Wearing brightly colored mascara is usually a lot of look, but it doesn't have to be. The newest varieties have just a hint of tint, adding depth and dimension without overpowering your lashes with color. They work by adding colored pigments to a dark base, which can play up your eye color without making you look like an extra in The Warriors.

If your eyes are brown: Make the color stand out by using a dark blue mascara, such as Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lash Extending mascara ($20) in Midnight.
If your eyes are green: Look for a mascara with plum undertones to bring out your eye color. Benefit BADgal Plum ($19) is subtle enough that you could wear it to even a conservative office.
If your eyes are hazel: Makeup artist Pat McGrath used Cover Girl ExactEyelights at the Spring 2009 Anna Sui show. Available in four shades, each uses small metallic pigments to reflect light and emphasize the eye color. Black Gold ($8.95) is gorgeous on hazel eyes.
If your eyes are blue: Look for a brown or copper-toned mascara to highlight blue irises. I'm a fan of Exceptionnel de Chanel mascara ($28) in Smoky Brun; the tri-sided wand does a great job of separating lashes and creating volume, and the black-brown color is very sultry.

I'm not sure about using non-black mascara on my lashes; I might just use the midnight blue one on the tips!
1Has anyone used the CG exact eyelights? I keep seeing those on random blogs and think about buying it, but no one has actually said much about the mascara other than it's tinted different colors.
2Brittanyk, I haven't played around with it on my own eyes but I saw it being applied in person at the Anna Sui show (and held the wand, etc). The color is pretty subtle, but it does make the eyes pop quite a bit. Good volume and lengthening, too.
3Hmmm I'll have to shop around for a cheaper copper version. I'd like to only waste a few dollars vs almost $30 in case it doesn't work for me.

5I love colored mascaras! I wore the great lash royal blue one quite a lot this summer, but it didn't seem over the top because I paired it with light eyeshadow and the mascara doesn't do much (or anything) in the way of thickening, so it was fairly subtle. I would love to try others, though (especially since while I loved the color, I wasn't impressed with any of the features of the mascara)!
6I'd like to try it, but I'm pretty OBSESSED with black mascara. If they could find one that would add depth and dimension to my eyes WHILE darkening, lengthening, volumizing..I'd be all over it. Oh, dream mascara, where are you...
7Thanks, Bella!
8I love the eyelights. I got it in Black Gold, and it really makes your eyes pop!! I definitely recommend it!!
9I got the CG Eyelights in Black Gold today and it is beautiful, perfect, excellent, truly. It does make your eyes pop, bacon is right. Thanks again Bella for another great tip!
10I have always worn colored mascara...blue is my color of choice, I've been wearing it for like 8 years. My friends always say it's my "signature look" LOL. I also go for eggplant or plum colored too.
11i like the plum idea...i used to wear all kinds of crazy mascaras in the mid 90s -- white, BRIGHT blue, and actual purple. i am glad that is not what the trend is this time around! i'm also shocked/impressed that you referenced the warriors there! people have never heard of that movie before, always surprises me -- so awesome
12I've been wanting to try the CG eye lights too... I saw them in ULTA... maybe I'll pick one up tonight... I always concentrate on my eyes as the main focus.. so hopefully they'll help!
13Scis-is-sorrrz, come out and play-ayyyyyyyy!
14I have blue-green eyes and I love plum or purple mascara. I should try the copper too.
15i am dying to try the Benefit Plum!
16I just bought the CoverGirl one for brown eyes. I love it. I am LOVING the brush too. Go for it!!
17Alas, the CG Eyelight in Black Gold isn't working for me. Pretty good mascara, so it wasn't a waste, but my hopes that it would play up the color of my eyes were dashed. To be fair, I have a difficult eye color (or eye colors, I should say), with dark blue on the edges going steely blue and then green and gold around the iris.
18where can i find the CG eyelight! ive looked for it at walgreens and it wasn't there!
