Even if you went to Comic Con and have a lifetime obsession with J-Pop, you'll probably still do a double-take at these contact lenses.
These "extra-wide" versions mimic the large-eyed look of anime heroines such as Sailor Moon, and they're becoming a trend in parts of Asia. A Korean company, DueBa, manufactures many of them, which sell for about $50 per pair.
Is offering a temporary, non-invasive way to achieve an unrealistic beauty ideal a good thing or a bad thing? Tell me what you think in the comments.

Giant eyes is never a good thing. That's the type of thing that freaks people out.
1They're kind of creepy, imo. But I have to say, it is a much better idea to spend $50 on a pair on contacts than to get expensive eye surgery. It's less permanent and more cost-efficient.
2Unless you lose your contacts in the pool regularly like my mom! haha, forgot to add that
3I think it's cute. I would rock them!
4so cute I totally would.
5I love it!
6These are creepy but it is a lot better than surgically altering your appearance.
7IMO,colored contacts do not look appropriate on Asians. They look freakish and unnatural.
8cute and weird.
9I think these could be fun at night
10No way! It looks like there is something wrong with her. I personally think she looks like something out of "The Grudge".
11I personally think they're a little weird & creepy. They are a lot better than surgically & permanently altering your appearance, though.
12Seems to me you're splitting hairs on a beauty site. One of the first kinds of "makeup" was using belladonna to make one's pupils dilate (a generally accepted ideal of beauty). I've always wanted darker eyes, and I think bigger irises falls well within that category of minor enhancements.
13Oh, sorry, here's the wikipedia link I meant to include:

I think they're creepy. No thanks.
15Asian women have such delicate and exquisite features. Why bastardize such a thing of beauty?!
16My eyes are like this naturally. I get told that I look like an Anime character or a precocious child.
17I still don't understand how they make your eyes look huge.
18thats terrifying.
19That's pretty freaky .. definitely NOT meant for everyone! lol
20Oh, those are creepy in the cutest and best way!
21As an asian I would love to have some.
Unfortunately, they don't take orders for astigmatism D:
MY FRIEND AND I WERE JUST DISCUSSING HOW WE WANT TO BE SAILOR MOON & COMPANY FOR HALLOWEEN. THAT IS SO IRONIC. WE REALLY NEED THESE.
22I just got back from the optometrist; she said she's had a few people request them, but they're not available in the States.
23one word .... scary!
24darn. well i hope they become available soon! i really want to order them
25In way it's like dying your hair blond or going to a tanning bed, their just following the beauty ideal of their society, but that doesn't make it right either...
26I find the look very creepy. Bug eyes are never cute.
27I love anime, so I think they're cute.
28...The very same reason why people with monolids get plastic surgery to achieve the double eyelid look. You can't wear contact lenses forever, you know. I wholeheartedly agree with Dublin's statement
29By the way, I am an Asian woman, and I'm not trying to be racist by any means.
i've always wanted to rock out a pair of super cute colored contacts!! (oh and yes i'm asian i'd totally do it!)
30i would love to get these! i was on a forum before, they were talking about these. they said it wouldn't be good to wear for a long time because it really dries out your eyes.
31How do they work exactly? I think they're weird looking.
32I like them, in a weird sort of way! I think they could draw attention for being unusual or striking, not anime-style.
33Is it scary that I think my actual contacts are that big?
34so cute & fun! love them, want them!
35Really really really creepy. I would not pay $50 for these!
36these are really unattractive.
37I actually wear these (and yes I am asian with a "monolid" as another user referred to it above) and have been wearing them for about a year and half. These contacts are different from others in the way that they have a black circle rim around the coloured iris. (For the "biggest" eye effect, the black circle encompasses a black iris.) It definitely does make my eyes look bigger... can't really explain how, and some can also make your eyes look like they're watery/shining and glistening.
I heard from my sister (who studied psych in post secondary) that they did a study once on people and how they perceived beauty and there were two pictures of a girl- same girl, same clothes and hair, posture.. etc. but for some reason they found one picture more beautiful than the other. It turned out that in that picture, her pupils were doctored (with photoshop) to have a diamter that was 1mm greater. Such a slight change can make such a big difference! I think that's the reasoning behind these contacts.
Oh yeah, and definitely, the most natural colours are brown and black (if you're asian). And like many above have said- it's better than surgery.
38Each to their own really, I've always been a fan of coloured contacts (but I cant use them unfortunately) just cause they look cool, but if someone wants to do it its their choice. bit like tattoos and piercings, its your body go for it!
39*cough* Why do you people always feel the need to connect Asian people and anime characters together? People who want these contacts don't necessarily want to look like a freaking animated character.
That being said, I don't think the chick above looks freaky at all. I think she's terribly pretty. And her eyes would still probably be pretty big without those contacts so you guys are calling her freaking looking straight on. But on the other hand, if you guys dunno, Asians are notorious for super-Shopped pictures. This girl's eyes may not be as big and "freaky" as y'all think *shrugs*
Just throwing some ideas out there.
And "unrealistic beauty ideals"? We just want slightly bigger, and shinier eyes. Whatever. Let us be.
40Weird!!
41Don't get how and why a woman would like to look like a manga!!!
I have some contact lenses which I wear that enhance/ make your pupils look larger, and hence give the overall impression of bigger eyes (please refer to my teamsugar blog posts for some of these looks), they are by Acuvue Define , and are much more natural and easy-wearing than the green, bug like ones shown.
42Most girls that wear these kinda contact lenses in china has yellow spots on the white of there eyes after months of use...
Anyways most girls i've met fall for those low quality contacts just to make them look cool and after end up having real bad eye sight!
[Really not a good idea, some girls in china take it too far (i know i live there),it starts with this just for an attitude, you die your hair and then your showing your self in a bra..]
43The reason for these lenses are not necessarily to look like an anime character. Its main point is to look younger. Babies, because their eyes are not fully grown or "stretched", have more iris than whites in their eyes. The contact lenses give Asian girls (some of which have small irises and lots of white around their eyes, seen as a bad look in some Asian countries like China) the illusion of being youthful, for them to emulate the vulnerability (a trait associated with being feminine) and lovableness of children. It's make up taken to the next step.
In Asia, we realize not everyone can be beautiful, in the sense of having refined cheekbones, tall nose and perfect almond-shaped "phoenix" eyes. But while not everyone can look beautiful, they can certainly look cute and precious. It supposedly gets you as much attention from men, but it elicits the feeling of the need in men to protect the vulnerable fair maiden, instead of a feeling of coveting a goddess. Cuteness also seems less haughty and more approachable, as it is a product of habits--of years of training and effort in make up and behaviours -- as oppose to model-like beauty, which is something you win in the birth lottery. And being a less intimidating and almost just as appealing alternative, many Asian women have latched on to the ideal of being cute.
44I don't know why... but I am fascinated by these, too, and would love to try them out.
I'm not Asian - and actually have pretty big eyes naturally - but it would be neat to see how it would change my appearance. I like what it does in the before and after's I've seen online... Wow.
45so freaking cute. not as a permanent thing, but I would definitely wear them every so often
46Is offering a temporary, non-invasive way to achieve an unrealistic beauty ideal a good thing or a bad thing?
47Is that not what the make up/cosmetic industry is about. How is this different from coloring your hair, wearing hair extensions, pushup bras?
They look pretty fake to me. My eyes are small but I would not wear them.
I am a huge anime freak and would love to have a pair!...so cute!
48I'm with Jude, how exactly do they make your eyes look wider? Because if you happen to have narrow eyes... then not all of the iris will be visible if you're wearing these lenses. So what's the point?
49No thank you, not today or ever.
