It's safe to say that when it comes to nail polish, black is the new neutral. But if glossy darkness is beginning to bore you, here's a cool way to update it. I ran into a friend the other day and loved her nail polish so much that I had to snap a picture:

She got this look by using a base coat, then slicking on two coats of Essie nail color ($8) in Licorice. After that, one coat of glitter polish (such as Essie's Golden Nugget) adds a not-too-crazy amount of sparkle. On short nails, it keeps that rocker-girl attitude in a color that's now considered a safe-bet neutral.

wow, this is kind of a middle school flashback, no? in a good way, though.
1Oooo, I'm loving it!
I need to get some opinions though... I work as a receptionist
a law firm. We aren't conservative but we are not casual. Is it appropriate for me to wear dark colored nail polish...black, OPI Russian Navy...etc.? Thanks!
2i've done the same thing but with a silver glitter polish....looks good!
3I've got a Loreal Black Gold from last year, it was a special edition. It has really tiny, subtle golden sparkle in it and I love it.
4Love it! Softens up matte black which I usually find too harsh. Nice ring too!!
5This looks like macadam, the road, concrete. Very tough. I'd like to try this!
6one to try - for those who like this look - is Sephora by OPI - Never Enough Shoes... black with glitter!
7Hottpink, I would maybe ask around to see what would be OK. I think that if you have very clean, neat nails — immaculately manicured — then black nail polish might be allowed. But to be sure, I'd hint around and ask. Some offices are very conservative!
8the gold sparkles look especially good on the black nails...
9Thanks Bella!
10heY!! i always do that
11with Black, but i dont
know why they look boring
all black to me, so i luv
to so this
I agree with Bella, as long as the nails are clean and the color is kept even, it shouldn't be a problem. Try to always add a shiny, clear top coat to the nails to give them an extra glow (if you're not already using the glitter top coat they mentioned in the post). That's what I do when I try to sneak in bolder colors and the shine generally makes them more passable (and keeps them chip resistant, too). I know it's not a super-original idea, but more of a reminder.
12i've been wearing black polish with glitter for over a year!
13i started when i noticed everyone was wearing black like i was...
i decided to mix it up
Years ago, I dunno, I must have been ten, I used to have sparkly black nail polish which I adored. I wonder if they still sell that color...
14I work at a college of law, and I rock dark nails all the time. As long as you keep the chips away, it shouldn't be a problem.
15Genius! so pretty and original!
16I absolutely love that look and yes, very cool ring! Thanks also, ladies, for all the other suggestions as well!
17How cool and funky! That's a great way to keep the dark colors around. Everyone seems to love them and that would seem more individualistic. (I don't wear dark polishes on my fingernails.. just sometimes on my toes. It seems so overdone, so that it just a cool new way to wear it.)
18Cute idea.
19That's really cool! I've never had black nails before but I might try it.
20I love it!
21Mm, I had a nail polish that exact color when I was like.. 10? haha, it was black with gold sparkles. I remember my aunt gave it to me, and I was always wearing it. I dont know if I would today. I still wear black nail polish sometimes, but im definately over the sparkles.
22I decided to try it after reading this and got so many compliments! problem is they're from the 14 year old girls I teach! oh well I think they're fun...
23I love the gold sparkles. It's an unexpected twist and I dig it!
24OMG! I bought a gold glittery polish to do my nails like this for Halloween! (I'm gonna be a bee) Guess I can leave it on afterwards too.
25I'm not sure if it doesn't translate on the screen but that doesn't look as pretty as it sounds. I think dark purple glitter would be gorgeous.
26I bet the brand Wet & Wild has it for a lot less $$$$$$$$$$
