First came condom machines, tampon dispensers, and even perfume spritzers. But the latest bathroom vending trend is just plain weird: coin-operated hair straighteners and curling irons. (Thanks to Beauty and the Blog for the tip.) Strange, but true: A British company called Beautiful Vending has created a hair-straightening vending machine called Straight Up.
Found in nightclubs, bars, malls, and gyms, these wall-mounted machines offer GHD flat irons for customers who need a quick fix for misbehaving hair. According to the Beautiful Vending web site: "Your customer’s bad hair days are now a thing of the past, and they will thank you once our Beautiful Vending machine is installed."
Now, I can see how this might be a nice feature in a locker room or hotel — much like the ubiquitous hair dryers — but nightclubs? It's hard to imagine women taking dancing breaks to line up and straighten their hair. So please, tell me: Would you use a straightening iron during a night out?

Friggin hilarious and somewhat unhygienic at the same time.
So very strange and I would agree not very hygienic. People get the weirdest "big ideas".
i actually kind of like this idea. my hair needs to be calmed down every few hours with a flat iron. there could always be some sort of santizing spray or wipe before you use them...
I completely agree about the hygiene issues related with this but I honestly love the idea. My hair gets super crazy when I am out. I would love to be able to touch it up just like I touch up my make up. I always feel so embarassed half way through the night because my hair looks like it can't decide if it is curly or straight.
thats awesome!! i wish they had em at nightclubs here...my hair always gets crazy and im wishin i could fix it
It would get pretty gross unless it had a cleaning device. That said... I can't tell you how many times I've wished I had one when I was out- especially if it was raining!
I'd def. use that
i wish they had one at work
The hygiene thing is one I hadn't initially thought of but I can see where that would make me hesitant- but also I think it is a good idea because I can make my hair look great then by the time I actually get to where I am going out, it is flat or frizzy or a combo of both
I don't think the hygiene would actually be such an issue, if they had wipes. Or if the heat is high enough on the straightner. My hair gets super frizzy, so I would definitely use this if I were out for a night of dancing and wanted to stay looking fresh. We touch up our makeup and perfume, so why not our hair?
I wouldn't. Hygiene would be the #1 reason why I wouldn't use it. Night clubs are not known for their clean bathrooms. Do you really think that thing will be cleaned every day? No way!
Nope, that's gross. I don't share my hairbrush with friends, why would I share a straightening iron with hundreds of strangers?
i think i would want to use it...but wouldn't because its a little gross sharing with strangers.
I like the idea. I have naturally curly hair and I always straighten it when I go to a nightclub. After a few hours of dancing, it's not very straight anymore. It would be great to give it a little touch up.
I would prefer a curling iron! But yah, hadn't thought about the hygiene issue. So..um..icky!
Not hygenic at all !!!! someone put some sort of gel in their hair or something else that sticks to it then you come in and put it in your hair?!! ewwwwww...alot of ppl are there are nastttyyy, i wouldnt want to have to be cleaning it everytime i go into a club and the hairstyle flops and some nasty person before me used it and left it yucky..those are just some situations..one never knows....butttt what would be BETTER would be a portable hehe hairstraightener...probably small...can fit into a handbag or it can folded and battery used..special types or batteries or a specially made charger..so you and only you use it or your friend if you lend it to her and can stand anywhere in the bathroom and use it...that's sounds better hehe
It's a cool idea, but I just don't want that touching my hair. I've seen some pretty icky girls in the bathroom while I've been out.
Sorry, but this is a bad idea - people tend to be tipsy or worse at nightclubs. At best there's going to be burnt hair happening. At worst, burnt fingers and ears. Not to mention the hygiene issues that others have brought up.
people do weird things when drunk, I could just imagine what would happen. that and is it a really a big enough hair problem that you must re flat iron.
This idea does not seem sanitary! Beacuse of that I would not use it but I have a lot of friends obsessed with straightening their hair. I know this would be their ultimate heaven, being able to straighten their hair during a night out. I believe this vending machine would be a lot of use in the clubs... just not from me.
There have definitely been nights that I would have needed this at the bar....but it definitely isn't very sanitary...I doubt I'd actually use it myself.
i've actually used one, the have one in a snooker bar. yes a snooker bar. called the elbow room in the city i live (leeds, england)
one night i went out with some friends i hadn't seen in ages, and it rained, my hair frizzes at the slightest hint of moisture and my straight look had made me look like some eighties dancer. i was miserable for half the night constantly tugging at my hair to try and straighten it, then i went to the toilet, it was like finding the holy grail. it cost a british pound per 5 minutes, my hair takes me 25 minutes at home when its dry. I did it in the five minutes cause i rushed, i walked out of the toilets with so much more confidence. and enjoyed the rest of my night
p.s i wiped mine with wipe from a pack that was provided next to the machine, before and after use.
Well based on photojunkie's real live trial of the product, it appears that the hygine issue is resolved as long as they keep the wipes stocked! I probably wouldn't use it, my hair doesn't frizz up.
yes, yes, a wonderful idea!!!
love this idea!!! cant tell you how many times ive wished i could keep one in my purse...
as far as hygeine goes ladies.... VERY understandable, and i feel the same way, but at the same time, do you think your hairdressers clean theirs in between uses? .... i worked in an upscale salon when i was in high school and i don't think i ever remember them cleaning them....
I would love that, but I don't know how I feel about using a straightener every other sweaty girl with frizzy hair has used.
I would use it based on what photjunkie said, you just clean it before and after. I would be cleaning the whole thing each time.
thats amazing but thats not very sanitary...im kind of a germaphobe
That's an ingenious idea! There are definetly times I would have loved to have had this. But I agree w/ pollypo, people in clubs/bars are generally a bit on the drunk side, I don't know if it would be the best idea to use something hot when you've been drinking!
Wow! This is hilarious
i would use it in a nightclub. all that dancing makes people sweat which puts moisture in the air.
my hair + moisture = frizz
but then AGAIN, i'm a germaphobe.... so using a straightener that many other women w/ who knows WHAT in their hair... not cool
I love this idea! Just to be able to touch up a couple pieces by my face makes all the difference!
i agree with pollypo about drunk girls burning themselves... here's another scenario, what if there's a line of girls, especially in night clubs, and the damn thing is too hot to clean? i would rather stick to bringing a hair band or hair clip and putting my hair up... that way, it keeps me cool and still look fly than risking getting burned!
i love it, i would sure use it.... it's perfect when you have an emergency (a date for example....)
so good but yet the more i think about it so not a good idea at clubs.
I'd definitely use it!
Totally!! LOL that is a cool idea
Jup, I've always seen straighteners in bars and clubs here. Obviously you don't know what girls who go out look like here, I'd say that 90% of them use the straighteners in clubs. Which is an interesting contrast with my always frizzy/curly hair and probably uncool partying clothes!
NO WAY! Like everyone with the hygiene issue. What was this company thinking!?
if I wanted lice i'd go dip my head in a dirty licy pillow. I don't even straghten my hair at home, so no thanks.
Ewww..that is so gross!
I think it's a great idea! Like other members have noted, if a rainstorm takes you by surprise you can end up with frizzy hair. I, too, have wished for a hair straightener to magically appear in these situations. I don't think the hygiene issue is as dramatic as some may think. Straighteners and curling irons get really really hot, and I think that would kill any bacteria, lice, etc. I bet they'll be marketed to hotels and gyms next.
hmm sounds a little unhygenic to me.
also, in my drunken state i'd probably end up just burning myself... or others.
I would love this!! My hair is always poker-straight leaving the house but after a few drinks, and a boogie, I end up with a ball of frizz.
Sounds great to me!!!
In a hotel bathroom maybe ... if I'm at a really fancy party that I need to touch up. Probably not in a club/bar setting where they might be a longer line for it than to use the toilet [to be honest].
The first time I saw this was last summer in Ibiza. It struck me as quite strange.
Wow thats cool ,So very strange and I would agree not very hygienic. People get the weirdest "big ideas". thats fantastic keep it up..
