Faced with similar products and similar promises, what's a bargain hunter to do? For the sake of comparing apples to apples (instead of a splurge with a steal), I picked up both the Almay and Revlon long-wear eye liners each promising to last 16 hours. I planned a couple days to test these out but, at the end, I'm still undecided. Since everyone has different expectations with makeup, I noted key points about each. To hear my thoughts, read more.
Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner ($7.50)
- Product: Black retractable pencil with a sharpener in the base.
- At application: Flatter, fatter point (even at its sharpest) that glided on well but smudged easily.
- By bedtime: A bit smudged but still very visible.
- Product: Black retractable pencil with a sharpener in the base
- At application: Smaller point required a steadier hand but allowed to get a smaller line super close to the lash line.
- By bedtime: Less smudged, but also less visible.
My conclusion – If you're going for a smoky eye, I think the Revlon gives a more dramatic smudgeworthy appearance but for day-to-day simple lines, Almay may be the better bet for you.

i've heard nothing but good things about revlon's colorstay liner.
1I really like Almay's eye color specific eyeliners, both pencil and liquid. The pencils have a nice consistency and gorgeous multi-tonal colors, but do fade by the end of the day.
2Revlon's colorstay liner is one of the best drugstore items, hands down. I ALWAYS have one in my cosmetics stash!
3I use Revlon Colorstay. I feel like it's the best of both worlds - you get long-lasting, intense color that stays put pretty well, but if you make a mistake, it's not hard to smudge into place with a Q-tip or your finger.
4Thanks for doing this ... I think I will need to go pick up one of those revlon color stay things
5Aren't Revlon and Almay the same company though?
6i love revlon colorstay - it's been one of my staple eyeliners for years now. but now i am curious to try almay's!
7The Colorstay eyeliners might be Revlon's best product. I have three colors already, and I'm planning to get them all.
They should advertise it more.
8i've used colorstay - it was ok. but i dried out fast and became harder to apply. and I totally agree with you about that you can't get as thin of a line with the colorstay.
You've made me curious about Almay... I might have to pick that up.
9I don't really wear eyeliner often but when I have I go for Almay...
10I love Revlon's products. Most of my makeup is Revlon products.
11I love the Colorstay liners! They really do stay on all day. I just wish that they would expand the color options a bit.
I do have Almays eyeliner in Brown Topaz and I love it. It really makes my blue eyes pop and has decent staying power
12Revlon and Almay are actually the same company so no wonder their products are the same and even the same price! The only difference is that Almay tends to lean toward the hypo-allergenic ingredients, although that's not really even a rule anymore. I prefer the Almay because of that but both are good quality.
13Revlon ColorStay eyeline is definitely my go-to eyeliner! I just ran out so I need to buy another one today. I like it because it's very fool-proof and VERY visible.
14I just bought the ColorStay at Duane Reade for $6.11. Saving every dollar counts!
15Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner is such a good product!!!!. I own and use liners by both of these brands, but Revlon's is amazing for long-wearing, true color. Definitely the best drugstore pencil liner that I've tried (and I've tried 'em all)!!!!
16I use the Revlon liner. I really like it. I find it very easy to apply and I love the way it looks. I put it on in the morning and it still looks fantastic at night. I have had issues putting on liner in the past and this one is the best I've used so far.
17i need a new liner badly, and I think I'll be picking up Colorstay
18i use the almay day to day and i am in love with it. it stays on all day and i usually don't have it smudged.
19I did not know that Revlon and Almay were under the same umbrella company so this may actually be true for both of them but I do know that ALMAY'S big thing is that they DO NOT TEST ON ANIMALS. To me that is a huge pro which would make me lean toward any brand - especially if they were comparable to other brands.
20An addendum to Revlon's ColourStay is their same-name dual-ended Eyebrow gel and pencil. Frankly I rarely use the pencil side because the gel does such a great job. It uses a mascara-type wand. The gel is coloured and feels light. No clown eyebrows here!
The results are really nice and natural. You absolutely cannot tell anything was done to them. They just look nicely shaped and evenly coloured. Everything stays where it's supposed to all day and night. LOVE IT.
I've been disappointed with all Almay products I've bought. They didn't perform well.
21I love Almay. I never liked Revlon's because it is too dry for me and tugs at my eyelid. I think Almay has a more variety of blacks and browns for their eyeliners. Plus, its great for contact lens wearers. I pulled this little paragraph from the Almay site about the products that could help with comparison with revlon.
"Almay has been the first hypoallergenic cosmetics brand, the first brand to make 100% fragrance-free products and to disclose all ingredients used, the first brand to perform safety testing for allergy and irritation, the first brand to formulate for contact lens wearers and, you guessed it, the first brand to create cosmetic regimens for specific skin types."
22I own both products and like bella said, Almay is a lot better for the daily look. I tried Revlon's for day rather than my usual purple eyeliner and although it looked good in the morning, by the afternoon it was smudged especially under my eyes. Not really a good look for an afternoon calculus class. So now I actually have day makeup and night makeup.
23i've tried both and i still like the almay liner much better. the revlon liner was heavy and it smudged easily.
24colorstay liner is the BOMB; it's COMPLETELY smudge-proof and visible: i choose it over Make Up For Ever's Aqua Eyes (it smudged during lunch time >.
25I've always found Revlon eyeliners smudge terribly and by the end of the day the lines either halfway down my face or completely disappeared.
