OK, no matter what you think about Gwen Stefani's tendency to fetishize anything and everything Asian, you've gotta admit: Her new perfume bottles are pret-ty darn 可愛い — that's kawaii, which is Japanese for "cute." The quintet comprises the Harajuku Lovers fragrance collection — more details here — and the scents are aimed toward a younger crowd than her first scent, L.
But how do these scents smell? Are you sure you really want to know? If so, read more.
The Harajuku Lovers perfumes ($25–$45) are trickling into stores, and the adorable packaging draws shoppers. Last night I went to Nordstrom to check them out, and a Gwen fan decked out in Harajuku Lovers clothing — we'll call her Megafan — was giddily spritzing her way through the fragrances. I began by sniffing the bottles, and after a few seconds of enduring each fruity-floral mess, I couldn't help but blurt, "I'm sorry, but these are not good."
I thought Megafan was gonna cut me, but to my surprise, she agreed. "Yeah," she said disappointedly. "I'm surprised that they're this bad. I liked her first fragrance, but this is a letdown." We went on sniffing, and then we bravely tried them on our skin. At first spritz, each gave off a burst of alcohol; when the juice landed on my wrist, it made a small scratch sting and burn. "All I smell is alcohol," Meganfan said with a frown.
She's right: These start with a shout of alcohol, then finish with a whisper of actual fragrance. Of the five, Love and Music are the most engaging. The former is a pleasant (if unremarkable) soft floral tempered with vanilla and musk, and the latter is a slightly fruitier take on the same formula. They aren't must-tries in my book, and as for the others? The coconut in G has the grace and subtlety of, well, a coconut dropping on your head. And while the "lollipop accord" of Lil' Angel does indeed mimic candy, who wants to smell like a Jolly Rancher? I could not bring myself to try Baby on my skin, but Megafan declared it the worst of the bunch.
Look, it's clear that these fragrances are meant for a younger consumer; they don't take many risks, they're overly sweet, and the packaging is begging to be placed on a 14-year-old's dresser. But considering how L opened up nicely, it's surprising that these scents hit the skin with a thud. Apparently I wasn't the only one left disappointed; Megafan sadly looked at the cute bottles one last time before throwing her spritzed paper blotters in the trash and walking away.

Sorry...I don't find these cute at all, even in a kitschy way.
1I think they're kind of cute!
2I think they're cute but I wouldn't waste my money on something that doesn't smell good. I'll pass.
3Cute for a 10 year old, but I don't see how anyone above 21 could buy these. That is a trend in those countries, dressing very young and loving anything cartoonish or childish. It would drive me nuts. lol
4Adorable!!
5The legs are too far apart though, they're not normal. lol
I think the bottle heads are kind of cute, but I would only put something like this on my dresser if it also smelled awesome.
6I think my 13 year old sister would LOVE these and i might consider buying this for her as a xmas present but for an adult??? nope
7these are way too cute. I just want them for display haha
8I WANT!
9how cute is that. I wouldn't mind buying it if i wasn't broke as hell.
10i gravitated towards those cute bottles in nordstrom perfume counter.... i wanted so bad to like the "Love" scent but just couldn't do it.... i wanted to love "LOVE" b/c i just adore the bottle!!! but i'll take my $25 for a mini bottle elsewhere
11I really like Gwen's style but the whole Harajuku girls thing has always bothered me.
12I don't how the fragrance smells but I think the bottles are cute.
13The bottles are really cute, but I'm not into that enough to buy it. Maybe for my sister (but I'd have to warn her not to actually use the fragrance)!
14The bottles are cute, but they aren't worth the price if they don't smell that good.
15umm that's definitely Chinese, not Japanese...
16The bottles are super cute! They look like kokeshi dolls, which are something even grown-ups collect. I guess I'll have to check the scents out when they get here.
17Awwe, these bottles are adorable. I'll have to see how bad the fragrances are for myself though...
@burntpineapple: The first two characters can be either Chinese or Japanese kanji. The last character is definitely Japanese though. So overall, this is Japanese.
And I don't think there's anything wrong with a grown woman liking cute things. I should just speak for myself though, I'm only 18 *shrugs*
18Oh deary, I think it's time Ms Steffani found herself a new gimmick. The Japanese thing has gotten really tired.
19She's done the West Indian thing, now she's worn out all things cute and Japanese. What's next???
The bottles are cute and I'm going to smell this weekend and possibly buy.
20The bottles are cute but if it doesn't smell good then it's not worth my time.
21Love the link to the MadTV skit. Bobby Lee is hilarious.

23so cute!
24I'm a 30-year old Gwen fan and I think the bottles are pretty cute, especially for hardcore Gwen & L.A.M.B. collectors (which I'm not, actually). As far as the scents, I smelled them all and the only one I liked enough to buy was G, the coconut-scented one; I don't think it's a strong scent at all and my boyfriend thinks it smells great. To anyone who hasn't smelled them for yourself, give them a try. You might like at least one out of the five, and they're pretty cheap!
25Gwen is a cool person, but I have to say that she doesn't seem to be the best at fragancemaking. And to charge alot of money for something that only looks good, but not smell good is bogus. I can see little girls liking this collection, but little girls are incredibly simple. As for her fragrance L, I think it smells okay, but not distinctive in any way, it doesn't excite my nose. It's safe, and safe can be boring. I think the trick to fragrancemaking is to compose a scent that's both unique, and wearable. You should really consider what notes smell good together, or would smell good together, and be selective about the order in which you comprise the notes.
26I think all the haters talking crap about the dolls are nuts... they are adorable and reasonably priced... i bought baby tonight and will be going back to buy one every payday for the next two months.. im going to have the whole collection and then im going to buy the mini dolls too... and they are gonna look bomb on a shelf in my room... to each there own.. your trash is my tresure and its your freakin loss!!
27Omg i hav 1 of these and it looks and smells amazing!! It certainly glams up my dressing table!! It took me ages to take my pick because they all smell amazing!! Defo reccomend!! x
28I think these fragrances smell great, they are very different an they dont have the same smell like most perfumes do...my opinion would be that if you are up for something that smells different then these are good
29you are right fashionista444..it is hard to pick because they are all great
30you are right fashionista444..it is hard to pick because they are all great

32I think everyone varies in the smell department. I don't like overwelming perfume the ones you can smell coming down the hall. I tried these scents out and they are not as bad as the article made them out to be. Okay so the packaging is a bit much. But oh well? right? Anyway I like the "Baby" scent because it smells clean and powderish but not overwelmingly so. I also like "G" because it's tropical. I've gotten nothing but compliments when I wear these scents. I guess it's cuz I don't spray five plus sprays on me. Love and Music are also good scents too! But the fifth one I'd stay away from it's not good. I'd say give them a try it's better than some of the other scents out there.
33my friend has them and they are so cute and smell great and i think they can be for any age level its not always about he bottle but the smell to and once again they smell beautiful
34THIS SMELLS SO FREAKIN GOOD! i love it soo sooo much im buying all of them!!! THIS PERFUME ROX!!! buy it!
35It smells sooo good i love it and my man does to he always makes sure i have some on
36Just like u wudnt judge a bokk by its cover, dont judge these! Out of all of them ,"G" is sincerely the best. I luv the way it smells.. its truly unique. Dont let others judge 4 u, smell/try them urself!
37I absolutely love The Harajuku Lovers 'Music'. I don't go out without having any of it on my body.
