The heavy eyeliner trend isn't going away anytime soon. And why should it? A subtle cat eye (think Lauren Conrad, not Amy Winehouse) adds allure in a sexy, soft, slightly '60s sex-kittenish way.

I'll soon post a tutorial on how to create a foolproof cat-eye, but until then, I'll just tell you: Gel eyeliner is so much easier to master than liquid eyeliner. I'm a fan of MAC's Fluidline (as is, natch, makeup artist Victor Cembellin) because it lasts forever, and it's pretty much klutz-proof.
If you don't want to invest in the higher-end gel eyeliner options, there's Jane Be Pure Mineral gel liner ($6.99). This is a new product, and for the price, it's astonishingly good. The gel formula goes on as smoothly as versions by MAC and Bobbi Brown, and the staying power is excellent. (You'll need a hefty dose of makeup remover with this one!) Plus, it comes with an angled brush for application; while it's not quite as precise as my MAC #266 brush, it's not too shabby. Tell you what: If you've never played with gel eyeliner before, pick this up next time you're at the store. I'll work on the tutorial, and together, we'll be ready to unleash the pretty kitty inside you. Deal?

I love MAC's fluidlines, and I can't wait for your tutorial! I usually am pretty good with the cat-eye, but have issues with symmetry.
1I've never tried a check liner, I'll definitely have to check this out!
2Cool! I would love to try it for my wedding...(well before so I can practice and get it down right
3I absolutely HEART gel and cream liners. Ever since I started using Clinique's Brush-On Cream Liner (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P131518&searchString=clin...), I can't live without it. It goes on so smooth and stays on all day!
4I actually like the cat eye since various years ago but never manage to apply it right. Well, I can but it always only comes out right on one eye.
5I love the Clinique gel liners, so I'm sure I'd like this...I'll check it out next time I'm at the drugstore.
6i agree with the other girls...Clinique brush-on gel liner is amazing stuff! especially the "black honey" shade, which is a shimmery bronze. it's great for those with contacts and lasts forever.
7I've always wanted to try a gel liner but never wanted to invest in a good one in case I didn't like it. I've been doing the cat eye pretty frequently with a pencil and powder over it, and it looks fine at first but it gets smudgy and messy so fast!!
Where can you buy Jane products? I'm definitely trying this!
8Oh... it says drugstore... my bad.
9I've only ever tried Jane's pencils, but I love love love them. I'll definitely pick this up, I didn't even know about it.
10I'll have to keep this in mind. I've wanted to try a gel liner for a while.
11Wow, thanks for the info. I bought Bobbi Brown's Long Wear Gel liner, but have not tried it as I got the professional longer handled brush by accident which looks very difficult to master. I usually don't have even eyes either and don't have the patience to erase and redo it. Totally cannot wait for your tutorial and will definitely in the meantime start practicing with this one!
12I must say I have never played with gel eyeliner. I feel so neophyte!
I usually use the Smashbox cream eyeliners.
I will have to try out this Jane stuff.
13I sport cat eyes just about everyday. LOVE this 60's look to go along w/ my Lilly P. attire. I have found this is best achieved by using a slanted/arched eyeliner brush. Smashbox, Benefit, Studio Gear, Ulta, and even Sonia Kashuk for Target has a slanted eyeliner brush. This brush absolutely works the best for application. I find if you start by using the brush and making your 'wing' at the end of your eye first, you get better symmetry. Then, gradually moving towards your inner eye. The key is making your wing and then moving in as close to the lashes as you can (you can always build up more later). With more practice, it becomes like second nature.
14Example of the brush I'm talking about, the handle of the brush itself is slanted and not the bristles on the brush...

Sorry but MAC loves to push the MAC #266 brush and I've found you end up getting too much product on it to be able to work with it, especially for novices practicing cat eyes. To be honest, I've yet to encounter a MAC makeup artist who is skilled at the art of creating cat eyes. The MAC chicks in my area of FL spend more time coloring with eyeshadows in the MAC makeup practice coloring books. JMHO, of course.
15Dear Bella, I love you.
I spent the weekend checking
various brands to find cheap-ish gel liner, and there you go and post it!
16Thanks for the recommendation, I don't think I can find the brand in the UK but I'll ask my friends in the US§
Advah, we are psychic twins!
17I've never tried gel or cream eyeliner. I am so addicted to liquid eyeliner it's not even funny. For some reason, I think gel/cream eyeliner would be harder to master than liquid, but everyone's different.
18I currently use L'Oreal's HIP gel liner but wasn't going to repurchase ever since I found out the brand tests on animals. Hopefully Jane doesn't, so I can try this one next. Thanks Bella!
19has anyone tried the sheseido cream eyeliner??
20its simply THE best! i looove LOOVE it
the price is a lil pricey ($25)
but i promise you its SOO worth it.
I threw out all my liquid liners since they were old. Very good reason to try the gel and inexpensive Jane liner sounds perfect to start with. Never tried the cat eye look but would love to. My boyfriend complains I don't wear makeup for him! Well, bring on the tutorial so I can do it up.
21oH! Bella, can't wait
22for the tutorial, i love
cat eyes, but i always
get really frustrated,
and it end being a mess..
Ohhh I just got a new liquid liner, but for 6.99 I'm going to add this one to the mix too!
LOVEEEEEEEEE IT!
23Hurray for gel eyeliners! I have thrown/given away all my pencils since I started using Fluidlines a year ago, and have never looked back. Better control, better color payoff, easier on delicate eyelid skin - what's not to love?
Must try out the Jane.
24Bella - I was just looking at this when I was at Walgreens yesterday! I did the whole "should I, shouldn't I" dance and then put it back...now I will definately go pick some up and wait with bated breath for your tutorial!!!
25Can't wait! I have the worse time perfecting the under eye step of heavy eyeliner.
26oooh, I have to go to Walgreens now...
27I've only done a nice set of cat eyes once using liquid liner. If I was in Canada I'd totally pick this up to try it out, but alas I don't think they sell Jane in the UK.
28Loreal's HIP Pigment Cream Eyeliner is awesome too! It's about $12 last I remember, but it comes in some amazing colors. I have it in Eggplant, and wow does it make my eyes pop, more so than black ever does. Honestly, I like it better than MAC. And there is a nice amount in the container, so you don't have to run back to the drugstore often. It comes with an angled brush as well.
29i'll try this the next time i run out of bobbi brown gel liner, or actually when i want a new color...cuz that stuff lasts forever!
