It's hard to look as chic as a celebrity when you step off an airplane, especially when you land in Hawaii with a scarf and boots on (yeah, I've done it).
The recycled, dry cabin air can cause parched skin and hair. An article last year in Environmental Science & Technology suggests that "interactions between body oils and ozone found in airplane cabins could lead to the formation of chemical byproducts that might worsen nasal irritation, headaches, dry eyes and lips, and other common air traveler complaints." Yikes. Wide-body planes have ozone-neutralizing catalysts in their ventilation systems, but narrower aircrafts often don't. To find out how to stay beautiful when flying the friendly skies, just read more.
- Use a leave-in conditioner and pull hair back in a simple low twist. Your hair will stay soft, hydrated and out of your way during the flight. Wear a headband (but not a tight one) or pin back bangs.
- Wash your face and apply a lotion with SPF — you can still get a sunburn on an airplane. Wear as little makeup as possible.
- Pack an anti-bacterial hand lotion, like the ones from Bath & Body Works. You'll keep germs away while moisturizing your hands and nails.
- Relax. I swear by Origins Peace of Mind On-the-Spot Relief, an aromatherapy product you dab onto your temples to relieve stress. It also obliterates the smell of overcooked chicken, drunk passengers and airplane bathrooms.
- Drink a lot of water and bring along a water spray, like Evian Travel Trio.
- Bring an eye mask and earplugs. After all, you need your beauty sleep!

This is wonderful, thank you
1Problem is the very little liquids in the plane...
2I think the eye shade is key.
3Great suggestions!!
4I always look (and feel!) like a disaster after a long flight. I get kind of scared that they'll think I'm a terrorist because my skin looks so awful and I look kind of diabolical...
5I travel almost weekly for work. Some things that I swear by:
1. Noise cancelling headphones by Shure. They work like ear plugs, so it blocks out noise, but you also get to listen to music
2. lip balm is key for dry lips. It's essential!!
3. Buy a bottle of water in the airport before boarding. The airlines are stingy with water service, and if its a long flight - they never come by during the sleep hours
4. Eye drops!! It's very important to not wear eye makeup - however I carry eye liner for when I land to freshen up.
5. The bath & body works anti bacterial lotion is very very nice
6. MINTS or GUM. This is necessary in case you end up sitting next to someone who likes to chat. You sit very close, and gum totally saves me each time!!
6for some reason i get really bloated on trips. when i book my ticket i order the vegetarian or low fat food option (yeah you can actually ask for that kinda stuff- try it!) and i pick at the fruit and veggies...skip the wine and drink lots of water!
7If you're going to a warm state (like Florida), you might want to bring a change of clothes on the plane. When I went there for spring break with my choir in high school, it was cold, foggy and wet in Illinois. I was in jeans, long sleeve shirt and a jacket! I managed to stuff the jacket in my luggage, but I was still warm after landing in Florida at eleven PM!
Here's a few other tips (along with the one I mentioned):
1. Bring a change of clothes if you know you're going to a place warmer/cooler than where you're flying from (ex. Illinois to Florida)
2. Take some pain medication if you're prone to headaches, backaches, etcetera. I can't tell you how much I regretted not taking some before I went on. My neck and my head were killing me.
3. If you're one to freak out on planes, bring your iPod or some other music. You can't really listen to it during take-off but it'll help you relax before and during your flight.
4. Buy food and a water/soda bottle from a shop in the airport before boarding. It's infinitely cheaper and you know you have food you like.
5. Lip balm is essential.
6. A good book helps calm your nerves and keeps pesky neighbors far away.
7. Gum is your best friend, especially when air pressure changes in the cabin and your ears start popping.
8. To go with #2, if you need to take medication, take it before the flight. It can be messy trying to hunt for your pills when you have little room to dig into your carry-on on a plane.
8I coined the term "airplane pimples" because I swear if you have even a hint of a zit before getting on a flight, but the time you land it'll be a ginormous whitehead. Being on a plane accelerates the growing process...I hate that!
9My airplane travel must haves/dos:
Tinted moisturizer
10Lip balm
Gum
A good book
Water
Body Shop Vitamin C Energizing Face Spritz - but I put it in a tiny spritz bottle (from dollar store).
Great tips, Bella!
11this is useful since i fly often...thanks bella!
12I travel a ton for work and unfortunately most of these flights tend to by 10 hours+
For those long flights, I always pack
1. Ear plugs. What a lifesaver.
2. Big bottle of water purchased before boarding (sometimes two depending the flight duration)--you can never stay hydrated on those flights.
3. A couple of granola or Luna bars. Breakfasts are always some buttery croissant or over sugared yogurt. I prefer these instead.
4. Eye masks. Samsonite makes a great one that curves out over your eyes blocking light, but smooshing your eyes which I find irritating.
5. Mints, mints, mints. And if someone can find a way to politely insist on the guy next to me taking them as well, your suggestion is warmly welcome
6. A journal. I find that writing is actually more relaxing than reading.
7. A plan! I always take a look at the in-flight magazine as soon as I board. I plan exactly which movies I want to watch and when I will sleep. I find that doing this actually makes the flight go by faster and ensures that I get plenty of shut eye.
8. Layered clotes. Generally, I'll wear jeans, a tank top and a wrap sweater that feels more like a blanket than a sweater. It does double duty and allows me to avoid those nasty in-flights blankets.
9. Wrap. Just in case the sweater is not enough.
10. An emergency pack of skin care/make-up. 15 minutes before landing, I crack out the Body Shop's tea tree oil wipes, a tinted moisturizer, lip gloss, blush and quick swipe of mascara to look fresh and awake upon landing.
Buon viaggio a tutti!
13I feel sick when reading in planes/cars so I use audiobooks on itunes...for anyone out there who has a similar problem =)
14Gerat idead Bella and everyone else - I am going on my honeymoon soon, so I'll def be using some of these tips. Happy flying everyone
