At the end of last month, a 13-year old boy was told by school officials in Hamilton, OH that he needed to remove his black lipstick and eye liner because his makeup was "extreme and distracting." The boy, Matt, didn't see it that way, saying, "I don't find this distracting at all." His mom felt that the school system was being discriminatory. But administrators claimed that the same rules apply for girls wearing excessive makeup. Do you think the school was right in singling him out? Or should Matt be able to flaunt his WentzPentz with pride?
Watch the video, then take the poll and tell me: Should guyliner be banned?

i'm pretty sure pete wentz and jared leto are the only people that can get away with guyliner. so unless you're them, do us all a favor and stay away from it.
1I don't really love guys wearing eyeliner, but I don't think it's really distracting. The kid should be able to wear whatever he wants.
2Nope sorry Robert Smith is the only guy who can get away with it. The other poseurs cannot.
3I don't think guys look good with eyeliner but if girls can wear it so should males if they so choose. Although I don't recommend it at all.
4Robert Smith is certainly the coolest guy that wears makeup, but he's not the only one who can get away with it. I think its cool for guys to wear makeup if it's to look gothic or weird or whatever, but if their doing it to be pretty and girly then I don't like it one bit.
5Am I a fan of men wearing more makeup than I do? No, not really.
But I think in this specific case the point is that it's his choice and preference to wear makeup and that it's sexist to tell one teen that his makeup is offensive but not to demand that the teenage girls also remove their makeup. I watched the video, and the kid wasn't even wearing that much and it definitely wasn't extreme, distracting or offensive. The teacher who asked him to remove it clearly just had a problem with the idea of a boy wearing eyeliner and I think it's wrong to discriminate like that. I can't believe that's what they want to teach their students--not to accept other people. The thought that teachers are so unwilling to accept and respect what this kid wants to do with his body really disgusts me. He's a teenager. If the administration isn't going to also ban makeup on girls then leave him alone and let him wear his makeup.
6Discrimination. If girls can wear it, boys should also be allowed to.
7However, I don't really think any guy looks good with eyeliner and no one looks good with black lipstick.
HECK NO!!!!!! My man looks ooooooohhh sooooooooooo hot with his guyliner on
8I don't think its distracting. Girls wear dark lipstick and eyeliner all the time.
I do find guyliner sexy though.
9I see the point that if girls can wear makeup to school, then boys can as well. But, it really isn't the norm in our society. It has only started to become more well known thanks to bands/celebs flaunting it around. I really don't think it should be banned, but I don't think it should be encouraged either.
10i think that eyeliner on guys is fine. but black lipstick? just no lol... even if i girl started wearing black lipstick they probably wouldn't permit it .
11ugh. this is soooo stupid!
none of that sh*t is "extreme"
you can BARELY tell he has eyeliner on...and it's not even FULL ON black lipstick
i went to school where girls looked like clowns with all the crap they put on...get.over.it.
so it's not "normal"...who gives an eff...what's not normal to you is normal to someone else.
he has pretty eyes, btw.
12If they allow it on girls, they should allow it on boys. His makeup was far from disruptive. Just a little eyeliner and some black lipstick. I doubt the other kids cared. The ones that would be unsettled probably already think of him as the weird goth kid with or without the eye makeup. Let him express himself.
13Ulgh, make up on blokes is not a good look- it looks gross on them! I would NOT want my man looking more made up than me, thanks...
14Only the Thin White Duke can wear some eye makeup and still look sexy. That's it.
15I say whatever let him wear makeup if he wants to. My guess is the reason it was considered distracting was because class/school was being disrupted by other students making fun of him. It doesn't cause a scene when girls wear makeup because its considered normal.
16I dont' think we should be stopping children from expressing themselves as long as it's in a manner that isn't posing harm to other students. I mean if the kids parents are okay with it I shouldn't be allowed to stop them. However these so called "rockstars" wearing eyeliner look beyond foolish and marketing specific "guyliner" for guys is just silly!
17I think maybe the "distracted" students if they where making fun of him and causing the disruption should have been asked to leave instead of the guy wearing make up. Seriously people need to start teaching their childrent to be more tolerant I mean it's eyeliner and lipstick. Do the big group of students in the school get to dictate the lesson plans in school too????
18i say no, but only because i dont think anything that silly should be banned. still looks terrible though, but what the hey
19Anyone should be able to wear anything they want. It's only distracting to people that let it be. Almost every guy I know rocks guyliner. It's 2008.
20Let me say that almost every guy I know means every guy in a rock band and my guy friends that do makeup. My athletic or couch potato guy friends don't. It wouldn't be a cohesive look. LOL.
21I think it looks really stupid, but I so do a lot of things. It shouldn't be banned and they should let him wear it. But I don't think it is a big enough issue to do a CNN report on it. Seriously that 13 year old will probably look back on this and be like "WHAT THE HECK WAS I THINKING?"
22I hate it and think it looks terrible, but it shouldn't be banned.
23To be honest - it's not all that exciting. There's definitely nothing distracting about what he's wearing, it's just normal (and rather inexpertly applied!) makeup. So what? My teachers didn't ban me from wearing bright purple lipstick (paired with classy blue eyshadow!) to school, and I'm willing to bet that's even more distracting than a monochrome look. I think it's just adults who need to work on their own personal prejudices.
24Do I think guys look sexy wearing cosmetics? No. Personally, I'm one of those girls who likes their men with no make-up, neat and clean-shaven.
Do I think it should be banned? Not necessarily. My opinion is this--as long as it doesn't pose a threat to others or themselves, it should be allowed. That doesn't mean we have to like it (please, who can really walk correctly with their pants dropping below the ass?). I lived the really awful strict appearance at school (strict uniform length, ugly scratchy uniforms, no make-up including chapstick and lipgloss, no nail polish, no high heels, one piercing in each ear, stud earrings only, etc). It was stifling, in my opinion. I was so happy when I was transferred out of that school.
25Only because it's fug, not because it's distracting.
26Personally I don't really like makeup on a man, however I also wouldn't tell them not to wear it. I don't think I've ever seen someone go up to a woman and say "gee wow you really don't know how to put on makeup, its really distracting!" Many women wear bright red lipstick everyday and we don't tell them to wear nothing, why is this different? Yes I know its a guy, but still, most women I know would be really mad if someone told her what makeup to wear who wasn't specifically asked about it(makeup artist, best friend, etc).
27I remember in middle school, I put my guy friend's long hair into a ponytail, and the administrator stopped him and demanded that he take it down otherwise he would be suspended.
28It doesn't bother me whether a guy wears eyeliner or not. But if girls at the school are told not to wear excessive make-up, then the guys shouldn't either. So in my opinion the decision is fair. I don't think they are being discriminatory, I think that they are just exercising their general rule.
29This is stupid, the kid is 13 for crying out loud! There will be alot more serious issues to come along the way other than this one. It looks like a story about a mom trying to make a big deal out of a insignificant one, I remember those types of moms when I was in highschool
30Only the Thin White Duke can wear some eye makeup and still look sexy. That's it.
Nope sorry Robert Smith is the only guy who can get away with it.
Don't forget Boy George!
31No, it is totally discriminatory and it smacks of when my mother wasn't allowed to wear pants to school. It wasn't even in class that he was told to remove it, so how could that administrator know that it was distracting. The truth is that it made that administrator uncomfortable
I totally disagree with you on this one msmoney23. This reminds me of my mother's mother crusading to make it possible for her daughter to wear pants. It reminds me of when my friend Lily was discriminated against because a sliver of her tummy was showing. She happened to be the tallest girl in school and they really didn't make Junior's shirts that covered her whole tummy. Coincidentally shorter less buxom girls were allowed to wear shirts that showed three or more inches of midriff. Her mom stuck up for her. In High School my mom stuck up for me when points were taken off of an academic presentation because the teacher thought I hadn't put an effort into my outfit, but I was wearing the nicest clothes we could afford, all clean and freshly ironed. It is a parent's job to stand by their child when they are unfairly treated especially during teenage years which are hard enough already, and I am thankful I knew those types of moms in high school.
32He should just wear less make-up - it is school after all
33I'm really not for banning anything
34Let him wear what he wants. If you don't like it, don't freakin' look at him! He's not hurting anyone and it's HIS face and his right.
35It's what the mother says at the end of the video that really makes a difference: the school has students where badges that proclaim "ACCEPTANCE" as a motto, and ask students "Do you value the uniqueness of others?"
Is the school asking him to remove his makeup because it's distracting or because they don't like his "goth" look as a boy?
36*has students wear badges
37Freddie Mercury in the '70s made it look hot. But then again I'm biased.
I don't find it attractive on guys, but that's more to do with what I like in men than any biases.
38chasingjamie, that's exactly what I think.
It's still not really a legitimate reason to tell him to take it off; I honestly did not think it was that extreme.
It's not like the black was caked on his lips, like I've seen so many little "goth/emo" 12 year old girls, you know?
Also, props to the mom for sticking by her kid! Most mothers would probably be like "Just wipe the damn make-up off, you look like a girl."
Ellenora, I agree with you on the clean-shaven, neat and not made-up guy. :]
39Out of all the things that school kids can do to get in trouble.... is this really that harmful? Pick your battles. If it isnt hurting anyone, let it be.
40If the girls are allowed to wear make-up at the school then guys should too, but if the girls aren't then guys shouldn't either.
