Black lipstick: It's not just for goths anymore. This stark look showed up on the Yves Saint Laurent runway, and if cosmetics companies have their way, you'll be craving inky color for fall.
But can I level with you? Even though this is the hot trend, I just can't see this looking good in real life. I like Joy Division just as much as the next girl, but I fear this look would make me look like an overgrown Avril Lavigne groupie.
And yet, it's big for Fall, so I'd be a bad Bella for not keeping you in the trend-spotting loop. I report, you decide! If you're braver than I am and want some ways to try this trend, read more.
To take a baby step on the dark side: Try Bobbi Brown Shimmer Lip Gloss ($20) in Black Pearl. I know what you're thinking: Gothic lips from the queen of neutrals? Believe it. This moody mauve has tons of shine with dark pearl accents, but it's not as in-your-face as other options.
If you have to get the hyped-up shade: Everyone's all abuzz over Lancome's forthcoming lip color set, which is inspired by a pair of Louboutins. The $48 set includes a red lipstick and sparkling lip gloss in Piha Black. If this sounds like your dream come true, you can get on the waiting list by calling Bloomingdale's at (212) 705-2886.
For black on a budget: Manic Panic Raven Black Lipstick ($6.95) is a matte shade, and if you're OK with shopping at a place called Vampfangs.com, have at it. Layer clear lip gloss on top to channel your inner Elvira.
For the real thing: Just like on the runways, YSL Beauté Pur Black gloss ($28) is all shine and no sparkle. It's like latex for your lips, and it's definitely not for wallflowers — so again, hop on the waiting list if you want a couture-approved smile.

it does look awesome on the runway but i dont think i'd be confident enough to wear it in everyday life.. i think i'd be constantly wondering what people were thinking haha insecure, i know..
1I think it's a beautifully dramatic look for the runway and advertisements, but I just don't think it works well with the everyday. It's quite tough to pull off without looking goth. I'd rather go with a dark violet or something If I was going to wear a dark lipstick on a night out.
2I know I can't pull that off. I'm already Black!
3Do not like it.
4I tried black lipstick for a costume party once back in high school, and when I came home my mom told me I looked like I had liver disease. Soooo yeah, not jumping on that bandwagon.
5I used to wear black lipstick a lot. It takes a lot of care and maintenance. Especially the cheaper brands.
You gotta constantly reapply it and make sure it's not running or smudging all over the joint.
6It looks edgy for the runway. This reminds me of the time when people use to take black eyeliner and put it all around their lips like it was cute. Black lips are too edgy unless you are goth
7Yikes!
8I'm super super pale, so it'd just make me look even more dead...but I'd do a dark wine color.
9it reminds me of that scene in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, when there's that flash of Laura Palmer being possessed, and she's got black lips.
i'm going to go ahead and put this under the "not for me" column.
10I don't wear black lipstick even when I'm in a goth outfit. IMO it's really difficult to pull off unless you have an exceptionally beautiful and balanced mouth shape. It makes thin lips look thinner, full lips fuller, a wide mouth wider, and so on. Some of this can be addressed by creative lining but I think it's very unflattering on most people's natural lip shapes.
11I rocked this look back in high school and that was a looong time ago. I'm too old to pull it off now!
12I'm sorry this is not cute in real life.....Runway, the cover of a magazine...yes, but going to a party and seeing someone with black lips is a mess!
13They can push it all they want, it's not a look that translates well off the runway to real life. It's definitely not a colour that I would wear unless it was Halloween.
14being a ex-goth girl (the first time around, in 1980-85), I didn't like black lipstick then and i like it less now all shiny and plastic looking. Great for runway but not for reality. The Lancome duo of red with black gloss is interesting and I'd like to see that in person, but I wouldn't wear it myself. I'll stick to my vampy Russian Red or Ruby Woo, thank's very much
15Def couldn't see this working in real life. Even worse if it smudged!
16um, NO.. i'd feel like i have squid ink all over my lips O_O
17No way...I'll save this look for the junior high students that I teach.
18It looks wonderful on the models though.
19Very artsy. I could see it in a magazine or on the runway but like a lot of runway fashion, you can never *actually* pull it off in real life. Pass!
20lol, just got a mental image if my hubby with black lipstick smeared on his lips! He hates kissing me when I'm just wearing lip gloss!
21I concur with other posters: black lipstick is great on the runway and maybe on Halloween but not for everyday (or even every night) use.
22Not on my lips, not gonna happen. I think it very unattractive.
23I have to admit when I first saw the YSL I thought I needed it. It's so black and shiny, like leather. It caught my attention and looks soooo good on the model. I know I can't get it though. It looks great on the runway and in fashion ads, but it just won't work for real life. I'm so pale anyway so I would look dead. Plus the fact that my personality is so not edgy or goth or punk, so people would literally laugh in my face if I tried this.
24no
25Sickening!!!! Never in a million years!!
26I have black lipstick for halloween, and I actually like the way it
27shows off the shape of my lips. It's too much for every day, though.
I'm skipping the black lips (yes, I'm not even trying it), I like dark berrie and brown lips for this winter, and I'll wear that, but this black is way too black for my daily life. And like psterling, my boyfriend wouldn't come close to me if I did wear it.
28I love it on the runway but I just can't ever see this in real life...
29I'll try it...
30It looks got in commercials and on the runway, but I'd never wear it, I'm not pale enough.
31I read somewhere that Lancome has one out too. Also I figured that if you use the gloss thinly over a red lipstick you can darken it a little...
32black lipstick is great. and not just because it was on a runway with some designer's name on it. although i do think it looks kind of cool all shiny ^^. manic panic is one of the leading cosmetic brands in the goth and punk industry and their black lipstick is one of the best available. by saying "if you're OK with shopping at a place called Vampfangs.com, have at it." you are really deducing the significance that this little "trend" began with stores, and brands like Vampfangs.com, Manic Panic, or even Hot Topic. i agree that the look is not for every one, but by making condescending comments about the original look that sparked the inspiration for this trend, you make yourself appear to be idealizing the fashion industry's twist on the goth classic when both should be esteemed with equal significance, not one having superiority over the other.
