My sister has a full-time job, twin boys, and not a whole lot of time to spend on her hair. So, she asked me to help her create a look that was fun, easy, and — most importantly — fast.
Since braids and twists are trendy and flattering on just about everyone, I used that concept as my inspiration. And as she worked from home over the holidays, I got out the basics: a brush, some hairspray, and a ponytail holder. Here's what we did:
- Spray hair with hairspray to create a smooth surface. Next, pull hair back into a low ponytail.
- Using your fingers to separate hair above ponytail holder, create a hole.
- Lift ponytail up and over ponytail holder, right into the hole you created. Push hair all the way through.
- Pull ponytail outwards to tighten, and you're finished.
- Optional: Loosen twist by lightly separating with fingers for a softer effect. Add a barrette à la Nicole Kidman for a fancy finish.

just made the pony tail at work. haha
1Does anyone else remember the commercials for the gadget that did this??!
2Topsy Tail!! That was it. Hahahaha.
3this was so easy...and it looks great !!! yay
4My grandfather made me a 'make do' Topsy Tail. It was a wire coat hanger that he twisted to make the loop, then welded it so it wouldn't catch in my hair.
I need to find that thing.
5awww starangel that was so sweet of him to do
6That's really sweet, starangel. I remember Topsy Tail. However, this hairstyle reminds me of the FLDS polygamist women....
7hahahaha topsy tail. ah the good old days!
8I had that red topsy tail contraption! haha
definitely the good
old days...
9aww this is really usefull!!and yeah starangel that is so sweet.
10I actually ordered the Topsy tail on Amazon last year and I love it!!!!
11Have to agree with fluer here... it's a little matronly for my taste.
12I wish I could do this style, but my hair is too short. I am growing it out though, so I'll keep this one in mind!
13i have a friend who does this, but just with the top half of her hair. it looks really cute!
14fleurfairy, I thought the same exact thing. It reminds me of Big Love.
15i have to be very honest. i think it was so sweet of bella to take the time to try and help her sister, but the end result looks very outdated. and not in a trendy 'old hollywood glam' way. idk what it is...but i think her sister could use something more MODERN.
16I'm not feelin this. I wore the hairstyle way back when, and maybe it's cute on kids, but as an adult it reminds me of an Amish woman's hairstyle.
17CKeller, I think the key is to wear it a bit messy. I can't wait to try this. I really need to mix up my hairstyles.
18this style looks great HALF UP, but i'm not a fan of the whole ponytail being pulled through. you can do this style and then bobby pin the pony tail under for a cute bun too.
19I think this is cute - It is a bit matronly for a daily style, but wearing it once in a while would be great, to change-up your hair a bit.
20I wore this when I was 12...its too Little House on the Prairie for me now...I think...
21haha i used to wear this when i was a little kid too but its still cute
22HATE it.
23So that's how it's done.
24I love how they introduce this hair style as being so new and innovative. It makes me feel so old, to see these trends coming back into style.
And I totally had the Topsy Tail doll. Her only purpose was to have hair you could style with a special colored topsy tail thing. It was kinda lame, in hindsight.
25Aw man, I'm late on the Topsy Tail reminiscing. My grandma but one for me, I only used it once though. Never again!
26oops i meant "bought" not "but"!
27I begged my Mom to buy a Topsy Tail for me when I was in late elementary school. When she finally caved and ordered it over the phone (pre-online shopping, woo), we were both surprised by how cheapo it was - just a thin piece of red plastic. I usually just followed the steps Bella outlined here instead of using the plastic contraption because it pulled at my hair!
28for my freshman year of high school I went to a private school that boasted the topsy tail inventer as an alum. lol, apparently she made millions of the damn thing.
29I have always loved this look but have never been able to perfect it because of my profuse amount of hair - thanks Bella for giving me easy instuctions!

32I always liked this look and actually bought the Topsy Tail...but it's not a look for layered curly hair. I don't think I would do it now that I'm older, as I think it would be matronly, not charming.
33I actually learned how to do this when I was a little girl. My grandmother gave me a tiny hair set intended for my American Girl doll (Kirsten!) and it had a book on how to do all the styles that could be done on an AG doll. It came with a Topsy Tail-like contraption and since my hair was so fine I could use it on my hair too! I've lost it since then however.
34I do this with my hair a lot. It is a nice change from a plain ole' ponytail....
