Last night, I was feeling under the weather so my mom recommended I take an epsom salt bath to help ease my achiness. I hadn't used epsom salts since the sprains and strains of my high school athletic career.
But I was hopeful that this old-timey cure would do the trick for my adult flu. Of course, Mom was right. After a good soak with some lavender and cedarwood oils (a recommendation from Mandy Aftel) I felt healed, as if I had come straight out of the Dead Sea.
So, this got me to thinking about other uses for the miracle salts. I did some research, and according to the Epsom Salt Council, there are many beauty benefits to magnesium sulfate. . .as it's known in the world of science. To see what they are, read more.
- Va voom — Epsom salts can give hair body. Who knew?
- What a release — The salts help replenish magnesium in the body, which can make energy levels increase. Which, in turn, can make you look better. A lift in magnesium also relieves stress, increasing serotonin levels and lowering blood pressure. Yay.
- Smooth skin — Not only to the salts deep clean, try massaging handfuls of the crystals on pre-moistened skin for an exfoliating experience.
- Oily no more — To help dry out oily skin and invigorate all other skin types, mix 1/2 teaspoon of epsom salts with your face cleanser and then massage for a mini facial.
- Mask it — For normal to dry skin, whip up a three-ingredient facial mask: Blend 1/4 cup of grated carrot, 1/2 teaspoon of epsom salts, and 1 1/2 teaspoons mayonnaise. Spread over pre-dampened skin, wait 10 minutes, and remove. Next, refer to YumSugar for all other mayo/carrot/salt combos.

Oh neat I had no idea! I have some at home now.
1Srsly?!!? I would be SO scared to rub mayonnaise on my face!
2I totally just ran out of epsom salt. Crap! Oh well, it's a cheapy remedy for my work out soreness!
3I agree with Terry! Yikes!
4I love this stuff.
5I don't think it's that surprising that Epsom Salts increase hair volume, seeings as salt water itself has the same effect. Still, it's good to be reminded since I love the way my hair looks after being in salty sea water.
6Epsom salts are awesome!
7Good to know!
8How are you supposed to use it on your hair? Do you mix it with the conditioner? Spray salt water on after the shower?
9I use epsom salts with a few drops of oil (Arbonne is what I use) on a damp face. Don't rub too hard!!
10how do you use the salts in your hair?
11How would you ingest the salts? Just dissolve them in water?
12A friend did a spa-weekend. She chats with everyone and people love to talk to her and tell her everything. She chatted with one of the women who explained that the bodyscrubs they used at the spa were just bodywash with epsom salts mixed in.
13Epsom salts are a staple in my household. I soak every night before bed in an epsom salt bath. The magnesium really helps to relax you and you easily segue into restful sleep. I buy the 4 lb. bags at Publix. I've used Walgreens brand as well as Walmarts brand. I prefer the granual size of the Publix brand.
14I love Epsom salt. You can also mix it with grape seed oil and essential oil. It makes a great home made salt scrub.
15I have the same questions as a couple of others here. HOW do you use the epsom salt in your hair? And, about how it replenishes the levels of magnesium in your body and increases energy...... like mixing it with water???? Please... do tell.
16Here's what I read about using epsom salts as hair volumizer:
17"Combine equal parts of deep conditioner and epsom salt. Warm in a pan. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse."
About increasing magnesium, I'm assuming it is absorbed through the skin when you soak. I haven't ever seen or heard of anyone ingesting epsom salts. But I could be wrong.
Do not ingest the epsom salt with water or anything unless your constipated. It is a laxative. You will be going to the bathroom every 15 minutes for a day! Throw some in your bath and your body will soak it in.
18Thanks!
