Last week, I had the pleasure of being pounded and stoned. (Wait, that doesn't sound right.) I'm talking about a massage, and the one I had at San Francisco's Nob Hill Spa was as therapeutic as it was luxurious. But before the treatment, I watched a spa newbie try to figure out what, exactly, to do with her robe. So if you're unsure like she was, here are a few guidelines to make your massage treatment flow smoothly.
- In the room: After you change from street clothes into a robe, your massage therapist will lead you to your treatment room. He or she will then give you a moment to slip out of the robe and into the sheets on the massage table.
- What to wear: Most people like to be completely nude underneath the sheets, but others prefer to leave their underpants on. Either way is fine; your massage therapist won't mind one way or the other.
- Ditch the bra, though: Again, it won't be weird if you wear your bra during the massage, but it will severely hinder the therapist's abilities — which means that your massage won't be as good as it should be. You'll be on your stomach for the most part, so your chest will be concealed. When it's time for you to flip over, the therapist will block your body by holding up the sheet, with no risk of booby display.

This is why I love you, Bella.
This post reminds me I'm long overdue for a
massage...
1I needed this info a couple of weeks ago,now I can relax knowing the masseuse isn't snickering at my undies.
2You're too cute, Bella
3mmmmm
4I love being nakie for ym massagies!
Jersey Wrap dresses are the way to go. Quick to get in and out of, easy to hang- ok if it gets oily...
5See, I had my first massage about a week ago- and I didn't feel any different when the hour was up than when I started!
6LOL@Bella's introduction of this post
I've never had a professional massage, but as long as the masseuse is a girl I wouldn't mind being nak'd; I look good nak'd
7Bookish...it depends what kind of massage you got and how effective the masseuse was. I just got a massage on Friday and it was really good. It was a man and he had really strong hands. The one that I had prior to that was a girl and I guess I mistakenly picked a massage that was really gentle. I didn't feel much with that one. I tend to like "strong women" or a man doing my massages.
8I've actually never had a massage...I want one!
9Better pounded and stoned than stewed and tattooed.
10Oh, I love getting naked a having a talented man use his big, strong hands to make my body feel so wonderful.
11The truth is that my usual massage therapist is a handsome guy about my age. And he has great taste in music, so he'll play, say, Iron & Wine during the massage. So of course I get all dorky and think, "OMG, I am NAKED and everything else is like a DATE."
The other thing is... those hot stone massages are amazing. I don't know why I didn't try one years ago. Soooo nice.
12This is such a good feature! Can we do a series of these? Like what happens when you get a Brazilian. I mean, I know what the point of the wax is, but do you keep your underwear on? Are you on your back?
13The hot stone massages are the best!!
14Now I can't wait to actually try one.
15ms660bk, sure thing!
16I want a massage right now.
17My husbands been trying to get me to go with him to get a massage but it's just not my thing. I'd feel uncomfortable the whole time. I know, i'm weird
18that was helpful! me never been to a spa though.
19I had a massage last week and mentioned this article. The policy there is not to remove anything that would make you uncomfortable, but the therapist said that leaving on your bra really made her job difficult. Most massage therapist that I have had are very professional and good at keeping things under cover.
20A professional massage therapist isn't interested in anything other than giving you a great treatment... we see a lot of bodies of all shapes and sizes. The key thing to remember is do what YOU feel comfortable with, talk to the therapist and ask questions. But as a rule of thumb from the therapists point of view less is better. I you are worried about exposing your chest a back fastening bra or bikini top works well cos you can unhook and slip the straps down which allows good flowing treatments on the back - and then hook back up for the rest of the treatment. All therapists are trained in the use of draping and should use towels or sheets to cover the parts of the body bot being worked on (to preserve your modesty and keep you warm and comfortable)
Few beauty massage techniques (ocassionally sports massage) go near the breasts and the glutes (bottom) are often massaged through a towel.
Remember, you are in control so tell your therapist what you are and aren't comfortable with...
A massage should be sheer heaven!!
