In college, I wanted highlights but couldn't afford them. So I got the brilliant idea to give them to myself. Never mind that I had never tried to do so before. I was confident that it couldn't be that hard. Ha! An hour into my project, I looked like Cheetara from the Thundercats, all stripes and blotches. It was not a good look, to say the least, and I wound up spending $50 (to my student budget, a princely sum) to have a stylist fix the mess. Since then, I've been scared straight. It's only salon stuff for me.
Now, the Boston Globe reports on similar DIY disasters. People are pinching pennies by trimming their own bangs, coloring their hair, and mending their own clothes. I'm all for it, but unfortunately, a few people in the story have had to have their mistakes professionally fixed. Has something like this happened to you before?

I decided to cut my own hair the other night (4 days in bed with the flu made be a bit cabin feverish). I got a bit over excited and my 'trim' turned into a bob :/ I didn't even have a comb. I'm not too annoyed though; it looks a bit too much like the triangle (curly hair and no layers) cut I had in junior school, but it's nice to have something different. Plus I still can't decide on a haircut so I won't go to the hairdresser for another couple of months.
1It's not hard for me to color my own hair at home since it's just a one process and pretty hard to mess up. I've trimmed my own bangs too and yes I admit sometimes they haven't come out out uhhhh perfect but I can usually make it work.
A hair cut on the other hand I would never ever attempt. Luckily I have some friends who are stylists and have done their own thing out of their salons at home and only charge me maybe $20.
2I've almost always done my own colour. I also cut my own hair, but mainly because I can't find a decent stylist around here. When I'm in London I have a great stylist and always make an appointment (ironically even when the exchange was lousy it was still cheaper than the "mom" do's I'd get around here, ugh!) At this point I'm growing my hair out, so its a very easy trim. Oh, and I also used to be a hair/makeup stylist so it does come easier to me than most. But don't let that fool you, most stylists will take crazy chances with their hair!
3I'm too chicken to ever do anything with my hair on my own, but I'm growing it out to donate it anyway, so I don't have to worry about that. The only thing I ever get done on a regular basis are my eyebrows, which costs me about $8/month, luckily. I do my own manicures and pedicures, so the only thing I really have to cut back on is spending cash on makeup. That is hard enough.
4I've colored at home (with some disasterous results in college) and trimmed my own bangs (again bad). I still pluck my eyebrows, do my own facials and hardly ever get pro mani/pedis. And I am back to coloring at home, but I go darker than my natural color now, which is much easier than going blonde.
5Junior year of high school, just a few short weeks before prom, I asked my mom to give me highlights. They ended up chunky, far from the root, and just terrible. I threw a monumental fit and had to pay for the salon to fix them. Highlights are just too hard to do on your own, or not have a professional do I think. But in a couple weeks when I get back to school I'm having my roommate dye my hair I think!
6I always cut my own bangs because stylists always cut them too short. I know the exact length I want them. I also trim my ends and dye my own hair. I think I do an excellent job--after a lot of practice of course!
7I have dyed my own hair w/single-process and given my brother 1-shade hilights (I think it was a Feria kit) and both turned out GREAT. However, the hilights I have are with multiple colors and I don't have the artistic skill to make that look right on myself or anyone else
8I "DIY" my own hair color since I was 16. My naturally ashy dark blonde just needs a bit of a warm up. I once tried to go "Little Mermaid" red and ended up with a very dark auburn that was not flattering. I went to several salons to get estimates on corrective color. They all said it would be at least $100. However, one stylist told me that if I used harsh shampoo, much of the color would fade out. It took a few weeks, but my hair did lighten to a more natural strawberry blonde. I used Feria "medium iridescent blonde" most recently with very nice copper/strawberry blonde results. However, I pay handsomely for a good haircut by a professional.
9Is that from the cartoon "Thundercats"? I used to watch that cartoon as a kid!!! I just had flashbacks. lol
10No, not really...I'm fairly low-maintenance anyway.
11Yes! I was bored one day and bought the Herbal Essences "Streaking Party" kit. I looked like a skunk... with brown fur and orange streaks.
It was $70 get it fixed
12I haven't had a wax in awhile, and I'm really regretting it.
13It's Cheetara.
14I do most of my own beauty treatments, including my own color, manicures, facials, and eyebrow shaping. I haven't had any real mishaps with those things, but I tried a "DIY" bikini wax kit once. I put a little of the wax on, but when I tried to pull it off, it hurt so bad that I ended up just trying to cut it out with a scissors. After that, I only had professionals doing my bikini waxing!
15One of my friends ravaged her hair in a drunken self haircut. I saved her fourty bucks by trimming and feathering it for her.
I would let one of my friends do my hair for me, but only if I knew they could be trusted with the scissors.
I once let a friend dye my hair black for me, I ended up with blond spots poking out of the black layers. Never again!
