It seems to me that the majority of makeup wearers opt for the fairly standard hues of brown or black. Pretty, but a bit boring, nonetheless. For New Year's Eve I went bold with a bright blue liner, and this got me to thinking about the rainbow of colors available beyond traditional shades.
While reds, oranges, and yellows are often saved for the runway or high fashion/high drama looks, here are some tips on how to wear shades on the cooler end of the spectrum:
- Bold blue: We know that blue-based red lipsticks can help neutralize the yellow cast in teeth, and did you know that blue eyeliner can help make your eyes pop? Who wouldn't want a little twinkle, eh? Recently, I chose a deeper hue for a sophisticated look with a richer contrast, applying Wet 'n' Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Blue ($1.49) to the waterline of both my upper and lower lash lines. After smudging and setting with a navy shadow, I was off for evening cocktails. My friend said I looked well-rested. Wink wink.

- White: Apply white liner to the inner v and lower waterline to open eyes and brighten. Try Shu Uemura Eye Light Pencil White ($18), which has a white matte shade on one side and a pearl shade on the other.
- Go green: To make hazel or green eyes pop, try an emerald green shade like Tarte EmphasEyes High Definition Eye Pencil in Green ($18).
- Purple power: If you have deep brown, green, or hazel eyes, a purplish shade of liner will make them stand out even more. Apply L'Oreal Le Kohl Eyeliner in Le Plum ($7.95) and watch your eyes light up.

Seriously Bella, get out of my head.
Today I decided I was feeling rather bold, and put on some bright blue eyeliner (I'd never used it before because the pencil looks more 'electric blue' than I thought it'd be) - it's great! And it does bring a very nice, light change from my usual dark green/blue/purple liners.
(also, I get Bowie's Sound and Vision stuck in my head every time I say "electric blue". There you go.)
1That's great, Advah. I love it!

3the other day i
4used some purple
liner, love it!!
think i'm gonna
buy more risky
liners.
I love my bright purple eyeliner. I don't use it a whole lot, but when I do it looks really cool. I wear glasses too, so the purple doesn't smack everyone in the face right away.
5I rarely wear liner unless it's a white in the corner of my eye to brighten them up. I hate pulling on my top eye lid and "stretching" my skin. Weirds me out...
6And what about us blue eyed ladies?!
7I'd love to use more purple on my eyes ... but the color looks weird against my dark brown skin.
8I've been using Bobbi Brown's "Black Plum Ink" gel liner nearly every day for a wile now. It doesn't scream (or even shout) purple, but I like to think it subtly brings the hazel out in my eyes. It totally reads as a brownish-blackish color though, so the purple punch is kindof my little secret.
9Well, blue-eyed ladies. . . I love blue eyes with bronze-toned liners, but since we're moving beyond brown here, green and blue liners would be complementary only if you choose a deeper hue. If it's too light, it could wash your lovely eyes out.
10I luv white eyeliner on the inner corners. Purple I tried but it wasn't for me. You could see circles under my eyes and everything
11I'm all for color liners. I bought both of the Urban Decay 24/7 liner sets before Christmas. Best colors ever!
12i've always loved colourful shadows and liners. it's nice that what i like has come into style! haha
13I have hazel eyes and love using plum, navy and dark green liners with neutral shadows.
14Absolutely. I want to buy some of UD's 24/7 eyeliners also, the colors look gorgeous. The only bright eyeliner I have is from MUFE - a turquoise color - and I love it.
For blue eyes, green, purple, gold and silver bring out the color.
15Brown liner is my staple (black used to be in my high school days when I thought I was so cool, but now that's too severe and only for certain occasions). I've been using navy, purple, and teal liners quite a lot lately. I think that teal is my favorite. Just a warning: green liners (and I also notice this with navy) can make your eyes look more bloodshot (opposites on the color wheel), so don't try it on an overly tired day!
16I always wear a warm brown. I was just thinking yesterday that I have fairly neat hazel eyes but I think they just get lost. This post was perfect! Thanks
17I love colorful eyeliners! I wear blue everyday and its my favorite.
18I'm all about my L'Oreal Lineur Intense liquid liner in plum. It's the perfect color to bring out my green eyes. And I'm obsessed with liquid liner!
19Aimeeb, if you wanted to rock a colored liner, I think copper or topaz shades look fab against blue eyes
20I just bought Stash, from Urban Decay's 24/7 glide on eyeliner line, it's the best! It's kind of an olive green so I can get away with lining my lower lid with it also. It's good for when you don't want to do black because it's dark enough to wear by itself without being too dramatic. I just line my top and bottom lid, then smudge it out. Good for those girls on the go or like me, always rushing out of the house!
21Oh, I use MAC's Indigo eye pencil and I LOVE the way they seem to make my brown eyes pop. But yeah, I end up using a variety of eyeshadows as liners, with an angled brush. I'm particularly partial to teals.
22I respectfully disagree that green shadows/liners make green eyes pop! I have green eyes and find that reds and purples are the best colors for my eye color (using green tends to make my eyes look more hazel, which I don't care for).
23maybe I'm wayyyy off the mark on this one, but I have pale pale, almosy greyish blue eyes, and I used alot of mauves and rose tones and it makes them look super blue. Am I wrong about this?
24.......
25Thanks Bella and Em.
I have very light blue eyes so I need to look around for some blues and green hues for myself...copper too.
26missyd I do too although I've never tried that shade liner on myself.
27I always wear black but occasionally I layer emerald green over the top to bring out the green in my eyes.
28The green liner that I have also smudges a lot so sometimes i use it as cream eyeshadow!
I love using blue eyeliner when I want a pop of color. I pair it with neutral eye shadows.
