How-To: Get Every Last Bit From Your Beauty Products

Sick of paying big bucks to replace your favorite lotions and gels? There's a way to hold off a little longer. You might think you're already getting most of the good stuff out of the container, but there's often much more hiding within. (Case in point: Urban Decay Primer Potion.)

Fortunately, PartySugar shared how she squeezes a few extra uses out of her favorite hair gel when it's running low. It's really easy to do, and you'll get your money's worth. To see how it's done, just grab a plastic tube of your favorite product, then read more.

Step one: You'll need the tube and scissors for this project. Squeeze the product as close to the opening as you can, then cut the tube in half. Use your finger or a tool to remove the extra product from the top half of the tube. Place the product in the bottom half.

Step two: Pinch the bottom half and slip it inside the larger half, as shown. You'll still be able to squeeze the product out a few more times before returning to the store for a replacement.

Keep in mind... if you're doing this to a serum, once that product is exposed to the air, it loses effectiveness. This is why serums are never served in jars.

I find rolling down the tube and clipping it the best way to keep it from drying out, once cut.

I've done this for years. But...I have a horror story. Be careful how you hold the tube as you're cutting it!! I was trying to get the last little bit out of a tube of facewash in the shower one morning and was holding the top half of the tube in between my index and middle fingers and the bottom half with my thumb. As I was cutting the tube I cut into the palm of my hand with the scissors!! Tons of blood and five stitches later I am much more careful with scissors!!!

That is incredible how much was layered on the sides.

I agree about watching your knife, that's the first thing I was thinking about, especially with something that would move around.

For tubes, those slide on plastic deals that you get from your dentist would probably work well, if they're wide enough.

I had a problem with a Lancome eye serum dispenser not dispensing. I tried twisting the top off and that didn't work. I couldn't believe that I'd managed to run out already. I kept at it though, and after a couple days, it finally started pumping again and it's been fine since. I'll have to try cutting it open when the time comes.

I totally do that with toothpaste.

    For creams/lotions --
if you're REALLY low.. you can put a few drops of water in the tube (before you cut it)..

    • Apply body oil (baby oil/whatever) (before drying off,
    • towel dry
    • then apply the watered down lotion
    • and some fragrance.

THANK YOU - i always want to find ways to get that last bit out of my tubes of whatever - and well...it's sad when you know that there's more and you can't do anything about it. it's like that with the shampoo and conditioner bottles. i know that i can fill them with a bit of water and i can get another wash, but with makeup and other products, it's a bit harder. now i'm going to try this and pray that it works!

I know this is an old post, but I'd still like to say thanks. I have no idea why I never thought of this...it's so simple, but it never crossed my mind. Now I do it all the time and feel ever-so-crafty.
