I love playing the role of DearSugar, even if it is just for a fleeting moment, so when team member alliallialli wrote in, I just had to reply:
Hi Bella! Seeing as about one half of the population supposedly has keratosis pilaris, but what the heck are you to do about it? One member left a comment on my profile page about a lotion from Sephora that works, but it's a tad expensive and I don't live near a Sephy...I was wondering if you could shed some light on the subject?
Keratosis pilaris, is a genetic condition of bumps on the skin, which often looks like goose bumps or acne. Commonly known as "chicken skin," the bumps can be inflamed, rough, bumpy, and/or rashy.
There is no known treatment for the condition, but it tends to reduce with age. To make less noticable: prevent excess dryness by using a moisturizing, mild soap-free cleanser, then exfoliate with a light buffer. Finish off by applying a lotion with alpha hydroxy, glycolic, salicylic, or lactic acid, and of course — don't scratch or pick. Coconut oil is said to help, too. Prescription treatments are available, if needed.

I have this, too, and asked my dermatologist about it. She recommended Eucerin Plus, just like Bella did, but I forget to apply it every day, so I'm not seeing great results.
1Great recommendations. That Eucerin creme is so thick you have to work it(!) in good.
2Yep, Eucerin works. You have to use it consistently and over the whole area, and it improves in patches before the whole thing goes away. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember reading that the uric acid (urea - synthetic urine ingredient, not real pee in the lotion!) was the important ingredient.
3We started using a shower filter and it seemed to better my husbands condition
4Lubriderm just came out with a new lotion with AHA in it. I think it's about $7.99 and I got mine at WalGreens!
5I have this, and have a hard time not picking at my arms. My legs have it pretty bad as well so I hate wearing shorts. I just try to exfoliate and moisturize as much as possible.
It's so funny I saw this since I blogged about this a few months ago!
6I think the AHA is key to exfoliate. Someone on BPJ mentioned this product a while ago and I did some more research: http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100310&navAction=jump&n...
It's Walgreens brand alpha hydroxy lotion that people rave about for skin conditions like this. I only wish I had a Walgreens near by to buy the place out. Exfoliates and moisturizes. Make a note- AHA's make you more sensitive to sun, so don't forget some type of sunblock
7I love your suggestions. I think you are right about the uric acid, vinigrette...crazy, huh?
8yuck, i have this crap on my arms, sometimes they'll randomly go away and i'll have bump-less arms, but most of the time, ugh...it's gross, that's why i dont wear tanks or am never without a sweater.
9My husband has this and we seriously have been trying everything. He was going to go to Sephora today to get the KP Duty but I think I'm going to tell him to go to Walgreens first. KP Duty is $44 a jar whereas the Walgreens cream is only $5.99!
10Please do not waster your money on the KP Duty lotion! I tried it and it is not worth the money. It is really thick and would my couch if I sat on it within 30 minutes of applying. I got one from Avon (MOISTURE THERAPY Skin Bump Minimizer) that was $3.99 (on sale, now its $7.99) that has worked just as well, if not better! Sorry, I hate to see people waste money!! I also can't wait to try the Walgreens brand!
11My husband has really bad keratosis pilaris on his arms, has had it for years. I've bought him that DermaDoctor line meant to treat this condition, and it helps a little, but I don't think it will ever completely go away.
12I'm using the Avon lotion right now too! It was on sale, I couldn't resist. I've been using it for about a week now. The directions say to use it twice a day, I've only been using it once a day after my shower. I can't really notice quite a difference yet. The bumps on my arm aren't as bad as the ones on my legs. It feels a bit softer but you can still see the bumps. I've tried to exfoliate with a loofah every other day while using the lotion everyday. Running out of patience here...
13I have this too and just recently came across a website that puts some perspective behind treating the cause rather than the symptom (i.e. with creams). http://www.keratosispilaris.org/general-discussion/3628-i-have-hit-break... I recently learned from a nutritional expert that KP is very common among people with a vegetarian diet, but generally it can develop from a lack of vitamins A (mainly), E, B complex, and essential fatty acids. I just started taking supplements with my multivitamin to address this, only been a couple weeks, but hoping it will help. Also, just to confirm everyone else's comments, a simple cream with AHA works to reduce the bumps. I use a cheap one from Ulta. I think it's 20% AHA. It's meant for feet and tough skin but I find once a day on my arms works great.
14i've been doing all this for my stupid chicken skin... and Bella, it got worse
((( but only on
my right arm. so stupid.
15i am 19 years old and have tried everything to try to get rid of the SEVERE kp on my upper arms. Finally, almost two years ago i saw a post that said to scrub the kp while in the shower then appy clean and clear astringent with 2% salicylic acid, let it dry then put neostrata's body smoothing lotion with 10% glycolic acid and let dry before putting on clothes. Then, do the same at night minus the shower and scrubbing. Two weeks later i was kp free, i swear on anything! i have very fair skin and was worried the scrubbing would irritate my skin, the first few days it seemed a little irritated but after two weeks it gets soft and smooth. but to keep the kp away, you have to be consistant and do it every day until its gone. Then only a few times a week will keep it away!
