After falling in love with Cover Girl Lash Blast, I was hoping for a renaissance in drugstore mascaras. Enter Maybelline The Colossal ($7.49), whose metallic yellow tube and purple lettering is about as subtle as the nuanced wit of Pauly Shore.
The Colossal seems to be Maybelline's answer to DiorShow mascara, promising to lend nine times the volume to your lashes. I'm not sure how one would measure that (tiny calipers?), but the wand is definitely fatter and bigger than most — so at least we know one thing is more voluminous. Maybelline also touts its formula, which contains collagen. But don't get too excited: It's the fourth-to-last ingredient, and since your body can't absorb collagen topically, it's really more for show.
As for the mascara itself, one coat definitely made my lashes stand out more. I wish the brush separated and defined them better, and I wasn't thrilled about the flakes that settled underneath my eyes after a few hours. With a lash curler, this mascara is quite good; without, it's only a little better than average. That's not a bad thing at all, but don't expect jaw-dropping results from this one.

Thanks so much for this review, Bella. You just saved me almost 2 tanks of gas
As
far as I'm concerned clumpy and flakey are very bad words. This one's a no-go.
1I've tried the regular volume express mascara from Maybelline and I wasn't thrilled by it, it was okay, but nothing spectacular, so I doubt I'll be buying this one anytime soon.
2I actually just bought this mascara last week, and I do agree that its not the best out there....but I must say that I found the smell (sounds strange, I know!) less "offense" than some mascaras. I think Dior Show Mascara has a very man-made, almost plastic smell to it, while The Colossal Volume mascara is more floral smelling.
3I'm so glad you reviewed this mascara. I saw the commercial for the first time last night and immediately wondered if you'd tried it and would be providing feedback. Think I'll stick with Lash Blast! Thanks, Bella.
4Yeah, how DO they measure "nine times the lashes"? Sounds like I will pass on this one. Thanks for an informative review that made me chuckle this morning.
5I am a n00b with Mascara, I usually go through my days fine without it as my face revolves around my winged eye liner... but i wouldn't mind NOT having to wear fake lashes on my special outtings. Any suggestions for the best liner for me?
6I saw this at CVS, but I passed on it...I like my Great Lash.
7Great review! Doesnt seem worth buying. I just started using lash blast and its been ok..gets a little clumpy at times and its difficult to apply on my bottom lashes. Cover girls lash exact has probably been the best so far.
8Really? I just bought this mascara and I love it. I was a Diorshow snob but I fell in love with the color of the packaging so I tried it while I was vacationing in Vancouver. I love and my credit card loves it as well.
9I reviewed this for my blog per request, and I got the same results as Bella. I'm going back to Full N Soft and Lash Discovery.
10Good to know, I'm always interested in trying new mascaras...
11I'll pass, I hate little flakes under the eyes.
12i noticed the smell of it, too! i'm usually all about full, lush lashes so i bought this mascara. but i don't really like it. even Great Lash gives a better look, in my opinion. stick with the classic, ladies!!
13Bummer at the flakes. I've yet the find the perfect mascara that isn't as expensive as Diorshow
14I think it's fine, no miracle product, but the fragrance made my eyes burn. I have really sensitive eyes/sinuses and I kept smelling the flonase fragrance.
15I'll pass on this mascara. I also hate the name, seriously has to be one of the worst names for a masacra.
I will stick with my DiorShow, CG Lash Blast, CG Lash Exact and BE Weather Everything.
16I just can't seem to work with the really big and fat brushes.
17i just bought this and it seemed to work pretty well. no clumps or flaking for me! but, my maybelline full n soft seems to do just as well as this one!
18Great review! but i simply didn't like it. I found it rather clumpy and stinktastic.. Imma loyal BAD GAL wearer!
19The fact that it flakes after a few hours makes it a pass for me. I would have given it a lower star rating by the sounds of your review.
20Thanks for the review. Flakes are not good for my contacts. I'll stick with my usual Maybelline.
21I almost picked this up but decided to pass. I can't stand flakes under my eyes so I'm glad I did. I'll still with Lash Blast or Rimmel Lash Extender.
22I bought into the hype and gave it a try but wasn't impressed. I'll stick with my CG LashBlast
23I actually think that this mascara is mucho better than lashblast. It does an amazing job of making my eyes pop with drama than lashblast and I've gotten many compliments on it!
Lashblast looks more "natural."
24And it's cheaper too, haha. But only by like a dollar. I would totally recommend this to anyone! I just don't like the smell, but it gets addictive after a while of sniffing it . . .lol.
I find that Maybelline's mascaras are always to wet for my lashes, I always make a mess when trying to apply them.
25I just purchased this Colossal Mascara at Walmart for $5.98, and I believe it works much better then the CoverGirl Lashblast, Prescriptives False Eyelashes, Great Lash, etc. I am very impressed at the legnth of my lashes after one coat. It doesn't clump either, and it separates your lashes. I think you should all try this product. I read the reviews, and I still tried it and I am highly impressed with the results.
26I absolutely love this mascara. It didn't flake on my or smudge. And my eyelashes look extremely thick and long. I've been getting compliments all week about my mascara and eye lashes. I would definately give it a try at least. And you do only need 1 swoop and it's on...
27I really like this mascara. The bigger the brush, the better, in my opinion.
28I'm a HUGE fan of Maybelline Mascara -- they're amazing -- but this one isn't my favorite at all. The brush it almost too big and the *key* to getting the volume: Go from the root and S-L-O-W-L-Y drag the brush upward -- wow, what a difference!!
29i think its a fab mascara and dries quickly so its smudge free.lasts all night llong so no applying extra needed.you may need to curl eyelashes before applying
30I was about to buy this but thanks for the info, I won't be buying it anymore. Although I did notice a lot of ppl tend to like CG Lash Blast. I've used Lash Blast but I didn't really like it, especially the Panda eyes I get from it.
