It's hard knowing that many awesome styles on the red carpet are tricky to recreate at home without pricey extensions. Hard . . . but not impossible. Next up, for our latest how-to re-do, we tackled Angelina Jolie's pretty style from the premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
My pal TeamSugar was craving this style so we reinterpreted it for her much shorter, all-natural hair. We took up a collection of bobby pins here at Sugar HQ, and made this wispy look with no gel or spray. See a picture of how it turned out and get my tips to create a similar look at home when you read more.
- Slick all your hair back into a tight ponytail at the nape of your neck.
- Divide out 1/4 of the hair in your ponytail and pull it aside. Loop the small section through the hair tie in the direction of the ponytail (this should create two equal little loops) and pin the excess.
- Take the large section of hair and wrap it around the top and thread it through both loops. Chances are, if your hair is not halfway down your back, you'll run out of that loop before you make it as far as Angelina's. Just pull it through the loops and pin it wherever you end up.
- For a sleek, polished look, finish up with hairspray.
That's Angelina on the left and our very own TeamSugar on the right!

That looks really cute. That would be great for me to wear to work, but I doubt when I do that it will look so good. I like it better on Team Sugar then Angelina.
1*Amazing bone structure not included
.
This post is kind of ironic because in this case cheap clip in ponytail extensions would be easy to use and hide in your natural hair to make a large bun.
2I think it looks great and is a near perfect copycat. The style really highlights TeamSugar's hair color too. It looks so silky!
3This makes me miss my long hair!
4Very nice!
5I'd like her to gain a little more weight. Her weight from a few years ago to now.. is too much lost. Most magazine's say stay skinny, I think she looked amazing more curved.
6"Loop the small section through the hair and tie in the direction of the ponytail (this should create two equal little loops) and pin the excess. "
Why am I not understanding instruction # 2?
7esweet...I am soooo with you. I tried doing it to my hair and I don't get it.
8Thanks for the instructions! I wonder if this would be secure enough for dancing - I usually wear my hair in a typical "bunhead" bun for ballet class, but that gets boring, so this looks like it would be a fun alternative. Since my hair is about as long as Angelina's (and much thicker), I'm pretty sure it'll work!
9Ehhhh Team's hair looks too much like the "donut bun" that so many women in the military wear. I HATE the donut bun.
10Wow, it is almost exactly the same! Love it! I can never do this stuff on my own, though - I am all thumbs!
11yeah, i'm not getting direction #2 either....can you clarify?
12Sorry about that! Take the small section you've divided out and pull the end of your hair to meet the elastic (this forms a loop). However, instead of pulling the end of your hair through the elastic in the direction it's facing (the opposite way of the ponytail), you want to put it over the elastic and pull it through in the direction of the pony tail (it's more like an sideways "8" than a circle now).
13I honestly do not think that looks like Angelinas. It is a fugly style anyway. Buns and such...
14i think you did a great job replicating her style, but when i saw that pic i could not stop wondering how on earth they got her hair so smooth! do they put like pounds of wax/pomade/spray to make it look that smooth and immaculate? literally not one strand of hair out of place?! i never realized even celebrities hair are styled to perfection!
15Eh it's okay.
16my hair is way too short ... but I love wearing it in buns ...
17wish it was longer
It looks great!
18Skye Marie the 13 year old writer not only looks like a younger Angelina Jolie when Angelina was 11, but I just looked at the video blog of Angelina Jolie when she was walking the red carpet with her dad John Voight and Skye Marie the young 13 year old writer of (How To Talk To Teens) even wore her hair the same as Angelina, it was not intentional. Skye Marie looks just like Angelina..
