Ask A-list actresses who they trust with their skin care, and time after time, you'll hear the name Kate Somerville. As the founder and director of Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts — a seriously gorgeous skin care clinic in Los Angeles — she has become one of the most sought-after complexion experts.
Along with using a thorough skin care regimen (more on this soon!), Somerville says that eating well is key to having healthy, glowy, beautiful skin. "I think it’s huge – it’s almost everything," she says. For a few of her tips on eating right, read more.
- Drink plenty of water. "I think it’s important because it also cleanses your body," Somerville says. Our skin is our biggest organ, so if we’re unhealthy, it’s going to show in the skin."
- But don't drink too much soda or coffee. "Coffee is really hard on the skin because it's dehydrating," Somerville explains. "If you’re not eating right and you’re drinking a lot of coffee, your skin is the first thing that's going to show it."
- Go green. That means eating fresh vegetables, especially leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and lettuce. "The more green leaves, the better," Somerville advises. "If you eat live foods, you’re going to have the best skin that you possibly can have."

Agreed.
1Drinking more water is a great idea, but it is so hard to remember to do that. I really try, though.
2Coffee? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
What about dairy?
3Make sure you have a toilet attached to your ass if you're going to drink a lot of water. I remember following the water rules to the letter a while back and that's where my ass was always firmly planted, until of course I realized that I had a family and a job that needed my attention.
4I agree. I only drink alot of water when I'm at home because it keeps me contantly in the bathroom. Kind of hard to do with a busy schedule.
5Water is so key!
6I already do all of the above! Woot. And I guess my skin is fairly good.
7I don't drink coffee at all, but I drink 2 cups of black tea in the morning. Does black tea have the same effect on the skin as coffee???? I hope not!!
8I saw her at an event in Henri Bendels. Se also mentioned talk about talk vitamin for healthy skin.
9I'm also terrible about getting enough water but recently read somewhere that if you can tough it out for the first few weeks, eventually your body manages better and you don't have to go to the bathroom so often. Anyone have any thoughts on this idea?
10I've recently kept up with my water intake and haven't had to use the bathroom more than usual
Every one's body works differently. For the last 2-1/2 days I've started eating a salad with my veggie burger; just a simple salad with romaine hearts, chick peas and kidney beans
(no dressing.) So yummy and I take in more nutrients. I've also bought walnuts and throw some into the salad. I'm trying to eat much healthier since my skin is freaking out right now.
11It has been scientifically proven that coffee does NOT dehydrate you. So if you have 2-3 coffees a day it wont harm you. But as with everything moderation is the key.
12These are great. And so true. The water one and the green veggies seem to be the biggies in my mind...
13I drink coffee like once a day and I need to eat green veggies
14We hear this skin advice all the time, and if it was THAT easy to get beautiful skin, everyone would have it.
As long as I avoid dairy, my skin doesn't show what I am eating at all. My skin is actually better now, when I am not eating my best, than a few years ago when I ate picture perfect. Not sure why!
Re: coffee/tea/etc. I think it can be a bit of an illusion. Often people have coffee because they aren't getting enough sleep. lack of sleep definitely makes one look crappy. So coffee may get blamed when lack of sleep is really the culprit. Coffee/tea don't really affect my hyradation or complexion.
15why exactly is soda bad for your skin? is it because of the caffeine or the sugar?
16thanks Bella this is a great article, however it's not new advice. I've been reading this stuff for the past 10 years in every magzine. Give us more interesting atricles.
17I wish it was that easy!
18I drink tons of water everyday. I also drink ridiculous amount of coffee, as well. I can't live without my coffee.
19this type of remedy works quite quickly for me. i wish i could stick with the veggies and stay away from coffee but its HAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDD
jullarose, if you're interested in the harmfulness of soda, you should read 'skinny b*tch' to get the facts. i read it and pretty much quit soda and aspartame (including chewing gum!) but i do not remember why...
i've also read somewhere that consuming more sugar gives you more wrinkles! thats one piece of advice which is so hard to follow
20I agree VanillaJ... lots of water and coffee
21lotuslight, you make a great point!! more sleep=less coffee!! i know i'm sipping on starbucks now bc i'm exhausted!!
22i cant survive a day without my coke
23soda is the last thing i choose to drink but i love coffee
24i love water! it's so important for your health!
25to all of the water discussion people: ever since I graduated high school I've been really good about drinking one liter of water (about three bottles of water) a day (I know, that's a lot, but I've always liked water and I talk all day - I'm a teacher). when I first started out, I had to go to the bathroom all day, which was especially wierd for me because I heardly ever went to the bathroom before (I don't know what it was, maybe I have a very large bladder lol or somethin, but I would only go like three times a day). after a little while, though, my body got used to it and I'm back to my regular about three times a day. so, I don't know if it varies by body, but mine did get used to all the water...
26my caffeine (sp?) addiction is so out of control, but lately i've been forcing myself to drink water. And i treat myself to a squeeze of lemon in it
27Very obvious and easy to do. You should do these to take care of your body anyway.
I always make sure to drink water after I drink my coffee or soda (both of which I can't live without)
28Nina, coffee DOES dehydrate you. It's a diuretic. Every time I have 1 cup of coffee, I pee like 20 times a day, and I KNOW I'm not drinking that much in return. I usually have milk in the morning
29I cut up a lemon and squeeze the juice into a pitcher and fill it up with water so I always have some good tasting water. I drink so much more since doing that.
I dont drink enough coffee to make a difference. Like half a cup max.
30thanks 4 de advice
31il try n follow
Thanks for the article, I'll try to keep it in mind for now and in the future. I pretty much avoid coffee, and when I do drink it, it's decaf for me. I have been cutting back on the soda as I have also stopped eating at night. I've lost some weight from that alone. I'm now trying to have soda at least once a day, hopefully I'll soon have it down to only one every two days or so.
32I've given up on soda.... It's my new years resolution!
