Whether light, dark, orangey, or slightly berry-toned, red lips are popping up all over. That's because red lips never go out of style. Looking for tips to help you get this look right? Over the next few days I'll be featuring all you ever wanted to know about applying this bright color — just in time for the holidays. Time to feel confident about stepping out in red.

When it comes to the most complementary way to wear red lips, it's all about the undertones. Are you cool or warm? If you don't know, take my color quiz to help you find out.
If you're warm with olive or yellow undertones, choose a lipstick with orange or brown tones. (Think brick red or fire-engine red.) If you're cool with pinkish or reddish undertones, pick a red lipstick with blue or pink tones. Don't try to match your lipstick to your red clothing. Red is a hard color to duplicate, and you can end up looking overdone. Tomorrow, I'll share some specific colors for cool-toned complexions.

I'm wearing a red lip today!
1I don't like red on anyone.. gimme a nice pale pink
2I love a soft red lip, but I don't wear enough make up on a daily basis to pull it off.
3wow its like Bella 'red' my mind today ( ha ha ha ha)
4I was just thinking about this.
I want a nice bluish based red (I prefer a drugstore one, since I wont blow alot of money on it cause I dont know how much Idwear it)
Anyone got any suggestions from CG/Maybelline/Loreal/ etc?
I am cool toned...with hair the color of Audrinas!
Sigh. A few years ago I had the perfect "red" for my skintone: Bodyography's MC Berry. It was the right balance of browns and blues in a red (kind of cranberry, I think), and I got more compliments wearing that shade. Sadly, when I bought that shade a couple of months ago, the formulation seems to have changed- now it's more brownish orange (no hint of any kind of berry)! I'd love to find a comparable shade.
5I wish I was one of those people that can pull off a red lip, but it just never seems to look right on me. So I stick to my frosty pale pink.
6Missyd, I have the same coloring.. I've bought three in the last week. CG classic red (sort of hot pink red), Revlon certainly red (bright, so you have to blot), and my favorite so far has been Loreal drumbeat red. You might look great with their "true red" too. I'm on a red lipstick kick right now... still looking for that perfect red. I notice light red lipgloss looks fantastic on me.
7yeah that's funny, thats what turned me on to a red lip too! I bought the CG Wet Slicks AmazeMint in the red color, and LOVED it!
.
8Thanks so much for the tips! I think I will go look at that Loreal Drumbeat Red after work
Red is a classic, but I'm not sure those particular pictures are the best way to change anyone's mind. In each pic, the red in question is not very flattering, at least on my computer.
9Sorry, all three of those pictures look sorta terrible to me and just make me want to stick to my berry hues
10I'm not a big fan of the red lip, but I do love Clinique Angel Red...it's blue-based and more of a cranberry-red shade. It's the only one I'll wear.
11All those ladies are wearing the wrong shade of red for their skintone.
12Great tips, everyone! I'm working on some posts for cool-toned and warm-toned reds, so thanks for the suggestions.
13Audrina's looks the best, but yeah, none are quite right...personally I love red though, I wear it at least three times a week.
14Whoo I love the red lip! I stayed away for a while 'cause I didn't think they looked good on tanned skin, plus my lips are a bit full so they reeally draw attention.. but I've found my HG red, Mac Dubonnet.
It looks almost berry-ish on the site but it's a really nice
brick red.
My personal tip is to go all out on cheap lipstick (NYC) and when you find what looks best, just match it with the more high-end stuff. But with that I actually carry NYC Sheer Red with me more often..
15I love red lipsticks! MAC Russian Red is a true classic, but I like to experiment with other shades - though never in combination wtih red clothes!
16My favorite red lipstick is MAC Mystic...I love it because it has a matte finish and stays on a long time
17I can't picture myself with red lipstick. My lips are already full, I don't want to attract too much attention with them.
I might take Kadbunny's advice though.
18How do you tell if it is a blue-based red? I love Super star by Jane Cosmetics.
19Choose? I have to CHOOSE?
Nonsense, when it comes to red, I love them all! Its all a matter of the effect I want or what else is going on face and clothing wise.
A lot of shades that suit people so well never work on me, (all those "nude" shades look like mud on my face, and the warmer ones look like clay.)
..... red is one I can wear - orange or blue, it just gives a different look.
20Some personal favorites, from both ends of the tone spectrum:
NARS Heat Wave and Shanghai Express
Chanel London Bus Red
MUFE M120
MUFE L80
MAC Miss Dish
MAC Carnal (though this was better on me as a redhead, not as good with black-brown hair).
Those are some off the top of my head that I know by name, and adore.
21Nars Flaming Dust is a universally flattering not so heavy fun red!
22Ooh yes, like that one too actually! I know that one..
23I can't wait to see some "warm" options. I used to be confused and assumed I was cool toned because I have black hair, but I'm Latina so my skin is olivey (maybe slightly pale in the winter but I am always this color, just a little bit darker in the summer) so now I know I'm a 'warm'
.
I think I like Lancome, Nars, Estee Lauder, and Chanel make up brands in general, maybe Clinique. When it comes to the drugstore it's all about L'Oreal and Revlon!
I hope to see some related shades in Bella's next post. Thanks again bella!
24Shu Uemura Red 165 looks good on all skin tones and can build you can make it sheer or layer it to make it richer. I also just bought Bobbi Brown in Red (semi-matte) and it looks good on my fair complexion, yet it is bold!
25If you're looking for an inexpensive, beautiful red for cool tones try NYX's Snow White. After trying a lot of different brands (from drugstore all the way up), this one is by far my favorite. Not only is the color beautiful (a true red), but the forumula is creamy, goes on well and lasts forever. It also doesn't fade to a weird pinkish/fuschia color (like a lot of the CG reds do). I picked up three tubes a few weeks ago on Cherry Culture for 2.00 dollars a piece, which is a complete steal.
