Wild 'n' crazy Bella had a wild 'n' crazy Saturday night — at Target. Woot! Isn't having the store practically all to yourself the best? Making my customary beauty aisle pit stop, I was disturbed by what I saw. While I don't mean to nitpick one of my favorite stores, the new designer makeup collection was a big ol' hot mess, as I'm sure you'll agree. To see what I'm talking about, read more.
What's odd is that at most other stores where sampling is allowed — think Sephora — the testers are nowhere near this nasty. I don't think that's the fault of Target's employees; it seems like people think "big-box store" and take puerile glee in sticking their fingers in the testers. Good thing Purell is sold just a few aisles over, no?

I'll bet some kids had descended upon it earlier.
1gross
2Eeeew... don't test that stuff at target unless you want an infection.
3My Target looked the same way. I was really grossed out.
4Horrible, you'd think they'd clean it up a bit!
5My Target also looks like the same. The only tester I was willing to try out was the Weleda Skin Food, but it was in the container and it wasn't gross to try it out.
6I work at Target and that's one of the areas we're really suppose to keep an eye one. When there's a visit from corp. that's the first thing they look at. Sadly the products from those lines never seem to sell at my store but they're in perfect shape compared to your store : )
7It's complicated to explain but it seems to me, the more upscale the venue, the less mess you see. I can go to Kohls or Victorias Secret (two places right off the top of my head that have samples) and they tend to look nice. I go to CVS and can watch as some little punk decides to make a huge mess, just ripping through the samples with no care but for herself.
I guess there are some who enjoy making a mess.
and it's not just kids, I've seen adults do it too, absolutely no respect for those around them.
8I've never tested anything at Target besides a swipe on my hand to check color. I have to say though, even though Sephora might look cleaner, it doesn't mean the actual products are much better off. I saw a lady the other day (I would guess around my mom's age, in her 50's) trying several lip glosses at Sephora straight from the tube rather than use a tester wand - GROSS!
9My Target is fairly clean when it comes to makeup samples. The only gross thing I've ever seen there was one of the JK glosses. It was oozing all over the place. I didn't even want to touch it.
10groooooooss!
11My Target had the same situation. The sad thing was they had a box of tissue and Q-tips right next to the displays for people to use but of course they were untouched.
Plus I hate the displays for their new lines specially the Pixie line. Its difficult to reach for the actual product behind all of the samples and I have almost burned my hands on the lights before
12Oh and I was recently at a Walgreens and I saw some girl take a L'Oreal Color Juice tube of gloss out of the display, try on the gloss and then stick it back as if it had never been used. I was completely grossed out. I wanted to tell an employee but of course I couldn't find one
13Umm yup my Target looks like same...
14WHY OH WHY would you stick something ON YOUR LIPS that someone JUST stuck their finger in. At Sephora they have disposable q-tips for sampling and it doesn't look like they were available here at all which is problem number 1.
15I go to this Target in Westchester, NY and to tell you the truth I barely look at the beauty because it is a disaster (ok...I still look but I may not buy). I was so excited when these lines hit the stores but their displays are not appealing at all. I love Target as a whole but I think some people have no respect, the are just messy and they don't care. I know you need testers, but I won't be touching that stuff.
16Testers just give me the willies. Period.
I don't care if it's Target or Sephora or Macy's. They are all nasty, germy, yucky things because there will always be one person who won't use the Q-Tips or tester sticks... but will just pick the lipstick up and swipe it on.
Ew!!!!
17I used to work at Target and typically our cosmetics sections was clean and orderly. I think we had more issues with people putting things back where they found them (so incompetent) as opposed to using the testers for art class on the gondolas and planogram strips. Every once in a while we would have to clean up a mess, but not often. I think it depends on who walks into the store and what their manners are.
18*I should say people NOT putting things back where they found them...
19My Sephora is pretty icky- all the teenagers go after school and on wknds and make the place a filthy mess. I went to a lovely invite only event for the 20% off last Sat that started 2hrs before the store opened and it was like a whole new world . . I actually felt safe using testing products (with applicators and sanitation of course!). My local Target is disgusting, everyone there has like 8 children and they all run through the make-up samples. People should be more observant of their children, and themselves haha. Enough said.
20Nasty!
21Yuck! But I'm not surprised...Target isn't a cosmetics store like Sephora, so I'm sure this kind of thing isn't exactly a priority. Plus, they're not used to having testers of the cosmetics, so they may not have realized how disgusting it would quickly become...
22Yeah, the pictures above just about sums it up at my Target cosmetic isle. Hpw ppl use tester cosmetics on thier lips and eyes is beyond. I'm a germaphobe and thought of using testers makes me
!!
23*How ppl use tester cosmtics on thier lips and eyes is beyond me.
24Ewwwwwwwww. There is no way I'd ever use a product sample that was sitting out, knowing that people have probably had their germs all up in it. I'd rather buy something that ends up not working out than even touch those testers.
25I was disappointed in the collection but not for the same reasons.
26nasty.
27Yup - like everyone else is saying...my Target beauty isles look the same! Oh well...I never try makeup on in stores anyways because I hate germs and have seen others and their nastiness!
28Eek
29I've never seen a makeup aisle in that kind of state in any of the UK's equivilents to Target. Woah
30Yuck! I very rarely use testers (except fragrance) because the germ issue creeps me out. Definetly wouldn't test something that looks like that. It's so sad that people feel entitled to be destructive.
31Ugh. I don't even know how people can do that. But I do know that it's one reason that I prefer stores like Sephora and MAC - everything is clean and neatly displayed and people don't treat it like their own finger-painting project.
32weird, my target's area always looks spotless! the jemma line is amazing!
33The Sephora near me always has disgusting testers. If it hasn't been destroyed by grubby fingers, it's so old it's got condensation inside the clear parts of the container.
I never use testers, except for perfume.
34The Target near me (in NC) was horrible like the pictures also. I wanted to check out the new products but the area was so gross I didn't feel like looking anymore.
35My target hardly had anything on it's shelves this weekend
but that is pretty gross. Even at
Sephora, I get a little paranoid about trying the testers, but at least they have a more "cleaner" system.
36I was thinking, what's the big deal? My target looks the same..oh right it should be clean...
37I agree with the 8 kids per adult ratio-mine is the same. Every time I leave Target I'm like UGHIHATEKIDS. I don't really.
Good idea to go on a sat. night! I will have to try that.
38Beautelicious, we're neighbors! Our Targets are horrid. Between disgusting displays, and never restocking, you might as well order online.
39The makeup area in the Target near me looked exactly the same last weekend. It really turns me off to products when the testers look so disgusting. I don't understand why people have to be so gross and make such a mess.
40My target looks like this too. Someone had also spilled a soda over the eyeshadows, and it had been there long enough to stickify into syrup.
41Mine looks just like that if not worse. But my Target is so ridiculously busy that I just assumed that was it. There is a general disheveledness among the throngs of people.
I think it's because no one is watching you at Target. You can mess things up without someone dressed in all black with an earpiece staring at you.
42Thats effing GNARLY!
I see this sort of thing a lot at Target here, but our Targets are pretty low on the department store ladder in Australia (one or two above BigW). I'm reminded of a discount store makeup counter.
43Even at Sephora I test most products on the back of my hand. I'll put foundation on my face, but I don't think it's worth it to put lip or eye shadow on my face. My hand is close enough to the color of my face for me decide whether I want to buy it or not.
44ick - I hate testers - yuck! I don't even like to buy a product unless it's tightly sealed in some type of packaging so I know nobody's tried it out!
45The exact same thing happened at my Target. It was b-a-d!
46They're like savages smearing on war paint.
47That is pretty gross. I don't think I would be testing anything from there!
48I totally agree brandysbug, I don't even buy the product unless it is tightly sealed. Also I don't touch the testers at any stores, even Sephora. There are so many germs to be transferred.
49Oh yeah. The Target testers are nasty. What freaks me out more is when I see someone actually using them.
