Just as makeup artists mix their own colors for fashion shows, so do nail technicians. If all goes well, the colors hit stores in the following season. Until then, though, you can do as they do and make your own color.
"Everyone has half-empty enamel bottles lying around at home," says Roxanne Valinoti, CND Nail Ambassador. "These make it easy to custom-blend new colors from existing colors already in your collection." The trick? Valinoti recommends starting with a lighter color, then adding a darker shade drop by drop until you get the hue you're hoping for.
Alternatively, you can use a piece of waxed paper as your "palette," blending polishes there for a one-off manicure. (That's what I did for the picture you see here; sorry that my finger looks like Lowly Worm.) When you're done, you'll have a nail color that's uniquely yours — unless, of course, a trend-spotter sees it and decides to put it into production.

When I was in middle school I decided to create my own light blue polish (this was several years before Hard Candy and Urban Decay came onto the scene). The color was beautiful. I was so pleased with myself, and then I noticed the polish was eating through the plastic cup that I mixed it in. I ran down the hall to the bathroom to dispose of it, and while doing that some of the polish got onto the hardwood floor in the hall. It was just a few little drops, and it remained visible until I was out of college.
Moral of the story, be very careful if you try this at home!
1I was just reading about this on a site the other day. It was probably All Lacquered Up, but anyways, they had a gorgeous gray color on there that I wanted so bad, but it was mixed.
Like elizabee said, I've tried to mix polishes and I've melted paper cups too, haha. I guess you can only use glass? I'm pretty lazy so I tried once and figured I just wasn't supposed to do it
2I've always wondered what would happen if you mixed mac pigment or something like it into clear nail polish.
3I do this all the time! I really thought I was the only one (haha), but yeah I've been doing this for years because I paint my nails so often and I get bored with the same colors so I constantly do this - my favorite was one time that I made this orange-peachy color by mixing bright orange, yellow, and a little pink - so pretty and tropical-looking!
4Yeah, I've done this before too, but I didn't like what the final product was.
