Regardless of the haircare sponsor of any show during Fashion Week, stylists pack L'Oreal Elnett hairspray in their bags like contraband. Which it is: The stuff has been banned in the US since 1987 due to the use of ozone-damaging flourocarbon propellants. Until now, that is. With a few small tweaks to the delivery system, L'Oreal is releasing Elnett Satin next month exclusively through Target. Prices range from $6.99 for two ounces to $13.99 for 11 ounces, one variety of which includes a UV filter.

Who uses hair spray? This isn't the 80s.
1Unless you are on tv or walking the runway, I don't see the point.
Having said that, I will be bottle promptly after it comes out.
I'm excited about it. I want to use it at shoots now. Yippee!
2I've heard nothing but good things about this spray, well except for the reason why it banned here. I'd like some of the legal one.
3I Love me some hairspray! I may be california born and raised but I make my hair Jersey high!
4I can't believe they charge so much for it in the US! I live in the UK and it's about £2 for a bottle. Still, it is amazing and doesn't leave you with that "hairspray" hair.
5Yay!!! I will have the legal one and I am excited. This stuff is supposed to be awesome!
6LOVE HER. DIVA.
7ChristinaMUFE-- believe it or not, hairspray is vital to use after you style so the style STAYS even after your gel/mousse/whatever gives out. Everyone uses hairspray.
I use hairspray to tame flyaways for good.
If hair spray went away, I can think of at least three industries that would suffer in one way or another: telvision/movies, modeling and dance.
I have awful memories of that stuff from ballet. One ballet dancer mom smuggled it in with her tote for the Nutcracker production and sprayed every dancer's hair with it. It took 3 days to wash the stuff out after performances were done. I will never ever buy that stuff.
How exactly was it tweaked? Did they take out the CFC, bella?
8Hmm i'd like to try this. My BB Spray de Mode is kinda pricey, this could be a wallet friendly replacement
9Yes it's finally legal!!
10I bought this stuff when I was in France last year at the local Monoprix because they lost my luggage. I would not recommend it. The smell is god-aweful... horrible... gross... worst smelling hairspray ever. I'd much rather use Shaper or Big Sexy Hair or any hairspray by Bumble and Bumble.
I also used to not understand the wonders of hairspray and thought I didn't need it and didn't know how to use it properly - (meaning how close to spray and how long to spray). Now having figured those things out for my hair type (fine thin hair that falls flat without any product and even more flat with the wrong products)... hairspray is a necessary staple to having looking normal looking hair all day. (for me personally)
11I love, love, love this stuff. I didn't realize that the reason it was unavailable in the U.S. was for environmental purposes, which makes me feel a little icky about being a devoted fan, but this stuff is great. As someone with curly hair who blows it straight, this is a must have. A little expensive for the U.S. market, but whatever it's available.
Ellenora-I'm not sure what that dancer mom did to your hair, but mine always brushes right out (as advertised).
12wait, so.. what makes it legal now? does it have cfc's in it?
13I didn't know it was illegal in the US! I watch those ads all the time in France. Claudia Schiffer was the Ellnett girl for years before Penelope Cruz.
14Ohhh, can't wait!!
15Hi Ellenora,
Thanks for your comment. The company released the following statement:
As any other hairspray in the U.S., Elnett Satin does not contain CFC's (that deplete the ozone layer), and it is compliant with the most stringent VOC standard (California). Again, this is not specific to Elnett Satin but applies to all hairsprays sold in the U.S.
So we can now spray with clear consciences!
16I LOVE THIS STUFF!
I buy it when I go to London, and sneak it back in my suitcase. It is great stuff!
17I wear a little of this to keep my longer bangs to the side. I don't shellac them to my head, but they tend to fall in my face without it.
Problem is, it smells like old lady. But it's still better than that awful Bumble & Bumble Spray de Mode. It was OK at first and then it just smelled like kerosene.
18BellaSugar-ah, I understand now. I was wondering at my computer thinking, "What makes it safe to sell now?" Thank you for clarifying.
19I don't think I have a need for this but it's great that people don't have to smuggle it in to the country illegally anymore.
20Just read a great article about Elnett, I forget which magazine. Sorry! The European version is different than the American version, which is why people still try to sneak it back to the USA. The American version has more water and other things which weigh the hair down more. I would love to have several cans of the real stuff. According to the article it does not make the hair stiff or sticky. I need this / EBay anybody!!!
21I just purchased elnett after reading rave reviews as well. I even got the 11 ounce one. I thought perhaps it was just me with the smell. it is the most disgusting thing I have smelled and even my little kids asked me what that smell was. they have got to do something about the smell. it smells like formaldehyde. it was a total waste of money as I just cannot bring myself to use it anymore. going to call their customer service but seriously, they need to pretty up the scent a little bit. it is really gross. i don't need something flowery or very scented but they need to mask this somehow.
