OK, so Gwen Stefani's new Harajuku Lovers scents aren't my favorite, but she sure does know how to market them. The Harajuku Lovers fragrance website is a look into Gwen's obsession with wild cuteness. You can submit your own karaoke video or check out profiles of her backup dancers, all while hypertwee cartoons buzz around the screen to the beat of eight-bit video-game tunes. Though I've never loved the way Gwen interprets Japanese culture (G, you've gotta stop mispronouncing Harajuku!), this ad definitely gets your attention. There's no doubt (sorry!) that she's savvy with her branding — but what do you think of this spot?

Barf. It makes me think of anime, which is so painfully dorky.
1I really enjoy Gwen's music, but if I saw this on TV, I would flat-out think it was a joke or parody.
Fragrance ads are just not good. They're usually weird (like SJP's Covet ads) or meaningless (people lounging around on the beach). But I guess it's hard to convey a smell via sight, so they are fairly challenged.
2i like it! It is playful and fun.

I agree with deanna, fragrance ads are always odd. This one's no exception
4I think if I were a lot younger I would like it, like if I were 10
5I think it's cute, but definitely marketed for a younger audience.
6cute
7it's certainly colorful, to say the least...
8I liked that it was cute but i didnt like it casue its like she advertising to my little sister.
9The ad is kind of cool and I love your use of puns Bella!
10i think not..
11i mean..its a very creative idea
I love Gwen, but I HATE her whole Harajuku lovers line. All of it is terrible.
12The bottles are super cute, but the fragrances are too sweet for my tastes. Cute commercial, but a little busy for me.
13When the bottles first started appearing in magazines like Allure, they always had the Gwen bottle's head on backwards. I could never figure out why her top was down so low with a giant bow at the neck.
14Cute and creative.
15I think it's Tokidoki-ish.
16Wow.
17This looks like that Sailor Moon merchandise commercial I used to watch as a kid!
It's very Japanese and cute, or should I say kawaii!
18The ad is super cute. I really like the brand.
19I don't get it.
Maybe I'm too old.
I'll continue to incorporate Latin culture in my life-- inserting Spanish words into everyday conversation, cooking with chiles, and trying to get some sense out of reguetón.
This Japanese crap is for tweens. And Gwen Stefani wannabes.
PS, I'm so sick of her, don't even get me started.
PPS, How do you pronounce Harajuku anyway?
20I think it's cute, but then, I like the Harajuku stuff Gwen promotes.
@ terryt18- is someone telling you that you have to incorporate Latin culture into your life even though you don't like it or don't get it?
21Phonetically, it is "Ha-ra-juu-ku" Pretty easy. I'm not sure why bella thinks the way Gwen is pronouncing it is incorrect. I know I've heard some gaijin Americans pronounce it more like, "Hara-ji-ku" which in Japanese is pretty incorrect.
*shrug* I guess you're entitled to your opinion terryt18, but I've been incorporating Asian influence into my style for many years and I'm 27. I actually think Gwen was more inspired by the ganguro girls of Shibuya (look them up on wikipedia) than the real Harajuku girls, who fall more into the definition of sweet lolita or gothic lolita. Hahaha, when I lived in Tokyo my hairdresser asked me what I thought of Gwen's clothing lines. I said liked a few piece from L.A.M.B. but the Harajuku Lovers stuff was horrible. She laughed since she was one of those girls out in Harajuku on Sundays dressed up, and said they all hated having their "name" attached to it.
And there is your Japanese cultural (and language) lesson for the day.
22What's odd is that I love the Japanese culture, but this seems cloying; it's trying too hard to be kawaii.
23Love Gwen but this ads looks like a Japanese video game for kids. LOL
BTW, Harajuku is also a train station in Japan...
24LOL, This is ridonculous. I used to really like gwen, but then again, that was when I was like 14.
25It's Ok, I don't like but i don't hate it, if I was like 6 or 7 I would sooo love but now it's just too much color and too much noice for me at least.
26No, no one makes me incorporate Latin culture into my life; I do it of my own volition.
(and due to the Giant Mexican Chupacabra in my closet!)
I just don't get the Japanese stuff-- the anime/manga, the Harajuku/Shibuya, et al.
Yes, I realize my glib examples don't encompass all that is Japan.
And I just don't like Gwen. Don't even get me started.
I didn't mean to offend (or maybe I did a little.)
So sorry, Sumire, and I'm sure you have a boldly personal Asian-influenced style. Work it, girl.
Chacon a son gout.
Or, how about: Cada perico a su estaca, cada changa a su mecate.
27Awwwww, how CUUUUUTE!
28It's cute & creative, but I agree with Tabloid, it's like an ad for a Japanese video game!
29I thought the ad was adorable but definitely targeted to a younger audience. Not for me even though I really love my My Little Ponies I couldn't wear a perfume for that targeted audience.
30I love Gwen, but the commercial looks like a kiddie anime show promo.
31its too long.
32its cute, i saw the bottles in the store, they smell cute too!
33Gwen Stefani will always have my heart so it's become difficult for me to say I don't like everything she does. Although, this ad was just too much put together in one. It must be a challenge to describe a smell over sight. Good try Gwen, but me no likey
34I'm not into the Japanese Harajuku cult at all, but I really LOVE her new fragrances. I just bought Lil' Angel. I'm just going to have to hide the bottle in my bathroom because I'm embarrassed that it looks like a 10 years olds perfume.
Oh...and to terry18....Robbie Williams fan?
35I love all of Gwen's fashion lines and fragrances...Also, I lived a 10 minute walk away from the harajuku station, until 6 months ago, and they all really liked Gwen's way of picturising them in clothing and HIGH END FASHION! Unless people went to the Harajuku area, they wouldn't know anything about it without this! I love Gwens music also! Harajuku is also pronounced right by Gwen-So get your facts right b*tch!
