policies, so I wouldn't risk it. :T
5No way! I couldn't stand the guilt.
6I definitely have skipped classes because I was too lazy to get up in time to shower and my hair was beyond the limits of acceptability. I've been LATE for work because of oversleeping and choosing to go through my full beauty routine, but never missed a full day...
7not to work, but i've missed school because of a bad reaction to a face wash. i woke up in the morning and my face was bright red and my eyes were swollen. i didnt have to go to the hospital or anything but i refused to leave the house like that.
8Ummm, I couldnt justify that. I have LOTS of days that I feel like a total ugmo, but my job shouldnt suffer because of it. The only thing that I have called in for that even comes close is menstrual-related issues?? (bloating, but cramping to boot...)
9Never for just a bad hair day, but for a bad haircut. And it wasn't really because of the haircut, it was because I was up all night the night before crying about it. My hair was literally 3/4 of an inch long all over my head.
10Not only could I not justify it, I couldn't afford to miss work just because I didn't feel pretty. I need my 40 hours! Vacation time is for beaches, not for pimples.
11nope, i'm too much of a nerd! i'd feel so guilty.
12i have never...but i thought about it this morning actually....last nite i finished reading "My Sister's Keeper" AND watched "P.S. I Love You!" Double whammy in the puffy-eye department this morning!
13No, school's too important. However, I did cancel a date because of a pimple. =/
14Nope, but last year I did show up in class with seriously purple eyelids for whole week.
Bad breakup.
That's when I discovered the importance of wearing white pencil under your lashline.
15I would get made fun of for it, we are pretty open at my company - I would rather deal with the humiliation of a zit
16Nope! I'd feel too guilty. I have hats, hairbands, etc for the hair-related disasters and lots of concealor for the beauty-related disasters. I don't think I could ever justify staying home for my appearance.
17I tried to dye my hair back from brown to its original strawberry blonde color and ended up with bleached roots and neon orange tips...I think it was in the best interests of my coworkers that they didnt have to see me in that state!
18I've skipped classes because I don't feel like leaving my room because I don't want to face to the world looking the way I do, but I've never missed work. I've been pretty lucky with summer jobs, none of them have really required me to look perfect. For a museum/ tour guide/ general maintenance position I had, if I was having a bad day, I'd just go work outside and get covered with dirt and grass clippings so I had an excuse. At the golf course, my boss gave the staff really good discounts, so I've got 3 Callaway hats to hide under (two are pink with rhinestones).
19I would feel even worse if I called in for such a lame excuse as a beauty crisis. But I am lucky I could call in a vacation day if it was really bad, like if I had a hair dye accident and my hair turned neon orange, I work in a very conservative place and they would send me home and tell me to fix it anyway (it did happened to me once, but I was working in an art studio and I just went with it and my co-workers thought I did it on purpose).
20I've never been one to skimp on taking "sick" days (when I need a mental health day, I take it!) But I've never called in for a beauty-related problem.
21No , But I have sure wanted to. But money is more important. Can mess with your job. Can you imagine every time you didn't feel pretty you stayed home. You would never get anywhere.
22I'm a teacher, so I feel like it would be unfair to the kids to not come in for something so trivial. It would also cost the district extra money in the form of sub pay.
Maybe it's even a good lesson for the kids: sometimes you just gotta get up and go to work, no matter how you look. You can make a joke of the bad hair day, or you can just wear concealer over that zit...I'm not saying you don't need to make an effort, but unless your job performance and requirements are directly related to your physical appearance, then it's probably not necessary to stay home over it.
23I did miss class once because of something similar. Once, the hot water went out in our apartment. As a result, I couldn't take a shower that day. I need showers in the morning so that I can actually think (not to mention freshen myself up). As if that wasn't bad enough, there was a test that day too. Needless to say, I took that day off. Fortunately, I got to take the test another day.
24I would definitely feel like it but nope, I would just not look in the mirror and avoid one all that day. Stuff happens, no point in stopping living life. The only unfortunate thing about that is if you're around people who carry their camera with them everywhere and just have to capture something about that day, ugh.
25Not that I can recall...
26i don't think i've ever skipped school because of a beauty related issue. i've been late A LOT, because it took a little longer than usually to do my hair or make-up or to choose clothes, but i haven't skipped a whole day.
27I missed school because I had an alergy and my upper lips was so swollen :S
28this is the most ridiculous question... but what's worse is that there are people who have done it.
29Nope. Just for mental health days.
30Nope - though I will admit when I've had an ugly pimple or something and it just won't cover up... I definitely don't want to go. I usually just grin & bear it
Or part my hair to cover it!
31nop even if i did look really bad and did not want to go to school my dad would make me go anyway.
32so happy that its summer!!
No I wouldn't do that to my coworkers. I'm lucky if I call in sick when i'm really sick!
I remember when I was a teenager though, I put a small band-aid over this monstrous pimple on my forehead. One of my male friends got all offended & asked me if he should cover his whole face since he had acne. Yeah, awkward. Anyway, that was the last time I whipped out a band-aid to cover a zit.
33you skip work or school because you don't feel pretty enough?? honey, please. i bet nobody's even looking. if i had a coworker that skipped work and i found out that was the reason, i would think they were really childish or had a bad case of the princess disease. even if you go to work on an ugly day, at least you're still getting paid...and seriously, unless you're a celeb, model, or porn star nobody is going to scrutinize your appearance that much.
34'Kay. So I don't work so I'll relate this back to school.
I skip a lot and whatever...but I've never missed a full day of school just because I didn't feel pretty or whatever. I might skip a class to wash my hair when I think it doesn't look it's best but no more than that. Honestly. I just take it like a man. No one really notices this kinda stuff anyways, I assume.
35I didn't go to school one day because I had a huge cold sore that really hurt and was just plain nasty for me and everyone around me.
36can anyone tell me more about these mental health days? i've never heard of those here in the uk.
37Guilty. It was the whole "time of the month" I felt fat and ugly, situation. I work with a lot of customers and if I don't feel like I'm going to have a decent day, then I will call off. It doesn't happen often though.
38I've skipped class but I've never called in sick to work due to my appearance. This is my first "real" job and I make it a point only call in sick if I'm actually sick.
39many times.... skipped school when i had a home hair dye mishap (right before a very important dance mind you!) I also played hookie from work a few years ago after a facial gone bad. I had a horrible reaction to it and could not leave the house for a week without a hat and sunglasses!
40i called on sick once, but not
41for a beauty matter, because
me and some friends planned
everything to go shopping, but
i called in sick LOL !!
Um, wow. Really? I have never done this, it seems like the pinnacle of vanity getting in the way.
42Nope. That's what ponytails and concealer are for. Besides, I don't get paid to look pretty; I get paid to work.
43when i was a young pseudo professional wanna be in san francisco, a pigeon dropped a present on my coif and i just could not bear how icky it was. i washed up, repeatedly and just never could make myself feel good enough to leave the house that day.
44No. Never.
I hate calling in sick when I actually am sick, let alone for something like that.
45Everyone's done it. Whoever says they haven't is just lying.
46Yes, because I just didn't feel pretty that day.
