Testers at Target — yes! After popping in the megastore during on a weekend of errand running, I checked out the latest addition to their newly boosted cosmetics section.
Just as Target's GO International line features lower-priced designer fashions, three new collections from top names in the makeup world now line the aisles. Touted as more affordable than the fancy designer counterparts, the designers include JK Jemma Kidd ($14–$36), Napoleon Perdis' NP Set ($12—$30), and Pixi Cosmetics' Pixi ($12—$39).
I'm all for one-stop shopping and bringing designers to the masses. But in this rough economy, will shoppers pay 17 bucks for mascara at Target? To see all of the loot, read more.

People pay more at a department store because of the excellent service from professionals. At target, what the heck is the point? You buy drug store makeup because its cheap. I hope no one wastes their money on it.
1That seems odd to me, still charging those prices for makeup @ Target.
2I mean, it's still drugstore. I mean, I do spend $25 on mascara, but at the department store.
I don't know how well it'll go over.
Because like puddlesworth said, people buy drugstore makeup because it's affordable.
While the colors may be nice, for those prices why not just buy the department store version? There isn't a huge difference.
3I really like Pixi - the Oxford Street boutique in London is adorable. I almost hate to see it coming to Target, because it will be seen as "drugstore" makeup
And Jemma Kidd is pretty nice as well, but again, I don't see Target (where everyone goes for cheap
stuff) as the place for higher-end brands like these...
4I might try a couple of things, but if the prices are this high, I'd rather just go to Sephora or Ulta and buy the brands that I know I love. I think these prices are too high for Target.
5I love Target, but I just think this is a weird idea. Like some other people have said, part of the reason you pay more for department store makeup is the service and what not. I'm sure if they start selling these lines at my local Target I'll check them out, but I don't know if I'd actually buy anything. I'd probably be more likely to go to Sephora or Ulta and buy something else.
6The only thing I would buy would be the Pixi eyeshadow palette, 20 shades for $38. Everything else is still too pricey. $18 for an eyeshadow? Might as well go to the department store, even a MAC shadow is cheaper. I still love me some Target though!
7The proof is in the quality. I'd test these in small quantities.
8If I love the color, sure, I'd spring for it. Problem is I've been face locked for probably 5 years now, so I doubt I'd be able to talk myself into shelling out that kind of cash for colors I already own in ten other iterations.
9I will check out the lines, but I could almost guarantee that if you wait long enough these will be on the end of aisle clearance sections that I love to raid. I think some of the make up may be worth it, but they have stiff competition with being right next to the affordable stuff.
10I can't believe they are priced so high- in Target!! I'd be kind of afraid of the testers. Wonder about their return policy? Doubt it could beat Sephora's policies. mgiorgio is right- I'll be waiting for clearance time (just like their designer clothing lines).
11i dunno for that price i'll grab some bare minerals or other brand at sephora. . i don't go to Target and get the sephora experience why would I pay the sephora price???
I mean sephora customer service is next to none. And their return policy cannot be beat at all. . . I mean come on, they'll take anything back!!!
12I agree with Prada-why would you go to Target for something that you can get a better deal on at the department store! I mean, if you're gonna pay department prices, go to a department store.
13Here, here, Prada, you have that right!
14Seriously, if you're going to pay the same amount as you would at a high end store you might as well go high end all the way. That way you not only still get a great product, you also get the glitzy experience.
15It could possibly work.
16There will always be impulse purchases and people shopping for gifts.
And while a lot of people here know about stores like Sephora and high end brands, there are also a lot of people that have no clue that they exist.
Of course a lot of people that shop big box stores like Target are looking for a bargain and may pass up higher priced cosmetics.
It'll be interesting to see what happens.
I think the one thing Target is counting on is exclusivity. These are brands not yet sold anywhere in the US. I'm pretty sure Sephora got rid of NP, and recall only finding Pixi and JK in the UK (please correct me if I'm wrong). So on that point alone, people may spring for the higher priced cosmetics. Look at how well they do with the Go International lines -- you can't get those designer pieces anywhere else, so you pay the higher price knowing they have many other cheaper items, but these are "exclusives".
I've been a Boots fan for over 30 years, so finding it at Target has been a blessing (no more schlepping bottles, jars, etc. overseas to replenish my supplies -- although Boots in the UK has so much more I wish they'd bring over.) Target and CVS are the only places to purchase here in the US, so even though the prices are higher than expected for chain stores, I'll still pay it.
Now if Marks and Spencer's would bring over their lingerie I'd be one happy girl! (I just purchased over a dozen bras last week in London because they are the best quality, prettiest styles, and come in every cup size from A to G! And their black cotton knickers NEVER fade no matter how many times you throw them in the washer and dryer!)
17Actually Punk Glam, Jemma Kidd is sold Neiman Marcus.
18Thanks for the clarification desodaro, I've never seen it at NM but my local kinda of bites so thats not surprising! Is it the same price? I wonder with this new collaboration if it'll be phased out like NP was at Sephora.
19I agree with everything that has been said by other posters. If I'm willing to spend $17 on mascara I would just head to a dept store or Sephora, especially with their great beauty rewards program.
20I'm excited about this. I never knew where to get Jemma Kidd stuff besides ebay and now I can hit up Target for it! I think it's cool they're trying to expand their horizons
21Good points, punk glam queen. Even if it's at Target, I like the idea of these being available in the US. Now if only I can get them to sell Flake bars, Malteasers, Tim Tams, and Jaffa cakes...
22I really would like to try out some of these lines so if I can test them out there I will. I love testers no matter what. I can't say I would buy them unless there was a big difference between these brands and drugstore brands.
23I've been known to drop a lot of money on eye shadows and other products but when I do I like going to a department store or a place like sephora where there is a professional to give me helpful suggestions and contributions. Also the mall and target are equidistant from me so it doesn't really make a difference to a matter of convenience. What I think target should do is work with those brands to develop less expensive alternatives, like Sonia Kashuk did a few years ago.
24The only time I spend $18.00 on mascara is during the winter holiday sales when it will help me get the makeup giftsets at the high-end stores, love those collections! Otherwise it is Maybelline Great Lash.
I was totally into MAC and Sephora.com for my wedding, but
since my lifestyle is simpler these days, I admit to buying "drugstore". At least indulging is more affordable!
The department store product I really miss is Color-Me-Beautiful eyeshadows. So '80s LOL, but great colors which would still be stylish today.
25chekc out the cosmetics coupon site: www.ladycoupon.com/coupon/cosmetics
26www.ladycoupon.com collects many coupons that a lady may interested in.
I would rather buy Boots (best foundation ever!) or Sonia Kashuk.
27Considering the fact that target wont let you return opened make up, and I hate the idea of tester products, I wouldn't spend that much for make up there. I would rather go to a department store and be able to try the make up first if I was going to spend that much.
