For seasons to come, girls will bring pictures of LC's hairstyle at the 2008 VMAs into salons and confused hairstylists will try to piece together what is going on in the back of Lauren's head. Is her hair braided? Is it curled? Twisted? A bun? A chignon? Those hairstylists will silently curse Christine Symonds, stylist at Warren-Tricomi Los Angeles, who did Lauren's hair for the awards. "It's pretty simple. Just a lot of pins. It's a pin-head 'do!" she said. "We did a similar look at the premiere party for The Hills, but for the VMAs we made it more romantic."
For her how-to, just read more.
- STEP ONE: Part hair in the middle. Use a medium-barrel curling iron to create some defined waves. Symonds then smoothed on Warren Tricomi Finishing Cream to prevent frizz.
- STEP TWO: Pull all the hair except the front section on either side into a messy bun. "The kind where you make a ponytail but don't pull it all the way through, not the kind where you coil hair around and put an elastic around it," explained Symonds. Secure with a clear elastic, like Blax Snag-Free Hair Elastics.
- STEP THREE: Symonds used blonde bobby pins, like Scunci Classic Pins, to twist up curls from the front and pin them into the bun.
- STEP FOUR: Secure the look with hairspray. Symonds used Redken Workforce 09.

She looks fantastic that night
1I loved her hair that night. I'm totally trying this look, even though I know I don't have enough arms to make that happen by myself.
2Wow that looks weirdly simple, will give it a try. Thanks for the tutorial Bella!
Is there any pic of the back of her head floating around? I can't really figure out what the messy bun looks like.
3thank you!!! I was watching her in slow-mo last night to try to see the back because I loved this so much!!
4Gorgeous! I
her hair!
5Thank you so much! I cannot wait to try this for an upcoming wedding!
6Perfect, I'm going to have to play with attempting this look!
7Woohoo! Thank you. I can't wait to try this out. It's so pretty.
8Definitely Emescloset, I'm going to try this for a wedding too
9It sounds so simple, but I don't think it will come out as beautiful. Her dress was fabulous too.
10pretty hair, thanks for the tips. i kind of can't wait until she's not famous anymore, though.
11Bella, hilarious about girls coming into hair salons with that picture and confused stylists. lol.
I also think it's one of the prettiest up-dos I've ever seen.
12Thank you Bella!
13I absolutely love this hair do! It's perfect.
14Thank you!!! I doubt it's really as easy as the stylist claims though. Advah, I've been wondering that too. I keep seeing front and side shots, but I want to see this hairstyle from the back too.
15So pretty...but I have a feeling my version wouldn't come out this great. Ha.
16gorgeous. i would love to try it and see what kind of diaster i can make. hah.
17i do this *sort* of thing with my hair all the time. i'm naturally curly, so i don't need the curling iron. i actually will use a flat iron to take the kink out of the hair at the top of my head, that way it has the straight bit on top. then, i do a half-a**ed french twist, just make it really messy. sometimes i'll do it high on my crown, and sometimes low at the neck. depends on the length of my hair at the time and how i feel. then i just bobby pin away! i try to tuck the pins behind the bun/twist as much as possible.
for those of you/us with shorter hair, SKIP the messy bun that the stylist recommends above. just do a messy twist. it takes a couple of times to get it right, just keep messing around. (if you're afraid of frizz and you're naturally curly, dampen your hands) when my hair is long, i'll twist it a lot around my thumb, then pin it. but i like the idea of the invisible elastic.
anyways, that's what i do. it doesn't look nearly as perfect as lc's above, but 1) i'm naturally curly, that makes a big difference in the level of perfection, and 2) i'm not a stylist.
just be careful, it can look very mature if you're wearing professional clothes.
18I want this hair now!
19I agree with previous posters . . . I love this look for a wedding. I'd love to wear my hair like that at my wedding one day
20^ME TOO!!
21You'll need a stylist for this, can't do it for yourself..
22Thanks Bella-This will look prettier on all your reader than it did on Lauren.
23if anyone finds the back of this style anywhere, please post it! i'm dying to see what it looks like from behind!
thanks!
24thank you thank you thank you
25It's so pretty, I want to try it even for just a day of class
26I could never get my hair to look that nice
27i love her style..but i don't think i cant make it
