Lots of ladies out there are scared of curling their eyelashes, but really, there's no reason to be afraid. So in this week's How To, I'll be explaining how to use an eyelash curler.
I'm not going to lie: Using a curling tool is a strange sensation, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Plus, I'm willing to endure some awkwardness for long, curled lashes. It's easy to achieve beautiful lashes with just an eyelash curler and mascara. For easy three step instructions on how to curl your lashes, read more
- Step 1: Start when your lashes are clean, dry, and mascara-free. Open the eyelash curler and, keeping your eyes open, place your upper lashes between the two sides.
- Step 2: Starting at the inner corner of your eye, position the curler as close as possible to your eyelid without pinching your skin. When your lashes are tucked inside, gently clamp the curler together.
- Step 3: Hold for ten seconds, then repeat as necessary, moving outward to curl the entire lash line.

Its def not as creepy as youd think. Its so worth the great lashes you get as a result.
1I always hear different times for how long you should hold the curler... As few as 5 secs to as long as 15! I guess 10 is a good compromise.
2It really doesn't work for me if I curl before mascara because the mascara seems to weigh down the curl...So I apply my mascara, let it dry then curl...However I hold the curling iron to my blow dryer on hot for a couple of seconds and then curl...It acts like a curling iron for your lashes and they stay curled all day!
3Sorry, I meant hold the eyelash curler to the blowdryer!
4I can't get my lashes on the outer ends of my eye (farthest from my nose) to curl! Tips?

6how long does the curl last?
7thanks so much for this Bella . I've always been afraid to use it, now definitely I'm gonna at least try
8If you use the blowdryer, just check that it's not too hot. Learned that one the hard way.
9I don't think the curl lasts long enough to justify it...maybe I'm doing something wrong. I bought a shu umera (sp?) one because I heard it's the best, and I still don't get very good results...
10Hi Everyone,
Great comments. To answer mtx, the curl is set with mascara. I would apply one coat for a natural look and two for a dramatic look. It will hold all day!
To answer isahrangme, try curling your lashes in at least two sections. Place the curler as close as you can (just make sure you don't get your skin caught) to the base of your lashes, squeeze the curler a little bit harder and hold a few seconds longer than usual. If you still aren't getting the results you want, if the curler is metal, hold it under the hairdryer for a few seconds. Your lashes are made of hair so they will respond to heat - just be careful not to burn your eyes!
11If your eyelash curls aren't holding all day, its possible that you're only getting mascara at the tips, and not down to the base, thus weighing down your curls. When you're applying the mascara, wiggle the brush gently from side to side. This helps to get the brush down to the base of your lashes. Also, I find that 1 coat works fine, and 2 kinda weights it down. Good luck!
12I never found it scary, but pinching the skin does hurt. :/
13I had to laugh when I read your post, smartypantssugar...I did the same thing once! Ouch!!
14I own one of these; very useful
15the best beauty tip i have ever received was to BLOW DRY your curler for about 30 seconds...make sure it's not too hot to burn your eyelids and then curl your eye lashes. it's seriously a wonder!
16i was like 29 before i discovered the wonder of eyelash curlers
17far too long i have found i don't even need mascara if i use one
I always feel like I get a weird crimp in my lashes, even if I hold for as little as a few seconds. Suggestions?
18ace... try doing more than one curl on your lashes. If you have several "crimps" you don't really notice it, it just looks like one big curl.
19Eyelash curlers never seem to do anything for me, I tried them twice over the years, and always ended up throwing them away. Now I am intrigued to try one again, but it sounds like I was doing everything right before...
20oh yay I didn't really know how long and how many times I had to hold for so thanks for the tip!
21Is the Shu eyelash curler really that much better than another brand? Please let me know. Thanks!
22^YES. it's totally worth it.
23i know you're supposed to replace yours every so often but i've had mine for 3 years (and i've replaced the pad continously) and it still works like new.
I use a combination of Shiseido eyelasher curler and my heated curler(s), those with two AAA batteries. There was a heated one sold in Wal-mart for less than $4 CND and it worked so well. I haven't replace my old heated curler. It still works like it's new and it have been used more than a year. It's a great investment, it's worth the money. Also I used the heating curler with bowdryer, I always somehow hurn myself, but not with a heated one (the battery ones)
24I definitely don't curl for 10 seconds! I kinda squeeze for a half second or so and then move up the lash line pretty quickly. In my experience (and being an Asian girl), I've found that no matter what I do, the curl never holds for long unless I use waterproof mascara! Heat/curling mascaras/holding the squeeze are no help. Any other Asian ladies feel the same?
25I am currently without ANY eyelash curler. I am going crazy, I need to buy a new one ASAP. It's weird having straight eyelashes, I look so much better with curled ones. I had to wear more eyeliner today because of it too. I love eyelashes curlers, heated ones too. Eyelashes are beautiful, & I'll never understand why some men have beautiful eyelashes that are long, thick and luscious, but I am stuck with skimpy ones : /
26I think the lashes would be even more set if everyone applies clear mascara after curling. Cute and natural.
27Isahrangme, I've heard that using a special curler really helps get those outer lashes (I have the exact same problem as you). I haven't tried this yet, but it's on my wishlist.....
Here is what I am considering buying:

Has anyone tried detail curlers? Do they work?
28I bought an eyelash curler a while ago and tried it, but really didn't see a difference. I'm gonna try it again. The one I have is Revlon and I got it at Walmart (maybe that's why I didn't see a difference?) Are there recommendations for the best curlers, or was I just not using the one I have correctly?
29i have super stubborn eye lashes, and i've gone through tons of eyelash curlers.. right now i'm using sonia kushak's [sp?] eyelash curler that sells at target, and the price isn't too bad. but what i've found out is that mascara definitely makes a difference. if i get one that is too heavy, my lashes won't curl at all. so yah, if you have stubborn lashes like mine, keep in mind the eye lash curler as well as the mascara you use.
30i have a new one, i'm not scared, but i can't keep my eyes open!
31Seems like we are bringing back the old Eyelash Curlers. Thanks Bella for writing this seems we all needed this How to..something taken for granted is usually something that we all were wondering about.
32That's helpful. However I'm still stuck because my eyelashes just don't curl! I try holding the curler for a really long time and going really slowly but it still doesn't work. Am I doing this wrong? My friend said that maybe my eyelashes just don't curl--is that natural??
33i can't live without my eyelash curler! it makes the eyes open up so much more, then added with mascara, ahhmazing. it's important to hold your blow dryer to the wax piece on the curler to make it actually curl your lashes.
34shu uemera makes a mini eyelash curler for those lashes that you can't get.. I don't know if it's available stateside, but it certainly is available in Asia.
