Experts suggest that you toss your mascara every three months (guidelines here), but that doesn't always happen. Lots of us hang on to mascara longer than that, even when things get clumpy. Yesterday, geeksugar told me about her way to salvage the last bits of mascara.
Running hot water over a closed mascara tube often warms and liquefies clumpy mascara, but geeksugar had little success. Instead, she plugged the sink, let hot water fill it up, and tossed the tightly closed tube in there. A few minutes later, the mascara was — and I quote — "a fabulous, dreamy consistency." So there you have it.

sweet! thanks for sharing
i'm definitely going to give it a try.
1I have a tube at home I could try this on—I almost threw it away today because it's a bit clumpy.
2I have found that a couple of drops of Visine or Clear eyes works for clumpy mascaras. That's what I do; Pour a couple of drops in the tube, swish wand around a little and it all goes creamy again.
3A couple of drops of oil-free eye makeup remover works as well.(L'Oreal's Eye Make-up Remover is my fave!)
4Interesting.
5I should try that ... I have about three mascaras waitin to be tossed out ...
6Wow, that's a really good idea - I can honestly say I've never even though or heard of that before. Thanks!
7I don't think I've ever finished a tube of mascara or had it get dry/hard...I alternate between a couple of different ones and toss them after 3 months or so, whether they're empty or not. I just know you're supposed.
8i tried this today with a mascara i've been meaning to toss. the water from my sink takes awhile to heat, so instead i microwaved a mug of water then i set the tube in the mug for a few minutes as i continued to do my make-up.
great tip!! i hate wasting, especially my beloved mascaras!
9great tip... I'll have to remember that!
10I should pass this tip on to my mum she hates when her mascara gets clumpy.
11I always do this on winter: I go to the kitchen, grab a mug, put water on it and put it on the microwave and almost once a week my father asks "ooh, are you doing coffee?" and I always respond "eer... no" and he sees, kind of with horror as I put the mascara in the mug, in the hot water
