With the holidays coming up, you want to look festive. My advice? Ditch the reindeer sweater and wear red lipstick instead. As a general guideline, you'll look best wearing this bold hue if you figure out the undertones in your skin to help guide you along the way.
If you're cool-toned, you probably look better in silver jewelry and certain reds. Take a look at some of my tips and a widget below:
- When choosing for a cool-toned red, look for blue-based reds. Names like garnet, berry, cherry, and wine often suggest cooler shades.
- Yellow teeth? Cool-toned reds will help neutralize the dinginess. Go ahead, have another glass of red wine.
- Are you a brunette, a flaming bright redhead, or a platinum blonde? Chances are that bluish-reds will look great on you. Also, deeper skin tones look great in these shades.

Thanks this is me!
1I'm on the right track, just bought the first 2 last week.
2Though I am warm (yellow-) toned myself, some tips here are still useful. So thanks.
3Niice! I'm interested in trying some of these!
4Thank you, thank you, thank you.
It's all too hard not to find orange-red and RED-red lipstick or the dark berry colors that look too harsh on pale, cool-toned skin.
5I love Nars Flaming Dust I was suprised how well it went with my brown skin!
6I've been thinking about adding Afghan Red to my collection of reds - I definitely fall under the "cool" category!
7I have fair, cool-toned skin, but I very fairly go for red lips. They're just not me. But when I do, the one and only shade I'll use is Clinique Different Lipstick in Angel Red. It's a blue-based cranberry-red and it's so pretty (looks a little like that Vincent Longo shade above, maybe not as dark though).
But other than that, red lips are not for me.
8thank you so much Bella! I love red lipstick, and I always worry that the shade I wear doesn't look good on me. I've tried to figure out what colors are in my skin, but I never figured it out before. this told me exactly what I needed to know, and now I know I do have blue-based skin. I'm totally loving that Too-Faced lipstick!
9such o coincidence, i read you once in two months (sorry, don't have time for more) and just today i was rading my make-up box (it's huge) and saw my red lipstick and it was a big orange and i though i need something with blue subtones and now i read this. you made me go out and buy some good red lipstick
look out superdrug
10I just found the most amazing cranberry red gloss today from Loreal. The HIP line, brilliant gloss in "enticing". It is stunningly gorgeous. I am in love with the color!
11Thanks for listing cool-toned shades. I have a really hard time finding a good blue-red.
12I really want to try that NARS shade. I've just warmed up my hair from dark brown to a chestnut and I'm looking for something slightly darker than MAC's Russian Red so it doesn't clash as much.
