Remember that episode of Sex and the City when Carrie gets an enormous pimple on the train ride to San Francisco? Ugh, I felt for her. Since adult acne is definitely not high on my list of Martha Stewart-style "good things," I rely on antiblemish products and oil-free creams to help keep the bumps at bay.
So, for this week's Beauty Mark It challenge I'm thinking blemish control. Which products do you love and which ones do you hate when it comes to reducing pimples and oil production on the skin? Just follow the link above and review, review, review. I'll feature my three favorites here next Tuesday.

Hogan
Christian Dior
Dune
Nice! I'm always looking for a good blemish blaster. I was blessed with acne prone skin starting at 13 and now at almost 25.
What I'd really love to see is a review of proactiv (I can't find it in the reviews). I really wonder if it's worth the money. I use the Acne Free system now with ok results, it'll work really well when I fist start it, but I still get awful flare ups once in awhile.
1Persa-Gel and Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment, Power-Foam Wash. Both work great to control the oil and breakouts for me.
2I use Clean and Clear's Foaming Face Wash and Astringent--it leaves my skin feeling clean without overdrying it!
3That Mario Badescu pink stuff in the jar ( I forget the name) works very well
4i have a zit on my face right now!!!!!!!!!!!!
but it will be gone by tomorrow im
going to burn it off
5I use philosophy's on a clear day adult acne serum. It works pretty well if I use it regularly but I still get the occasional break out that I can't get rid of
6psychobabble- i use proactiv and have been using it for a few years now. i still break out when i'm about to get my period (mainly just a few on my chin) but usually they go away after a couple of day and the rest of the month my skin is clear.
7Does anyone have reviews of the Zeno thing? or anything similar? I've been thinking of getting one, that and the Clarisonic, but for the price I'd like to have some honest feedback first.
8Clean'n'Clear BP or the OXY 10 stuff. Proactiv works wonders for my skin though and I also love Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid to keep my pores clean.
9dermalogica overnight clearing gel, works beautifully on my problem zone around my chin where I tend to break out when my hormones are wacky.
I use it after I apply my moisturizer. It's great for my oiler oily (chin, nose, forehead). But my cheeks tend to be drier and the gel will dry them out too much it I use it there. But it's def a life saver for my t-zone. I highly recommend it!
10Love Mary Kay's Acne Treatment, hate Clearasil Pads (OUCH!!!)
11I bought my son Proactive last year-he is 13 and coming down with acne badly- and it has been wonderful for him- literally, it has taken his acne down to half of what it was. I added the Mary Kay Acne Tratement I talked about above to his routine this year and all the bumps are almost gone! I can tell when he doesn't use his sytem for ONE day....
His system that works best for him(big pores, normal not oily skin):
Noxema face wash followed by St.Ive's Facial Scrub(My Gawd this is awesome stuff- can we have a love post just one this product??lol!)and then the Proactive moisturizer(fantastic stuff) and finally the MK Acne Treatment on his t-zone.
He is actually pretty good at remembering to do his routine every morning and night
12I have giant pores and St. Ive's facial scrub is the only thing that keeps my pores clean, that and the MK Acne Solution I keep talking about are what keep me from being a big pimply face myself, Lol
13something i can actually comment on : )
i have horrid skin; oily combination skin, lots of hormones flying around (im 19) especially during PMS time;
my skin's been pretty much clear for two-ish years now (Except for breakouts @ pms time)
face wash: Herbalism by lush (i dont know why but this thing works wonders for me) (daily)
exfoliator: st ives apricot scrub [blackheads & blemishes] (daily; probably not the best idea)
moisturizer: clinique moisture surge
i dont use both meds every day because i dont want to kill my skin BUT:
night time medication: retin-a-micro (dries my face up; hence the moisturizer)
morning medication: benzoyl peroxide & clindamycin phosphate combo cream.
biweekly face masks:
sephora peel off purifying mask for oily skin
lush cupcake
complicated eh ? keeps my skin clear though. so i suppose its worth it.
14It's like whose skin is the worst contest. My skin is ultra sensitive, and I can get zits by doing literally anything (not getting good sleep, not washing face thoroughly, stress, etc). I use Benzoyl Peroxide and Retinol along with dermatologist recommended skin care products such as Avene. When skin gets out of control which is quite often, I make a trip to a doctor to get all the pimples popped and to get all the oils sucked out of my skin. I really envy people with naturally beautiful skin.
Justanerd, St. Ives scrub is really harsh for face I think.
15I use Clean And Clear Oxygenating Facial wash or scrub after exfoliating with a gentle daily exfoliator.
Following that I slather on a light moisturiser. Any zits that crop up I kill with Clearasil zit cream.
16Candace, I've got a Zeno and have had great success with it... worth every penny! It really does shrink and dry zits within just a few treatments. The only complaint I have with it is sometimes it makes my skin a little too dry, which makes the blemish harder to disguise. Also girls, take note that the Zeno's metal tip (which heats up to kill the bacteria that causes zits) does get increasingly warmer on your skin during treatment, which can be a little off-putting at first (but nothing too painful!) I'm gonna write a review for it soon!
17For my everyday routine, I use Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle scrub every morning (although i may be over-exfoliating) and Cetaphil at night. I use also Origins' Spot Remover blemish treatment which is awesome and cheap!
Ive tried hundreds of products since my teen years, and the thing that I find works the best....WATER!
I take a washcloth, run it under the hottest water I can stand and hold it on the pimple until the cloth feels cold...and then repeat it a few more times until bed... the water dries the little pesk up and the heat takes the redness away...
In the morning, Its practically non-existent...and definitely not as noticeable as it was the night before.
I get the worst blind pimples...the ones that hurt under the skin...and I swear by this simple routine
18I'm a huge believer in getting facials at my dermatologists office!! They clear my skin up and make it soooo smooth for about a month afterwords (basically until its that time of the month, again). Also, I use retin-A micro at night about every two days, wash with cetaphil (normal to oily skin) cleanser and use dermalogica moisturizer at night. In the mornings I use finacea (I have the onset of rosecea but it also helps reduse the left over marks from previous acne and treats acne) and occasionally I use clindagel (from the dermatologist) on those huge pimples. And I take doxycycline, oral, 50mg, once/day (be careful to make sure to drink LOTS of water with this or itll hurt your esophagus... learnt that the hard way). Also, as a side note: i'm 24 about to turn 25, have combo skin that is starting to get drier and I used to suffer from REALLY bad acne when I was younger (once someone asked if I had the chickenpox!!!!), now i have the occasional deep acne cyst and just a bunch of left over red marks... OK, hope that helps! Overall, I really recommend finding a very good dermatologist... one that actually takes their time with you and discusses different treatment options.... OK, thanks to those that stuck through reading all this
19Oh, and I'm on birth control, which has been the savior of my skin in the "chickenpox" acne phase...
20La Roche Posay A.I. is the best for me. I use it whenever I feel a pimple come up or I have an established whitehead. It's not 100% perfect, but it shrinks the pimple. When you feel a new one coming up and put in on there, it basically absorbs all the goop from it or something. Also works great when you've popped a pimple to prevent scarring. Sometimes when you've popped a pimple and you put this stuff on, it soaks even more white stuff out. Haha it's gross but it shows me it's working
Best stuff and lasts ages..!
21LADIES! if you need make-up reviews, www.makeupalley.com has the most product reviews!!!
PS: I use st ives apricot scrub and ddf 10% glycolic acid toner
22St. Ives Apricot Scrub Blemish and Blackhead Control is a great one
23Honestly, I think breakouts have more to do with hormones then the products one uses to make breakouts disappear. With that in mind, I've been taking spironolactone once a day since I was 21 and my skin has been beautiful ever since. I SWEAR BY IT. I also think it is important to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to prevent breakouts. And if your skin is oily, stick to using a milk based cleanser and very mild toner. I use to make the mistake of using products that were too abasive for my skin and it caused even worse breakout.
For oily skin, I'd recommend - Comfort Zone, the milk and Comfort Zone, tonic, in addition to spironolactone
24oh yeah, i also use the Clarsonic once a day. It makes my skin super soft and smooths out my complexion.
25Proactiv!
26I swearrrrr by Philosophy's on a clear day face wash, and definately their syrum for those major zits that won't go away. The syrum is def not something to use every day, though, as it can dry out your skin pretty easily.
I also use Bare Escentuals Rare Minerals blemish therapy... although to be completely honest, I'm not even sure it works as much as I want it to in my head!
27If anyone knows any amazing products for sensitive skin that gets red they will be my cosmetics goddess. I also need to learn to sleep on my back because I get horrible spots on the one side of my face that I sleep on even when I change my sheets every 2 days.
28everything with tea tree oil is excelent
29people who know me know that a zit can literally ruin my day
30i will not go out when i have a big one
it almost ruined a whole weekend trip to NYC before
it's just terrible
i stand by clinique and shiseido acne treatments...but frankly, time heals all wounds! nothing will make it go away as fast as i want!
I have dry acne prone skin. I get these awful cycstic pimples that won't go away for a month and then leave scars for a year. Does any one know of a good scar removal cream that actually works?
31i have extremely sensitive skin. if a strand of hair touches my skin i could get a pimple. so i've experimented with everything.
for spot-treatment blemishes and pimples, benefit cosmetics boo-boo zap! is the best thing i have found in terms of quick healing.
to use often, if benzoyl peroxide doesn't do much for you (such as proactive), so far dr. brandt's pore effect clarifying cream is the best daily thing i've ever used.
32i don't get breakouts or humongo pimples but whenever i feel a zit coming along, i make sure to use tea tree oil/aloe vera/honey (kills bacteria and heals wounds)/proactiv's mask...my mum tells me i'm too young to be using all those things (i don't use all those things at ONCE, mind you; those are my options :)but i have sensitive skin and if it works on me it can most likely be baby mild for anyone older than me...
i don't use all of proactiv's line because i don't need to except for the mask; i use little spots on a zit and in the morning...
33IT'S GONE!
i recommend concealer that says its use is too take the redness out for the people who've talked about those angry red marks. i've heard that they are efficient!
When it is that time of the month I get this gigantic zit in the same place on my chin month after month. I'm not sure what is up with the one spot, but it's only one zit, so I can't really complain. I have super sensitive skin, so when it comes I just put a hot wash cloth on it, and then I put clean and clears spot treatment on it. Once that is dried, I make sure to put some face moisturizer on the spot, or it will dry out too much, and become worse.
34Mario Badescu drying lotion. The pink stuff in the jar. It's awesome!
35Thanks for all the input about Proactiv, I've been going back and forth about trying it for a long time. I tried AcneFree because it was less expensive and seemed similar, but I'm just not getting the results I want. I think I'll bite the bullet and give it a shot!
I do own the Thermaclear (like the zeno) and I really love it. When I have a big nasty zit that is just about to come to a head, it works wonders. It is a little painful (feels like a slight pinprick)but there are two heat settings, the lower one is barely noticeable. I have found that it doesn't work well on the awful under the skin zits that stick around for weeks. Those are my main problem, but once it comes to a head... it gets zapped!
A good concealer I use is Benefit's Galactic Shield, that contains salicylic acid. Just go light with it because it will make your skin peal if you use too much!
36lin lin - you don't have to sleep on your back if you get a satin pillow! My hairdresser recommended it and I swear by it, not just for your face (acne, wrinkles, it prevents them all) but your hair. I've been using satin pillowcases for about 3 months and my hair doesn't get as greasy and neither does my face.
For Hannah, I'm in the same boat. My acne is always cystic and painful, either on my forehead or my chin. I use Mario Badescu Drying Cream (the pink stuff, Drying Lotion, works great on normal pimples but not on cystic or unerupted pimples) on it, it smells like cucumbers and aloe which is nice. It doesn't work overnight or anything, but if I use that religiously it will be gone or erupted in a week. (I'm interested to try the hot water method above though!)
For scars I use acid peels. No need to get a fancy one, Neutrogena makes great ones. They are great for your skin regardless, super exfoliating, and fades the scar faster.
