One of my friends is a true follower of all things natural. Food? All organic and local. Clothing? Either recycled or handsewn. Beauty? When it comes to products, nothing of the paraben/synthetic nature remotely touches her body.
So, when I saw her splash a little bergamot oil on her pits one day, I was intrigued. "It's a natural deodorizer," she said. I gave it a whirl. With surprising results, I was practically stink-free. From what I could tell, my underarms smelled rather nice — well, like citrus. She also recommended I dab on a little baking soda if I ever felt a little drippy.
Like playing mad scientist? You can always mix up your own custom scent. Try Aura Cacia Bergamot Essential Oil ($13.59) paired with a complementary aroma such as sandalwood, nutmeg, vetiver, geranium, lavender, lemon, neroli, or ylang ylang.

definitely going to try this one! thanks for the tip. i love hearing random ideas that work!
1I have been reading how bad commercial deodorants are for you and for a week now I have stopped wearing it (that's kinda gross but i don't stink! haha) I wanted to try natural ones they sell at Whole Foods but was afraid they will leave white marks on my clothes. I will definitely try the bergamot and maybe mix it with jasmine. Thanks for posting this!
2I think I'll actually try this.
3Hmmm...I'd try it, but I feel like it may irritate my skin. Every natural deoderant I've ever tried has made my underarms so red and itchy. I wonder if this would have that same effect...
4Interesting. I happen to have bergamot EO.
5Bergamot is also good for keeping kittens off curtains - if you make a light spray of bergamot (water is fine, just be sure not to mist so hard that it ruins the fabric) and it helps keep cats away from furniture, curtains, etc. Worked like a charm on my cat when he was little...he hated the smell but its quite pleasant for humans of course.
6Great tip, Shadowdamage! I'll have to try that one.
7emalove- I have to wear natural deodorant (I'm allergic to anti-perspirant)- and I always have to put lotion on my underarms first. That seems to have cut back on the severe dry skin it caused.
Where would you get bergamot oil?
8I think I'll try this too, even though I love my Mitchum.
9I really wish I could just use deodrant. Unfortunately, I am a sweaty Betty.
10I hate deordorant, so this sound so good to me - does it help with perspiration, though?
11this is a great tip, but i too need stronger antiperspirant protection. aura cacia is the brand i personally use! (for other applications)
12graylen: the most popular chain i can think of getting essential oils at would be whole foods. usually any organic, holistic, or better health retailer carries them. but beware of imitation oils...if they arent authentic, they wont carry the qualities that make them effective.
Thanks corduroy! I'll check out Whole Foods this week. I also checked the aura cacia site and it had great essential oil information and recipes.
13Gonna have to try this. I'm trying to start using all natural products since moving away for uni my psoriasis has come up really bad.
14I don't think I could do this. I hate to be sweaty and have pit stains when it's so cold outside but roasting inside.
15great tip!
16Thanks for this Bella! I'm going to take this one for a test drive and get back to you! Fingers-crossed I don't stink up the office with my body odor!
17Can I mix the beramot oil with water and spray as a deodorant so should I apply it directly to the skin? Also baking soda is apprently a good deodorant.
