Next week will be celebrating Independence Day on July 4. Yes, 232 years ago we declared independence from Great Britain. This got me thinking about different types of freedom, mostly of the George Michael kind, but also the freedom of first being able to wear makeup.
I had definitely experimented with Bonne Belle's Smackers in the Dr. Pepper flavor, but my first true makeup purchase was Cover Girl's Lipslicks. I can't remember which color I tried, but the packaging is bringing back memories of junior high.

OMG, black eyeliner, Wet N Wild. So embarassing! 99 cents!
1You and me both this was my first as well! OH I loved CG lipslicks I use to get whatever one that came in a yellow tube. It was one of the first gloss/sheer lipstick hybrids and it was under 4 bucks!
2I think the first make up I purchased was Maybelline mascara back in HS!!! (it used to be like $2.99 or $3.99) I didn't use make up until late Jr yr in HS - a little late compare to others
I still wear minimal make up since my skin breaks out
easily if I put on some foundation
3Oh no. I think I'm too old to remember! It was probably something either Maybelline or Cover Girl. Gonna have to think about this one.
4It was lipstick, which is very fitting since it's a makeup item I liked since I was really small. I didn't quite know how to pick colors though. I think the first color that I actually wore sometimes was a pinky brownish color. When I was really small I had Tinkerbell(?) stuff like the nail polish that would come off easily.
5I can't help but love neutrals on my eyes.
6i cant tag the product since its def been discontinued since then, but it was Jane foundation, a tiny little bottle in the wrong shade lol but my mom said i could only get a little thing so i dont spoil my face with makeup haha.. and this lipshine chapstick from avon, i think it was called liptint or something, it gave a little color so it was the coolest thing ever.. at least to an 11 year old lol..
7my first real real purchase was prob avon lipstick and eyeliner, and i still have my little empty bottles and tubes as a memory.. im a dork i know
8my first purchasess were def nail polish from claires. They came in minimal squarish bottles with black tops. I remember specifically a gun metal bluish one, which ended up falling on the floor in 7th grade homeroom and breaking... and got everywhere. Got into trouble for that one...
that was also the year i wore wayyy too much gap dream perfume....
9I got a bottle of purple Wet'n'Wild nail polish from my mom on my 8th birthday, but I think my first "real" makeup purchase was a horrible eyeshadow palette that featured navy blue, purple, matte white, silver, and one color I can't remember... also from Wet'n'Wild. And Jane cosmetics... I was really into them. Gah.
10I am SO loving all of these comments. It's so much fun to see what we all chose.
11I bought some Rimmell lipstick. It was this bright pink/fuchsia color. Terrible! My mom picked it out for me.
12My first real makeup purchase was when I was 14... Some cheap silver eyeshadow from New York Color.
13blue wet'n'wild nail polish! and a very strange shade of pink lipstick - also wet'n'wild.
14That's right.....I wanted "be a Pepper, too!"
15Love'Baby Soft Body Spray when I was 13 back in the '80's. I still wear it to this very day
16I think that my first real purchase was a Wet N Wild lippie in a dark red/black color. I guess I was going for the chola look.
No offense to any cholas...
17some of mine were lipslicks in a pink tube, covergirl powder compact, and the wet and wild eyeliner! needless to say ive expanded and upgraded my collection quite a bit since then, lol.
18Some of my first makeup that I can remember...were the gloss stick from CG pictured and their clean line. Mostly the clean powder. I loved flavored stuff like Bonne Bell, but I seldom bought it because I wanted the more "womanly" makeup. lol
19My first makeup purchase was a brown Jordana lipstick. Looked terrible on me but I didn't realize it at the time. All the girls used Jordana lipsticks in my Jr High in NYC. Then I moved to AZ and all the girls carried around CG compacts, which I then bought to fit in with everyone else. I could still remember how cool I felt whenever I whipped out that brown compact lol.
Fun Beauty Mark it Challenge Bella!
20That pic of CG Lipslicks bring back so many memories!
21first real purchase was clinque dual eyeshadow in ash violets, clinique lipgloss in tenderheart and blush in i dont remember what color
22The first serious makeup item I purchased was a Stila lipglaze in Guava! That really sparked my love of makeup.
23Oh, I DEFINITELY owned several of these LipSlicks! Bonne Bells were my first beauty obsession too, but I branched out into the world of CoverGirl and Maybelline as well.
One of the first beauty purchases I can remember was in the late 80s, I was in middle school, it was a red fan-shaped palette from Maybelline filled with brightly-colored shadows and blue mascara (which I still love to this day!) and blush. Loved it! Pretty sure they don't make it anymore though to beauty mark
24Oh, and those Maybelline Kissing Coolers lip glosses...they were swirled color lip balms that smelled like fruit...but really smelled horrible.
And I always loved Naturistics shiny roll-on gloss.
25Wow. I can't remember! I think it may have been a silver eyeliner (which I later used to mark fabric when I made my own clothes). I remember reading all the beauty magazines in my bedroom when I was younger and trying out different looks in the mirror (I still do that). It was fun.
Now I'm getting all nostalgic.
26CG lipslicks was definitely one of my first purchases and still remains to be a staple in my makeup case to this day. They actually make a purple-ish color that is kind of reminiscent of Clinique's Black Honey
27My first cosmetics purchase was a bright red lipstick from Wet n' Wild when I was 7. I've never been subtle, even then.
28I've also done almost everything else on this list, including the CG
lipslicks.
My first purchase was a Rimmel Lipstick. I was a tomboy in most of my high school years in Hong Kong, but then came to Canada to continue my education at grade 11. Everyone was wearing make up so I was pressure to buy something too.
I walked into the drugstore and this fabulous salesman skipped over and asked me in a bubbly manner if I needed assistance. I was looking at walls of lipsticks and was sweating bullets -- almost as if I were buying adult videos from a shady shack. I had no idea what to get and everything seemed so expensive and I had no idea that make up cost that much. He recommended a set of 12 mini-glosses, which was $12, and said it wasn't too expensive. Well it was for someone who didn't spend more than $8 a purchase that time.
I had no idea what to get, as I didn't know which color looked good on me. It was my first time looking at makeup, dammit. Cowered by the salesman's eager smile, trapped and frightened like a cornered critter under the fluorescent lights, I frantically searched the wall of lipsticks just so I can grab anything that was cheaper than his recommendation, just so I can "save face" and make a purchase so I don't get yelled at for wasting someone's time (happens too often in small stores in Hong Kong)
... "Asia"! That's it, the lipstick in Asia, I'll get that one, I said. Why such a choice, he asked, and I said, well, it's named Asia, so it must be suitable for Asian woman! His smile faded and looked at me as if I was a dork. Which I was.
But I got out of that terrifying and awkward experience, and hey, the lipstick wasn't half bad.
29Hilarious, I see I wasn't the only one who dove into 99 cent wet n wild eyeliner to experiment in makeup... haha my friend wore it to school and I was instantly jealous and HAD to try it myself... so I'd put it on at school so Mom wouldn't know haha
30HA!!!!!! Bella my first beauty product ever was CG Lipslicks too!!!!
31After that I graduated to Cover Girl Clean pressed powder......smelled like Noxema and I loved it
Cover girl clean pressed powder and maybelline mascara. With some Bonne Bell of course!
32Sweet Honesty fragrance from Avon - ordered with my stepmother when I was 12 or so.
33haha, i think my first beauty purchase was the CG Lipslicks too!
i remember it so well now... it was some sheer pink colour, and it had an AWFUL taste to it... and the cheap plastic cap was cracked, but i loved it and felt so grown up carrying it around for "touch-ups". lol.
this was closely followed by an array of wet'n'wild nail polishes in metallic blue, green, purple and a crapload of others.
oh how this takes me back... bonnebell was a definite staple too.
34My first beauty buy was CG Lipslicks too! I had it in a raspberry pink kind of colour, and I bought it because it was called "Daring". I saw it in my FIRST issue EVER of Seventeen (!!!) and Mandy Moore was on the cover with her short hair. There was a list of summer beauty tips, and one of them was to use this liptint to make your lips look like you just ate a popsicle.
35Not only that, but one of my most vivid preteen memories WAS that magazine. I remember going through this huge article they had about what to do to prepare yourself for going back to school. They had like, 90 tips or something! I felt so chic. ;D
The FIRSTS ever (which translates to high school haha) were my cherry-flavored, pink-tinted Nivea lip balm, a compact Maybelline blush (it had its own brush and I still remember the shade: Watermelon..haha
), and a Pigeon compact powder. We weren't
allowed to use make-up in school then (Catholic all-girls school haha) but when put together, it still looked 'natural' (somehow) on my face, which was good. haha
36True makeup? I'm pretty sure it was those lipslicks that you pointed out! The pinky brown color.
Any makeup? Had to have been lip smackers too.
37I used to make my mom give me the really bad bright pink gift with purchase lipsticks from Clinique or Estee Lauder. My first real purchase was something from Coty because they did a demonstration at Eckerds and I got free stuff if I bought something.
For shame! I just put on some LipSlicks. The really neutral pink color.
38Late bloomer here. I didn't buy anything for myself until late in HS... it was the clean n clear shine control invisible powder -- I would have flubbed and got the wrong color, and I knew it! lol
39My mom bought me navy blue kohl eyeliner and Maybelline Illegal Lengths mascara in jet black when I was about 12. I was completely mystified so she did my makeup for me for about 2 weeks until I got the hang of it. I vaguely remember a boy in my class asking me if I was goth. Hahaha...
40yeah Star54 I remember the taste was AWFUL as well! Oh memories...........
41I was a freshman in college, and the VERY FIRST makeup i owned was clear mascara and a brownish red lipstick... talk to me about funky!
I then proceeded on to peel of nail polish... so good!
but what's pretty funny was my mom's first makeup encounter, she thought artefill was like botox or something, and signed me up for it. i'm only 22 though... so not for me! anyone else have this problem?

42oh wait, i remember now... i also got green eyeshadow the color of frog skin. I thought it was awesome. ugh. what was i thinking?
43Some CoverGirl lipstick that was waaaaaaaay too dark for my coloring, but that I got because, you know, all my friends had it as well
I think I was 12 or 13.
44My mother was VERY into Mary Kay, so I def. had a nice collection of that stuff.
Creme to Powder Crap and Lip Gloss!
...UNTIL I discovered the fabulousity of MAC!
45is the best reading all

Speaking of our moms' stuff, my mom had this thing of talcum body powder with a big soft puff...to this day I don't understand what the purpose of that was.
(And she had it for years and never used it as far as I know. Maybe she didn't know what the hell it was for, either.)
47I remember I didn't start wearing makeup until my sophmore year of high school, and I started selling AVON so that was all I used. I know my first puchase was a set of eyeshadows with four different blues because that was my favorite color. Then, for like two years, I went crazy and bought every eyeshadow I could so that I could wear a different color every day (and I would wear a different pair of earrings every day which matched my makeup - I wore uniform so that's all I could do). Then, once I gradudated, I don't know - I grew out of it or something because I started only using foundation, powder, blush, eyeliner, and mascara. I barely even use lipgloss (I prefer chapstick or just some Vaseline), and I pretty much never use eyeshadow anymore, but I still have tons left over from my crazed phase...
48I bought some Mascara from CoverGirl.
